About The Scallop Shell

The Scallop Shell fish & chip restaurant & seafood grill.

The Scallop Shell Description

The Scallop Shell is an award winning fish and chip restaurant and seafood grill restaurant in Bath. We serve up traditional favourites like lightly battered, flaky cod and haddock and seasonal delights from the early morning coastal markets. Our chips are peeled and freshly cut from the best seasonal spuds and prepared daily for you in our beautiful spud room.

The Scallop Shell is driven by a passion for seafood from Garry Rosser, who returned to the city where his career as a chef began when he opened the Scallop Shell in 2015. Now occupying two floors and a beautiful terrace, The Scallop Shell is open for lunch and dinner.

We visited last night, were offered a lovely table in the terrace. The starters were divine and perfectly cooked. We had a small issue with the main course and all the staff went over and above to resolve it. We would fully recommend. Thank for again for a lovely evening.

User

The food was very good. Great Scallops, mussels and the Dover Sole and fried Hale were delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked not greasy.

User

The best seafood restaurant in Bath

User

Really enjoyed everything about our visit to The Scallop Shell. The great choice of fresh fish and seafood available and the excellent way it was prepared and presented. We ate mussels, clams, langoustine and lobster and all were delicious. The staff were great and very helpful and polite. We will definitely return. In fact I can't wait! My only regret is that I'm only visiting the city and can't eat there on a regular basis.

User

Never disappoints. Exceptional traditional f&cs, mushy peas and so much more. The Midford Cider brewed just down the road is a great match. Try the Specials as they will be because of the freshness. Thanks to Saturday's staff this week they were so lovely. Good partnership with the pub next door when a table isn't free but they tell us they now take bookings which is great news when our family and friends come to stay as they all love it too. Big thanks and pleae keep up the good work Gary and the amazing team we LOVE you

User

Lovely place, nice thoughtful menu, beautifully cooked and delicious meals. Chickpea fritters with chilli jam were superb! Highly recommended!

User

Had the pleasure to visit with friends for a quick lunch, as we’d been highly recommended. The interior is really well done, the stripped back to industrial mixed with fishing/sea side decor works really well. We had cod & chips with bread & butter, so had to make the obligatory chip butty, and I got to try a few muscles which were plump and juicy, the cod was super fresh and tasty. We hope to come again one day. Having had the chance to meet Garry, we wish you all the very best with your top Fish & Chip shop for the future

User

Had the best fish & chips here that I have ever tasted, lovely rustic, warm & friendly place, fabulous service and the fish was beautifully fresh, proper fluffy inside crispy outside chips and amazing homemade mushy peas, definitely a must if your in the area.

User

Great decor, fab food and top service. Certainly not recommending it (I want to be able to get a table!)

User

From entering the front door, we knew we had found a gem of a place, it was buzzing, the Staff were so friendly and efficient, we knew the food would be just as good, we started with giant prawns, followed by Brill and chips, bread and butter and a lovely light bottle of white wine, so delicious all cooked to perfection and watched them take out the fresh fish from the large bath on display, all the fish was from the West Country too, what a way to spend our 50th Wedding Anniversary Dinner, Mary and David G

User

Fantastic fish & chips in a delightful restaurant. Polite and helpful staff and fairly priced menu. Toilet facilities are first class. Will certainly go again and would advise anyone who love Britain's finest meal to give it a try.

User

Excelllent food, great staff

User

As soon as we entered the staff was lovely and accomodating. Sat on the terrace outside and were fussed over if we needed heaters on which was nice. Food was amazing especially the scallops. Highly recommended. Thanks for lovely service and to Louise who recommended it. (From Bay Tree House. An amazing lady who looked after us as well)

User

Absolutely delicious seafood. 10 out of 10 , super service and great atmosphere 5 star . 👍👍👍

User

Absolutely brilliant. Starters were exceptional. Mussels oysters and crispy herring roe. Inventive and well executed. Main courses were variations on a theme but it was a great theme. Lovely chips, battered gurnard and rock salmon and super tasty skate wings. Completed with lovely curry sauce and tasty mushy peas. A lovely meal in a lovely space. A must do if in Bath.

User

A great place ... wonderful selection of seafood to order. Or old school fish and chips mushy peas bread and butter and a mug of teas for a tenner can’t be bad

User

I am not used to paying so much for Fish and chips , being a newbie Working in Bath, however one of the best fish and chips i have tasted in a long time and as a one off treat was great

User

Had my first visit there, with a friend, Saturday evening. Fairly full, good atmosphere. Good menu with sufficient choice. Good food served by busy, friendly staff, and not badly priced. Personable manageress.

We were given table 9, which I was suprised at, as this table was near the ordering till (that's right, you have to queue up to order) and also by the pass where the servers collected their food from, some waiters were carrying 3 plates! Other tables were vacant, but we assumed that these must be booked.

What should have been an enjoyable relaxing meal was somewhat spoillt by queuing customers standing over me and servers squeezing past.

When I used the upstairs washroom there was some nice restaurant seating, at bar seating, and also some terracing, making the downstairs area look like a cafe in comparison!

If you do decide to go, book a table on the terrace if it's nice, or upstairs. Try not to be given a table downstairs, and don't accept table 9, they should get rid of it!

My family and our extended family have been eating at The Scallop Shell pretty much since it’s opening as we love it so much.

The staff were always friendly and attentive and the fresh fish and chips and all the other starters we have were always cooked to perfection and that still remains.

The main thing that has changed for us over the last 12 months is the standard of front of house staff. We’ve noticed that there is high staff turnover.

On our latest meal, it was so so disappointing. The waiting staff had a terrible attitude.

The girl that brought us the food literally shouted ‘Hake’ for my partners dish ‘Cod’ for my dish and ‘Goujons’ for my son’s with no other words in between!

The mussels we ordered were not as expected and when we asked to change them the male waiter asked what I meant by change them?

I was shocked.

I’ve enjoyed many a meal but this one and a couple of previous visits have made us feel the need to take our custom elsewhere if the front of house staff cannot help their customers enjoy their meal.

Please Scallop Shell management look into this, we love your fresh fish and seafood and would love to remain a loyal customer. Regards
