By 1821 the old Shambles, which had been built in the centre of the High Street, was said to be a disgrace to the town. When the workmen started to pull the old Shambles down on the 12th May 1825 some members of the Volunteer Band assembled by the side of it and, for a joke, played The Downfall of Paris. This highly amused the townsfolk as the building was a decrepit old place. Once the site had been cleared everyone was so delighted with the appearance of the High Street tha...t they were against another building being put in its place. A petition was sent to the Mayor asking him to call a meeting to consider "Whether the necessity for erecting a permanent Shambles cannot be obviated by substituting moveable ones, or by some other means". A meeting was held on the 14th May at which a resolution was passed in favour of a moveable Shambles and a committee appointed to confer with the Corporation on the subject. At the conference meeting the Mayor, on behalf of the Corporation, demanded the extravagant sum of £3,000 as a condition for giving up the permanent Shambles, thus putting a close to the conference. Another requisition was presented to the Mayor a few days later, signed by 88 burgesses of the town, requesting him to call a meeting of the Corporation for the purpose of rescinding the former resolutions for building a permanent Shambles and a Corn Exchange, but this he declined to do. When the townspeople found out that the building was to be extended eight or nine yards further south, with the aid of the workmen they pulled down the brickwork and levelled the foundations, not once but twice. Thirteen people were arrested but the case was dismissed as everyone was in sympathy with them. Work continued on the new Shambles and on the 28th September 1825 it was opened for public use. The cost of the building was £1,960 and the materials of the old building were sold for £86 15s. 2d. Above the entrance it says, Erected 1825 AD John Wilkinson Esq. Mayor.
The poet laureate of Stockton at the time, Thomas Webber wrote a poem about these events.
The Shambles, as some people say Demand my chief attention Since they have been on many a day A subject of contention And sure it was humorous to see The war when hottest reigning And hear when in emergency Some gallant chief complaining.
To see the architect sublime And him with many others With bricks and mortar, spades and lime Like true Masonic brothers Prepare the Shambles to erect And hear the opposition Swear they would send the architect And crew into perdition And if, lest angry critics lash The truth must be indited The walls fell with a dreadful crash And numbers were delighted.
~The first of these various image of the Shambles is a sketch showing how the Shambles were originally envisioned with an upper floor that was never built.
