#worldmentalhealthday 🌎 It’s World Mental Health day today. Here at the Sussex Osteopaths we are invested in ensuring our patients mental well being is being cared for as well as their physical wellbeing. That’s why we are both undertaking a Mental Health First Aid qualification.
Here is an infografic from unum, offering some different ways to look after your mental health.
... And remember, there are always people who will take the time to listen if you ever find yourself in need of an open, non-judgemental ear. 💚

This week is ‘back pain awareness week’ ... and whilst back pain is by no means the only thing we treat, we see a lot of it!!! If you’ve got pain, don’t suffer in silence!! Give us a call on 01825 761294!

So it's national walking month this month!! (we can't believe it's May already either!) We've set ourselves the target of walking 100 miles this month, which with the help of our ginger four legged friend, should be a challenge but achievable!
After our previous post on the benefits of exercise we can't think of a reason not to set yourself a challenge to move more!!
... Today was our first proper walk this month! (We have serious respect for anyone who went out for longer than necessary in that awful weather yesterday!!) and despite the mud, it was fab!

ANATOMY ESSENTIALS!
Wow! This MUSCLE MONDAY came round quickly! We hope you've all had a great week in the sunshine! This week were are focusing on one of the big muscles of our shoulder joint.
DELTOID!... The Deltoid has three parts to it; Anterior, Lateral (middle) and Posterior fibres.
ACTION: 💪 - The lateral fibres Abduct the shoudler (move the arm away from the body) - The anterior fibres Flex the shoulder (outstretch the arm in front of your body) - The posterior fibres Extend the shoulder (reach the arm backwards behind the body)
ATTACHMENTS: ⛓️ - Lateral Clavicle - Acromion - Spine of scapula - Deltoid Tuberosity of Humorous
NERVE SUPPLY: ⚡ - Axillary Nerve (C5/C6) - motor function
BLOOD SUPPLY: ❤️ - Thoraco-acromial artery - Anterior and Posterior Circumflex humeral arteries
INJURY: 💥 It is unusual to get a strain or tear of the Deltoid muscle, particularly in isolation. Usually, if the injury is severe enough to have strained the Deltoid, there will be worse damage to the smaller muscles of the shoulder such as the Rotator Cuff muscles. Injuries can occur during overexertion with an eccentric contraction of the Deltoid (usually in weight lifting when returning the weight to the body from a lateral raise). Shoulder trauma such as dislocation and breast cancer surgery can disrupt the Axillary nerve. This can mean that the Deltoid does not receive any/limited neurological input and therefore weakens and atrophies.
Have a great week everyone, and don't forget to flex those muscles!! ✌️

ANATOMY ESSENTIALS!
So, as this is our first MUSCLE MONDAY, anatomy essentials post ... We thought we'd start with a biggy!
TRAPEZIUS!
... This is one of the most commonly treated muscles in our clinic, it's big, it's important and we abuse it every day!
Ever get that tired, 'knotted', achey feeling in the back of your shoulders after a long day at work? This is more than likely the Trapezius muscle.
ACTION: 💪 - Moves your scapula (shoulder blade) The Trapezius has three parts to it; The upper fibres elevate the scapula (shrug your shoulders), the middle fibres retract your scapula (pull your shoulders back); and the lower fibres depress the scapula (pull your shoulders downwards). - Extends and Side-Bends the Neck
ATTACHMENTS: ⛓️ - Occiput (skull) - Nuchal ligament - SP of C7 - T12 - Lateral Clavicle (collar bone) - Acromion - Spine of Scapula
NERVE SUPPLY: ⚡ - Accessory Nerve (Cranial Nerve XI) - motor function - C3/4 - sensory & proprioception function
BLOOD SUPPLY: ❤️ - Transverse Cervical Artery
PAIN: 💥 The Trapezius is such a big muscle, and it doesn't tend to get 'injured' as such. However, The Sussex Osteopaths treats the Trapezius on a very regular basis because it is such a vital postural muscle ... When we stay in one position for too long (for example, at our desks) the Trapezius fatigues. The lack of movement prevents good blood flow and the muscle becomes relatively hypoxic creating this unpleasant dull achey sensation.
Hold tight for Sunday's post where we will be showing you some simple stretches for the Trapezius muscle!!
If you're experiencing these symptoms, give us a call on 01825 761294. Like we said, this is something we treat multiple times a day! So don't suffer in silence, get those stiff shoulders sorted!!
Have a great week everyone, and don't forget to move!! ✌️

Don't let an injury put a stop to that!
