AUDITION NOTES for THE AUDIENCE by PETER MORGAN
For sixty years Queen Elizabeth has met her prime ministers in private for a weekly audience at Buck House. Peter Morgan’s play which makes us privy to these confidential meetings is a work of informed imagination based on history, gossip and speculation. Major figures in our political life discuss game changing historical events with unexpected humanity, candour and even comedy
We are not looking for physical look alikes. The ...set is sketchy, we are not going to recreate the palace. Our resources will be spent on immaculate costumes, wigs and where necessary make-up. We will be recreating these ministers with bold strokes, not to be satirical but because what may seem an ‘exaggeration’ of truth will be instantly recognisable and enjoyable for our audiences. Frances Viner (director), Andrew Bruce (producer), Maureen Nelson (costumes), Rose Balp (properties), May Fairweather (stage manager) are all highly skilled and supportive. Whatever your level of experience we guarantee a sharpening of skills, a lot of fun and confidence in what you are doing.
Wikipedia will give you more personal and historical detail but think in terms of those characteristics you immediately recall. Political life and that of the royal family are performances. We will preserve the drama and remove the masks.
The cast is as follows Queen Elizabeth - ages from young womanhood to late eighties. DO NOT LET YOUR AGE DETER YOU. We are casting two queens one to play Elizabeth in her twenties and thirties and the other to take us into her revered maturity Child Elizabeth - playing age 11. Winston Churchill - as he was in 1952 after George VI’s death and before Elizabeth’s coronation, decrepitude has not diminished his enormous presence Anthony Eden - 1956 during the Suez crisis he is dashing, aristocratic and near to breaking point Harold Wilson - it’s 1964 Labour have narrowly won the election, Wilson is in his late 40s, plays the ‘ill-bred ruffian’ but is a fine intellect Margaret Thatcher - nuff said John Roy Major - 52, a quiet worried man with 3 O - levels, unassuming and that rare thing in politics, decent Tony Blair - a small part but a memorable one Gordon Brown - 58, a dour Scottish academic, anxious David Cameron - 2015 Cameron is 48, the last audience before exiting to his shed Equerry - 40 plus, ex-Lieutenant Commander of the Royal Navy Bobo Macdonald - Scottish nanny, servant, confidante and dresser to Elizabeth detectives, policemen and an archbishop will be doubled with prime ministers Auditions *** Stables Theatre October 28th 2018 at 3.00 pm First read thro’ Thursday 15th November 7.00 pm Stables Theatre First rehearsal Sunday 2nd December 2.00 - 5.00 pm 2018 THE AUDIENCE opens March 8th 2019 ***we would love it if you brought a prop with you to illustrate some aspect of your character

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Stables Theatre opens June 1st Adapted by Simon Read. Based on the novel by Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice is the most famous love story our country has ever produced. In Georgian England, men had property whilst women had smelling salts and piano lessons. At that time women had no legal status. Just as children, they were the property of fathers until marriage when that ownership passed to their husbands. Women could not own or rent property, they co...uld not vote or have a bank account.
With this backdrop, the Bennet daughter’s prospects are not rosy. Without financial independence they have few if any choices. Women sold themselves for a roof over their heads. How could such an arrangement have a happy outcome and yet Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice as a romantic comedy.
The histrionic attempts at match-making by Mrs Bennet and her daughters are undeniably funny but why is it that this back drop of repression still holds our interest today? Is it because Elizabeth Bennet’s and Mr Darcy’s passion is reliant on the restrictions of Regency culture, their passion created by its repression? Or is it that love flourishes no matter how awful the situation in which people find themselves and we do so cherish a love story against all the odds!
Simon Reade’s adaptation for the stage looks with affection at the wit and romance of Jane Austen’s most famous literary romance. An ingenious set and a large cast led by Imogen Willetts, James Slacke, will bring you into the enchanting and very funny world of Jane Austen.

Wot a fantastic play, twas performed brilliantly, completely recommended viewing Wit, drama and emotion from the 2 fantastic leading men throughout accompanied by good characters portrayed by the rest of the cast. I also loved the great use of sound effects to transport you back in time into a theatre being surrounded by bombings but the show must go on and so indeed should this, top class

Wonderful atmosphere in a small but intimate stetting. Amateur performances with feeling.

Becoming a member for £15 a year gives money off the already reasonable tickets prices giving excellent value to for money.

User

We went to see The Three Kings on the final night -and all I can say is what a brilliant cast! Congratulations to all you fabulous and true actors who all told the story in a completely absorbing way- what a journey!

User

The stables is great You get a fantastic upfront and intimate experience. Very professional and thoroughly enjoyable It's unbeatable value for money. Love the art gallery too!

User

The Stables production of `Let The Right One In` was an excellent choice to put on the stage. Biting and cutting the necks of victims in the blood thirsty scenes were excellent, and gave a prickly sensation to the audience. As usual no prompts were needed, and the play flowed along just like the Vampire wanted. Colin and Lynda

Dearest Luvvies,

What an absolute thrill to have spent the most enjoyable afternoon at The Stables Theatre and Art Centre, watching Richard Bean's 'One Man, Two Guvnors'.

From start to finish, the slick cast kept the sold out performance bristling along, with gags, slapstick and asides that constantly engaged the audience in this masterclass of farce. Even the audience participation kept everyone on their toes, with ad libs by the dozen.

Based on the 18th century Commedia dell'Arte original, A Servant Of Two Masters, by Goldoni, (the role of Trufaldino I was familiar with from a high school production in my teens) this sixties inspired version invokes memories of Cooney and Carry On. The inspired set is the extra cast member that should not be overlooked. (Frank Jenks and the production team)

The fabulous ensemble cast, gelled seamlessly with one another and were humerous and entertaining in equal amounts. Where to begin...

Philip Blurton as Charlie Clench

The one liners and head-butting delivered with equal aplomb. A real Guvnor.

Sophie Allender as Pauline Clench

Bright and refreshing talent.

Bill Allender as Harry Dangle

A Latin dictionary and 'Brief' to Charlie, Bill was solid and professional.

Carey Poole as Alan Dangle

The epitome of the 'Luvvie', Carey shone as the love lorn actor!

Zola Thomas as Dolly

The amorous, Northern vixen played with full sass!

Neil Mitchell as Lloyd Boateng

His constant reference to Parkhurst Prison evoking laughter.

Kitson Wellard as Francis Henshall

Such a perfect fit for this role, his comedy timing and slapstick was a joy to behold.

Claire Bolt as Rachel Crabbe

Tough double role expertly delivered with humour and pathos (btw I met your parents and compared Joe Brown shirts!)

Nick Griffith as Stanley Stubbers

His clipped upper class tones and naked image will be hard to un-see!

Rob Dyer as Alfie

Rob's scene stealing geriatric waiter was inspired and had the audience roaring.

All the ensemble were a credit too.

Thank you Chris Lacey and team.
