The Spyglass Inn Description

The Spyglass is one of the iconic buildings of Ventnor and has a reputation that is founded on good grub, great beer and a fantastic atmosphere. This is enhanced by the live music which is presented free of charge most evenings as well as lunchtime on Sundays and features many of the Isle of Wight's top local musicians. You might imagine, being so close to the water's edge, seafood is a specialty at the Spyglass with fresh crab and lobster delivered straight to door from the Ventnor Haven fishery. The Spyglass Admiral's Platter is the stuff of legend!

As you approach the Spyglass Inn, with its superb terrace, you can’t help but be impressed by its wonderful location. For centuries Ventnor Bay has been the haunt of smugglers with contraband being carried over from the French coast only a few hours sail away. The spirit of those days are captured on the walls of the pub, which are loaded with fascinating maritime pictures and artifacts and create a unique and memorable experience.

And of course it was The Spyglass that pioneered its own distinct admissions policy: 'Muddy boots & well behaved dogs welcome', that is now (thankfully) echoed by other proper pubs up and down the country.

We always go to this pub when we come to the island as it's such a great location and the food is fantastic.

We came over for 1 night and decided to stay there this time, what a VERY wise idea that was, great little flat in the perfect location, we WILL be staying again soon.

User

The food was amazing. Decent portions and the Seafood Curry is worth a shout.

Most Gorgeous Garlicky&ButteryLobster!

Most succulently moist shrimps! The crispy chunky calamari was to die for!

Matched by just the perfect jug of PIMM’S on that sunny morning!

It’s like stealing a moment having a secret feast of seafood heaven inside a once-upon-a-time smuggler’s get-away!

Letting you all guys in a secret here!

User

Lovely old pub. Amazing food (although have to say the lobster seems to get smaller each time i go in there!). Still bloody lovely tho. Great atmosphere. Great location right on the sea.

User

It was extremely busy when we arrived however the queues moved quickly and the staff were efficient and friendly. The menu offered a good selection of reasonably priced options. Our meals were served promptly (Sirloin steak and tuna steak), were well presented and prepared, overall couldn’t fault anything and would highly recommend.

User

Great pub, right on the seafront with great selection of drinks and a menu for everyone. Staff are happy to serve, food is quick and there's live music most days. Love it!

User

Great location situated above Ventnor Beach on the Isle of White. Food was okay was for lunch. The beer prices and variety of beer pretty good.

User

Food looked great although we'd eaten already so just had a dessert to share! Music every night, a bit of life in an otherwise pretty lifeless town after 6pm.

User

Nice place to eat. Great location. Food is filling , pretty standard nothing special just decent pub food.

Unfortunately the last time we ate there we had hair in 4 of our dishes , all separate courses , which put us off .

User

My partner and I went there for some food yesterday, lady clearing the tables was very bolshy and offish!!! Needs customer service training, and my pint of Starboard appeared flat and no head so returned it to the bar and the bartender said we have had no complaints, what’s wrong with it??? Instead of saying sorry sir will change it! Food was good Though and came out quickly.

User

Been coming here for years for location and seafood. However to spend £85 on food and be penalised by asking to pay an additional surcharge when your partner is Gluten free for medical reasons isn’t very PC in this day and age, particularly when the dish was advertised as G/F.

Think it’s time to start choosing an alternative seafront seafood restaurant, what a shame! Caring about your customers should be at the forefront of the hospitality business, feel quite disappointed in the attitude!
