So I am stuck in the office at home staring out the window at the rain, and the pub send me through this picture (not Insta perfect but who cares)........proper pie, mash & liquor.
It makes me feel equally angry, (that I am here & not there), and happy that I will get to try it soon.
Proper pie, mash & liquor. On the pub classics menu now. Come & get your nostalgia fix (although we can't promise walking on eel bones on the way through the door, or the overpowering smell of vinegar). Just delicious grub

Went last night for dinner with friends. I e mailed earlier to ask about a vegan menu . They got back to me and I was informed not a problem. Staff were very helpful and professional. The others had the hot smoked salmon and the steak and kidney pudding , both were wonderful. It’s a great pub with a great standard of restaurant and service.

Thank you for our evening, we will be back soon .

User

Very good food, had starter & main, fish was cooked perfectly. Service was excellent with very friendly staff. The only negative would be the price of the specials starter (scallops) £11 a little over priced. Would definitely return and recommend to family & friends.

User

Third time eating here over the last week and can’t wait till next time. My new favourite place. Great atmosphere, great food and great service. Everything is fresh and homemade. Had the roast beef today which was really tasty, loads of fresh veg too. Cannot praise this place enough. Lovely peaceful village location, ample parking and a warm welcome.

User

Service was very good, prompt and friendly, without being overbearing. Menu was good, with a nice variety but not confusing with too much on offer. And the food was excellent. I had a Sirloin cooked to perfection from the specials board while my wife, who is very specific about her food, really enjoyed her Seabass. Definitely on the repeat visit list.

User

Moved to Colchester last year and did a quick google search today for somewhere to go for lunch.

We weren’t disappointed. The ambience was lovely, dinning room bright and clean. The food was tasty and service great.

It is on the pricey side but what the hell - it’s payday!

User

Highly recommend this pub the food and service is outstanding the menu is up market the staff are extremely welcoming and friendly nothing is too much, this pub is truly an asset to the Colchester area. Well done Tom Mandy and the team your doing a brilliant job and look forward to many more Dinner dates you deserve it guys.

Having frequented The Shepherd since moving to Colchester 14 years ago we had not made it down there since the new management had been in place. We visited yesterday for Sunday lunch and it was a real treat. The food was excellent as was the service. There was a wealth of fresh vegetables and staff were attentive. The only suggestion I would have is being the mother of two fussy eaters I would have liked to see a full children's menu available and also a child's portion of any of the Sunday lunches on offer. This is only a minor point as I am not blaming my kids' terrible fussiness on anyone! Lovely time was had, we will be back.

User

Have been on a number of occasions to The Shepherd, but more so, of the last couple of times that we have been, we have been thoroughly well looked after, with outstanding service, food and atmosphere. Both Esther & Rich are fantastic hosts and generous to a fault. Highly recommend. Not to be missed of experiencing.

User

Had a lovely lunch here yesterday and the food was absolutely delicious,I would highly recommend it. The staff were all very friendly too. Loved the decor. Will definitely be back.

User

Decor is cool contemporary but still welcoming, service is friendly and efficient. Food is superb. A very very minor point of not enough sauce was soon rectified by way of an extra jug of said sauce.

Nice range of ales, lovely wine list

Nothing to dislike, alot to love.

User

Called in today for lunch, we were made very welcome including our dog. The food was amazing so tasty. Will certainly return.

User

After a dismal experience at another establishment for lunch, my wife and I decided to treat ourselves to dinner out at our local pub. We were greeted with a warm welcome from the charming and friendly staff. The service was great and the food was spectacular. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone that asks for somewhere good to eat in and around Colchester.

User

Absolutely delicious, excellent service and catered so well for kids. Lovely

User

We had a family get together last Sunday 16 people in all and we could not fault the service we received. We were made very welcome and was constantly looked after especially by Tom who went to great lengths to make sure our afternoon went well. Food was excellent, service was excellent and I would definitely recommend this place. Well done.

User

Had a great meal at a lunchtime during the week, so the pub was quiet but not empty. The staff were very attentive, the atmosphere was just right and the food and service were first class. We will definitely return. Thank you The Shepherd.

User

Fantastic food and surroundings, been coming here for years but the atmosphere is better than it’s been in a long while .

The food is amazing , can be seated in or out , I prefer out in the summer ......... you will not be disappointed

User

I wad dissapointed to be honest, my expectations were high. When we arrived we were sat in the bar area instead of being seated at our table, then once we were seated it took another 5 minutes before they realised we didn't have menus. We were sat totally out of the way with no atmosphere, not even any music playing in the background. I ordered the aubergine moussaka which I thought was going to be a traditional moussaka but when it arrived it was basically a plate of lentils with 2 slices of aubergine, some lettuce leaves and one small slice of tough garlic bread. I came home hungry for 11.95! The owners seem very nice so a shame it wasn't more special. Sorry i don't think I'll be back

User

Very disappointing. Party of 7 of us; two of us had steak which was overcooked after ordering medium rare. Waited ages for correct steaks (third time lucky) by which time rest of party had eaten theirs. Ordered the Espresso Brûlée off the menu for dessert which came out as lemon! No gesture of discounted bill even when discussed with disgruntled barman who said 'well the steaks have to be paid for!' And no apologies for incorrect dessert. Eventually reluctantly gave us £20 back. Lived in Langham for 27 yrs from birth and this was a family reunion. Disappointing.

User

Felt like the staff knew the food they were serving was awful, didn't ask once how the food was. Then took 20 minutes to take my money, had to go up to her at the bar in the end to pay the bill where she was talking to the bar staff.
