Went and had a lovely sunday roast this week. It's a bit snowy outside but I was lovely and warm, sat for a while with some friends and had a lovely pint of Aspalls, a good traditional roast dinner and some gorgeous cheesecake for dessert. Friendly atmosphere, pretty pub. Definitely worth a revisit!!

User

Second visit and just as good as the first, helpful and polite staff, excellent value lunch, 2 courses for £7.95

Although I neither eat out or even intend to,i feel that my life has become so mundane that I now find myself qualified to have an imput that us based in pure lies. The staff were excellent and could not have put themselves out anymore to make sure my stay was enjoyable.my starter was beautifully served, pipeing hot and an incredible explosion of tastes on the pallet served along with a non existant bottle of the finest French wine .i left after this knowing that even thou I am lieing I still overstretched my budget .i would recomend this dinery to anyone who, has,a sense if humour and likes telling lies .l

Nice sunday dinner but would have been better if veg n Yorkshire pub were homemade

User

Liked the atmosphere... the staff were welcoming and friendly and the selection of food on the menu was good and value for money .... thoroughly enjoyed our meal ... we'll be back !!!

User

Went there last night for a pub meal. It was packed out with people so we weren't hopeful of getting a table. Anyway, we did manage to get a table & ordered our food. It arrived promptly & looked good. However, the chips were a bit soggy & tasteless. Definitely a cheap frozen brand that were just warmed up in the oven. I asked for some mayonnaise & was given a Heinz squeezy bottle that was empty! The scampi & peas were perfect though. Lovely pub atmosphere just a shame about the food.

User

Visited last night. Very poor choice of real ales for hubby. I took advantage of bottle of Prosecco for £10. Meals awful, starters mushrooms in parsley batter were rock hard, stated on menu comes with side salad, but had to ask for the salad as wasn't on plate. I had Lasagne, worst Lasagne ever had, tiny portion, swimming in grease & crozzlef round edges. Just runny mince (no hint of red wine in taste), 2 thin layers of pasta on top. Hubby opted for fish & chips, hardly any fish, just massive piece of greasy batter, mushy peas, tiny portion& very dry. Waited ages for waiter to come near so we could complain but no sign of him, so walked out. Definitely won't be eating there again, much better meals in Wetherspoons!!

SORT THE HEATING OUT

The food is always great value but the lack of heating is really letting The Sportsman down. I realise that today is particularly cold but we have braved it for many weeks. Sitting in our coats to eat dinner wasn’t a pleasant experience. We would have stayed longer and spent more but it was a ridiculously cold experience so returned home fast. One of the fires hasn’t worked for months and the central heating is none existent. Make it a warmer cosier place and people will stay to enjoy the lovely atmosphere and people.

User

Come in regularly and normally have a positive experience, however I came in for an evening drink and one of the members of staff was very unprofessional to what can only be described as lolling on some other customers speaking very loudly about being hungover and can’t wait for her shift to end. When I’m in a pub, I don’t expect to hear that complaining from the staff. This put a really negative spin on my experience when I normally have an enjoyable experience.
