We’re loving being at Lake Buttermere this weekend for workshops, singing and rehearsals. Some great learning already!

Fancy being part of a great sounding choir? No experience of reading music? No problem. Pop along to our first rehearsal of the year at The International Anthony Burgess Foundation, Sunday 6 January, 5.30pm - 7.45pm.

The great American bard Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was not only a literary revolutionary and tireless champion of liberty, but also probably the century’s most high profile advocate of ‘the manly love of comrades’. In ‘To Walt with Love’, The Sunday Boys join specialists in literature and modern languages from the University of Nottingham to celebrate Whitman’s life and loves, and his abiding influence on LGBT+ cultures, through poetry, music and image.
Established as a gay rol...e-model or icon even before the word ‘gay’ acquired its modern meaning, Whitman has inspired some of the modern era’s most memorable queer writing, by figures as diverse as E.M. Forster, Allen Ginsberg, and two outstanding modernist poets of Iberia, the Spaniard Federico García Lorca and the Portuguese Fernando Pessoa. His verses have also been set to music by dozens of leading composers, many of whom also identified as gay or bisexual men. This event, featuring Whitman settings – both old, and newly composed especially for the Sunday Boys – explores how these artists’ love of Walt enhanced their sometimes troubled relationship with their sexuality, and shaped the identity of an international LGBT+ community.

What does Christmas mean to you?
Join The Sunday Boys for an evening of music, singing and reflection as they team up with Anglican priest, poet, writer and broadcaster Rachel Mann to explore their very own take on the festive period and what Christmas means to us. Re-imagining the traditional nine lessons and carols, The Sunday Boys embark on a queer exploration of the values and personal experience of Christmas.
The evening will feature a varied and exciting programme o...f original composition and arrangements such as; Hope There’s Someone by Anthony and the Johnsons, No man is an Island by Chris Hutchings and the body is a choir room by Michael Betteridge. The festivities will be thoughtfully articulated with readings from Rachel Mann and an array of special guests.
The Sunday Boys are Manchester’s male voice sensation, an unauditioned, inclusive male voice choir on a mission to reinvent male voice singing for the 21st century
