Whilst this festive period has been very different from previous years for us, we’ve pushed on thought December; seen lots of familiar faces and many new ones too, if you were new to us (or we were new to you...) then we look forward to seeing you all again in 2019 - there will be a reopening date for our kitchen announced very soon.
We’ve been unbelievably well supported by our friends, guests and industry peers for which we can’t thank you enough. The bar is open till late ...tonight with a short break whilst we see in 2019, we’re also open tomorrow (New Years Day) 11:00-15:00 for drinks only with a slightly limited service but please do come and see us for a coffee or something stronger! From 2nd -7th January the Yorkshire Teapee will be in full swing with our bbq alongside this every day from 11:00 till late. Happy New Year!!!! x

Many guests have asked us where this amazing tree came from... The team at York Christmas Trees supplied and delivered this tree and even if you haven't seen it in person, it's a truly beautiful tree!
Picture by the amazingly talented Paul @ Bailey Cooper Photography
... Don't forget we're open every day from 11:00 for your favourite festive tipple, we've got mulled wine, mulled cider, Taylors of Harrogate coffee and Yorkshire Tea in the #YorkshireTeapee.
Craft ales from Brew York, Timothy Taylor's on cask, one of 4 sites in the North showcasing the amazing Pilsner Urquell Tank Beer.
Not forgetting fabulous gins from Yorkshire and further afield, most popular this week have been York Gin's London Dry and the unstoppable Slingsby's Rhubarb.
All our usual cocktails and some festive ones available too with wines, fizz and festive cheer by the bucket load!
Vouchers are available to purchase over the phone although we think the Royal Mail 1st Class Recorded Delivery won't be particularly useful towards the end of the week if you'd like to be able to gift your vouchers! You can always pop in and collect them from our lovely reception team here at the restaurant and don't forget theres 10% off (for £50 and above) and extended validity too.
See you at the bar!

In the absence of our kitchen we have fashioned a Christmas themed BBQ, available from today! Come down and enjoy the festive season with us!

We are spreading goodwill and cheer to all throughout this festive period!
Any likes and shares of this post would be much appreciated!!!
Being Yorkshire folk, we won’t let situations beyond our control get us down. With true Northern grit we are pushing on and proceeding as planned.
... Since the fire which occurred in the roof above our kitchen on 09/11/18 we have been unable to cater for many pre-booked Christmas parties, although many guests have still said they’ll come and visit us for a drink before heading off to their newly planned dinner destinations and to dance the night away in the various hostelries our beautiful city has to offer.
We have had a construction team on site almost every day since and we are doing our very best to put plans in place to re-open as soon as we possibly can - we envisage this will be in February 2019 so here’s the thing…..
Our gift vouchers make a fabulous Christmas gift for that person who is difficult to choose for (and of course those who aren’t!)
We have special offer for you this December with our vouchers which are available in various denominations: £10, £20, £50 and £100.
For any voucher of £50 or over, in any denomination we will be offering 10% discount on the purchase price of these vouchers.
For our £100 vouchers (either in straight £100 format of any combination) we will also offer the 10% off and we’ll cover the cost of the 1st class recorded delivery too!
As a result of the fire any vouchers due to expire in this period have been extended by an additional 6 months taking their validity to 18 months from date of purchase, this will also be extended anyone purchasing vouchers in December.
To take advantage of this offer, vouchers can be purchased over the phone and either posted directly to the recipient or to your address so that you can gift them directly as our vouchers are in a traditional printed format.
If you would like to do this then please call us on 01904619208 any day from 11am onwards and we can arrange this for you.
You can also come into the restaurant to purchase vouchers from our front desk and maybe have a mulled wine in our Yorkshire Teapee which we have created in partnership with Yorkshire Tea, Taylors of Harrogate and PapaKåta!, we’re open every day from 11:00 till late!
Thank you to guests old and new for your continued support during this time and we look forward to welcoming you in the new year for a meal, or of course in the latter part of 2018 for a festive beverage!
Please note that our vouchers are not transferable between our venues, however you can purchase vouchers directly from all of our sites:
The Star Inn At Harome - 01439 770397
Mr P's Curious Tavern - 01904 521177
Star Inn The Harbour - 01947 821900

In very much more positive news, here are our prototype new table numbers from our incredibly talented friends at Purepallets. (Although these are for summer 2019 on our terrace it’s really put a smile on our faces today.) The Purepallets team have one of the little chalets just outside The Judge's Lodging on Lendal so pay them a visit for some cracking Christmas pressie ideas! 🎄 ❤️

We have worked terribly hard to get back up and running for drinks after a devastating fire in the roof void above our kitchen just over 2 weeks ago. Overnight our beautiful Teapee has been broken into and reckless damage caused to equipment and furnishings... we’d love to meet these people! Needless to say we aren’t feeling particularly festive right now although we promise we’ll get our act together in time for opening at 12 noon ❤

User

First of all, let’s start by thanking each and every one of you for your continuing support and kindness towards us during what has been the greatest time of adversity we’ve ever faced since we opened five years ago. We have been thrilled and humbled by the goodwill shown towards us, proof that we are lucky enough to have the best customers, suppliers and friends we could ever have wished for!
Now then, a few of you will have noticed that the lights are back on and somebody’s... home. You may also have noticed the gargantuan tent which has appeared overnight on our outside Terrace. As you know already, we’ve completely lost our kitchen to a devastating fire and won’t be able to serve food until early next year, but we didn’t want anyone to think that would be the end of us. We’re fighting back and we’re determined to give the good people of York (and further afield) somewhere magical to visit this Christmas, so we’re back open as a bar!
Here are a few photos to tempt you into our winter wonderland, where Santa won’t be giving out presents, but he might make you a delicious ‘Turbo Tea’ with Slingsby Rhubarb Gin. In pride of place is the spectacular Yorkshire ‘Teapee’, where we’re collaborating with Taylor’s of Harrogate & Yorkshire Tea to bring you the ultimate festive drinking experience. Fire pit, fairy lights, comfy seats & river views - we’ve got ‘em all.
You’re also as welcome as ever to relax in our cosy bar and River Room, and since we aren’t able to serve up any proper grub, please feel free to help yourself to a table for drinks in our conservatory, the Garden Room - where you can also drink in the stunning views of the River Ouse and Museum Gardens.
Our opening times will be:
Monday - Thursday: 12 noon ‘til late Friday - Sunday: 11am ‘til late

We’ll be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day but open for your enjoyment every other day!
We won’t be taking any bookings, but we’ve got loads of space for everyone to sit and enjoy themselves, so come along! Christmas shopping? Take a break with a glass of fizz. Out for a works ‘do? Fortify yourself first with a craft cocktail. Out for a drink on a Tuesday because it’s December and why not? We’ve got just the beverage for you.
To reiterate, we cannot thank you all enough for being so kind to us during this hugely difficult time. It already feels great to have the building back and looking so Christmassy, so all we need now is for you to come and enjoy it with us!
With love, The Star Inn The City Team ⭐️

**UPDATED THURSDAY 29/11/18**
The winner of the like and share competition below is Darren Abbott - please contact us with your details and we'll get in contact with you when we have more information about our re-opening date and you'll be joining us with a guest to celebrate!
Thank you all for your support in what is a difficult time for us here, we've been overwhelmed by the amount of positive vibes we've received.
... If you did have a restaurant reservation with us throughout the festive period and have had to make alternative arrangements, thank you for your patience but please do come and visit us for a drink if you're in town.
We would love to welcome you.
Well done Darren! x
Since the fire which occurred in the early hours of Friday 09/11/18, our senior management team have been working tirelessly with contractors to get a date which moving forward we can tell people we’ll reopen on.
The efforts of North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service have saved our building although the fire has completely demolished the kitchen roof-space including all the wooden joists and the roof itself. We have now been informed the kitchen itself is condemned due to fire and water damage. Given the severity of this work required to get us up and running again we will not be able to get back in the kitchen until early 2019 which is absolutely devastating for us. The silver lining in all this is that nobody was injured in the fire, we are gutted about the damage done to our beloved building but confident we can resume normal service in a fairly timely manner (albeit in 2019). This time last week we began the arduous task of calling all the large bookings up until Christmas, all our guests have been so lovely and understanding, if we haven’t called you yet then please bear with us. Rest assured we have looked into temporary kitchens plus many other eventualities and it’s just not possible.
Many of our guests have transferred bookings to Mr P's Curious Tavern just round the corner which is part of our wider family of restaurants - The team there can be contacted on 01904 521177.
Moving forward we are able to open as a bar from 12 noon on Friday 23/11/18 for drinks only along with bar nibbles. We’ll be offering table service in some areas, hot and cold drinks, mulled wine and cider, beers and lots more from our comprehensive drinks list. This week we’ll have our Christmas decorations up, music and a fabulous PapaKåta! Tipi that’s a collaboration between us and Yorkshire Tea / Taylors of Harrogate.
Any likes and shares would be much appreciated, just before we re-open on Friday we’ll chose a winner who’s liked and shared this post and they will win a table for 2 at our grand reopening (at a date to be confirmed!)
As soon as we have any further information we’ll be sure to let you know. Thank you for all your patience and support so far, it’s really kept us going!

Firstly we would like to thank all of our customers and industry friends for your support, your kind words and comments have helped us through a tough few days!

As some of you will be well aware our next and final guest chef night of the 2018 program with the incredible Atul Kochhar will be taking place on Tuesday 13th November 2018.
The 2018 guest chef program has been a major success with nights held by Daniel Clifford of Midsummer House, James Close of The Raby Hunt and Peter Sanchez-Iglesias of Casamia and Paco Tapas.
... Daniel provided a variety of dishes that have been on display at his fabulous 2 Michelin restaurant over the past 20 years.
James and Peter combined their Michelin starred knowledge to create a spectacular 11-course dinner, which included a course by our very own Andrew Pern (taking the total number of Michelin Stars in our kitchen that night to FIVE ⭐️)
We look to finish the program with a bang as Atul takes centre stage constructing an all Indian style menu for the evening. The cost for the dinner will be £95 per person and the evening will kick start at 7pm sharp! Drinks packages will also be available on the evening.
We have very limited space left for the dinner including a large ‘communal’ table so please contact us as soon as possible on 01904 619208 to secure your place for the evening.

We had a fantastic afternoon here yesterday. Lovely terrace we fantastic views of the park and river. We sat out for hours in the sun. Plenty of bar staff so we didn’t wait long to be served. Lovely cocktails - no different in price to other cities. The food is pricey but it’s to a very high standard and the portions are very good - we only needed to order starters for lunch and a side of chips. The prawn cocktail (also has salmon in it) was gorgeous. The pork/ham tarrine was lovely. It’s worth paying extra and having the posher chips.

User

Visited this restaurant on a Saturday evening, as we had booked late we were seated in a side room. The menu, service and food were simply excellent. What took me by surprise was allowing a dog into the eating area. I understand the restaurant is dog friendly which I get and have no issue with however the room we were sat in had a carpeted floor which I didn’t think was hygenic.

That said, we had a really excellent meal and enjoyed it immensely.

User

Visited The Star Inn the City this afternoon with my uncle and aunt for lunch. We all agreed that it was wonderful food and worth every penny. The olives and smoked almonds as nibbles are particularly special . Very good sized portions and we were only sorry we couldn't clear our plates. This also meant we weren't able to sample the desserts, all of which sounded beautiful. I will definitely be returning (hopefully for dessert).

User

User

Really lovely sat outside the star with the sun beaming down eating breakfast with a lovely coffee

User

Our first time here by recommendation from another bar, we only had time for drinks but can I just say what a Fabulous place this is, with a very warm welcome. Next time we're over in York we are deffo coming back for food and of course some more gin. Thank you very much!!!

User

Lovely place! Totally recommend it!

PS: The crab salad for starter is absolutely a delight for senses

User

I have been to the restaurant twice now once was the works Christmas meal which I orginsed and I couldbt fault it. I orginse many group bookings and it can be hard when things go wrong. Nothing went wrong and 20 people had a lovely evening, food was great and we got the private dining room which was lovely. I then visited with a few friends for an evening meal, again the food was excellent and staff were very good! We will definitely be back

User

Had a lovely visit to the star inn the city while celebrating my anniversary and early 50 th birthday celebrations with my son who will be away in France for my birthday in 2 weeks . The staff were amazing they made our celebrations extra special by providing cake and celebratory good wishes . I can not recommend this place highly enough and a big thank you to all the staff for making our day extra special

User

Great location with good food and great drinks we will be back Tony Leeman and Carolyn Harman xx

User

Absolutely loved this place, the food was amazing, cooked to perfection, struggled with what to eat because of the choices, the staff were very curtious and knowledgeable, will definately call in again when next in York, well done Mr Pern

User

Loved the food. I don't like prawns but the prawn cocktail that someone next to me had looked so nice I had to try it. Have to say I will be having it again it has converted me on to prawns it was delicious. I will definitely be going back.

User

Visited yesterday with 8 friends for breakfast, we regularly have breakfast here when we visit York together and usually it’s lovely however yesterday was not.

Three of us ordered a banger in a bun, 2 of which were fine but one was pink so my friend returned it and a few minutes later a waiter came to our table and rather than apologise, he made it out she was in the wrong and that it was suppose to be pink. She ordered some toast following this as was concerned to order the same again.

After my friend brought this to their attention some staff were rude and when we asked for the bill, rather than take the item off the bill they left it on until my friend brought it to their attention and told them to remove it and also charged her for toast which they should of provided as complimentary following the inconvenience.

A few of my friends also ordered poached eggs which were hard when brought to the table.

We won’t be returning in future.

User

Visited the Star last night with my husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We did the same last year. We had a lovely time although I must say the quality of the food, service and attention to detail has gone down hill since we last ate with you a year ago.

Over cooked eggs, prawn cocktail although delious was really difficult to eat out of the glass (I gave up half way through) dirty table not cleaned, pudding cutlery just put down in the mess on the table. We ordered pudding ate it and were then presented with another pudding with a happy anniversary message. A lovely touch but having already had pudding we didn't really want it. I would suggest that the message pudding should have been brought out first before we asked if we wanted to ordered pudding.

Disappointing, but despite the above we had a lovely night. Only a 3stars this time because we know how good you were...

User

It was quite average to be fair. Brought wrong meals out to start with and then my stake was still grazing grass on my plate it was that undercooked. Whippet inn a better choice for me

User

Great location, lovely food but disappointed with the portions, especially the crab starter. Additionally didn’t think the service would be affected by dining outside but it did unfortunately. Hopefully will be improved on our next visit.

User

A little disappointed, I found my starter under seasoned, my wife sent back her starter, it was cold. My main coarse was ok but a little gloopy, a bit like having MSG in your takeaway

Service was good. Been to the star in Harome several times and the star in the harbour and much better. Room for improvement. Concentrate on quality not bums on seats.

User

Terrible bar staff chewing gum whilst behind bar a no no then giving me a much less drink than a pint then the spotty unshaved bar person tells me who has drank for longer than he’s lived that is a pint ??? Yeah of froth won’t ever go back food hygiene terrible bar staff chewing gum at those prices!!!! High end my arse
