About The Swallows Return

A stunning Barn conversion offering a comfortable country pub setting, perfect for a bite to eat, drink or special occasion.

The Swallows Return Description

The Swallow's Return occupies buildings once known as North Barn, next to some important ancient track-ways which linked South Downs settlements from very early times. More recently, in the 18th century a windmill was constructed nearby and it was believed that the miller, John Oliver, used the sails of the windmill to signal smugglers.
A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Just returned home after a lovely meal and I can safely say I was not disappointed. Had a table of 12 guests who all had either a set menu of 2/3 courses.. plenty to choose from and reasonable prices. Service was excellent very friendly and welcoming staff who came to check that we had what we needed and if we needed more drinks etc. Think we were served by Lorraine (apologise if incorrect) she was very attentive and double checked our large order. We booked the swallows return as a meal for after a funeral in Worthing as people involved didn’t want to cater or have a large fuss and it was a lovely way to finish the day with family. Swallows return .. I will be returning!

Just had a family meal, was really nervous as I had just read some recent reviews! All I can say is please ignore the negative reviews, we've just had such a lovely meal. The pub is stunning, the staff very attentive and the food beautiful. Will definitely be back. Thank you for a lovely relaxing Sunday afternoon

User

Just came down with my best friend haven't been in years just had the most amazing steak and mushroom pie it was done so beautiful filled the hole amazing would come again lovely friendly staff very chatting and welcoming.

User

Have been going to this pub/restaurant for three years now and never had a bad meal staff are excellent and very friendly the manager is also a nice chap always says hello and remembers what drinks we have keep up the good work.😀

User

Got turned away in the Hassocks pub who couldn't handle two walk ins at 1-05 on a weekday. Car park and resturant half full but not enough staff to feed two.

Half hour later arrived at The Swallow's Return and were offered the choice or resturant or bar service. Settled for the latter and had a great festive meal served by freindly willing staff.

Thanks Swallows saved our day.

After being turned away from an empty local pub/restaurant as they had 'nothing available' (mum is in a wheelchair.) we arrived at the swallows return to be greeted by lovely, friendly, welcoming staff who turned what had become a nightmare into a positive enjoyable meal out. They couldn't do enough for us.The food was delicious and we will be back again.

User

A lovely pub and restaurant. Lovely location. We had a set 3 course Mother’s Day menu at £20.95 and was surprised at the portion size and quality,it was delicious. Had prawn and lobster cocktail, Lamb duo and hot drink and mini pud (as couldn’t fit a full sized pud in!). It was all cooked to perfection and tasty beyond words and what a bargain. The staff were friendly and polite and we had a laugh with our waiter (sorry didn’t get his name). We were served fast and efficiently and was welcomed warmly. I couldn’t recommend the swallows return enough.

User

Lovely converted barn. Really nice layout. Excellent meal. Friendly staff.

No reflection on The Swallows Return but best accessed by car. We live only about 30 minutes away and decided to walk there. No pavements near and found ourselves having to walk in the roads. We will use the car next time. Lol. We will definitely return.

User

It was an ok meal the burger I had was a bit dry and over cooked the chips and desert were fine I liked the fact the staff asked me whether I wanted a Marlborough sav blanc wine or house chillian makes a difference to me ,! Thanks

User

food was plain at best! the place was pretty dirty, menus covered in stuff serfices tacky tables left cluttered for the duration and the service slow. kids were fairly happy with what they had.

User

Not great ,mostly everything we asked for they didn’t have .and then what we did get was Luke warm or even cold .kids didn’t really enjoy the food either .wont go again

User

Arrived on time for a mother's day lunch . Just been seated an hour late and was told we've only allowed 1.5 hours per table which is to short. Great when there's no occasion but not a place to go if likely to be busy . Next we'll try somewhere else.

User

Good food but appalling service. Ordered at 6:30pm, starters arrived 7:20pm and main course 8:10pm. Only got an apology after we complained. 15 mins after main course cleared and no offer of dessert / coffee so didn’t bother and left. Waitress certainly didn’t offer service with a smile. We were given a bottle of wine as an apology but would have preferred to have been told about the wait when we were seated as we would have opted to eat elsewhere.

User

After a long day travelling we were recommended this restaurant by our landlady. However, the service and food was not what we expected from a vintage inn. We ordered 3 meals (once the totally stretched to the limit bar maid finally took it) One meal arrived fairly quickly, was hot and looked delicious, luckily we advised my friend to start eating as the remaining two dishes arrived 15 min later and only after having chased them up. The chicken was extremely dry and the sausage with gravy was mediocre. We had to chase up condiments 3 times and where given the wrong ones. The staff was clearly out of their depths. It wasn’t that busy but having a few more staff wouldn’t have gone amiss.

With hopes held high I booked the festive menu for 3 adults and a child today at 1.00pm. Myself and my ten year old and my friend and her amazing eighty something Mother who had travelled over especially to join us on the train from Emsworth. We ordered our drinks to start with requesting a jug of tap water alongside. We then ordered 3 roast turkey lunches with trimmings and sausage and mash for my son. At 2.15pm, an hour and 15 minutes later, when our stomachs were rumbling like thunder, water seemed to be something one only dreamt of in the desert and malnutrition was setting in, our lunches arrived. What didn’t arrive were the much anticipated words “Sorry about the wait”. In fact the waitress was positively scary so it was with much trepidation I asked again for some water. After eating our lunch which was very nice, although maybe that was just because we were starving at that point and would probably have eaten the turkey unplugged, we ordered three puddings. By 3.10pm these hadn’t arrived either and the lovely lady from Emsworth started to worry she would miss her train. So, I went in search of the manager. Waitress no 1 went to find him but did not return. Waitress number 2 said he was on his break. Probably hiding I wondered, from the hordes of underserved. Finally waitress no 3 arrived, direct from charm school (not) and proceeded to tell me that they were very busy, delays were inevitable and the reason the puddings were taking so long was because the waitresses had to plate them themselves. Waitresses putting food onto plates with a jug of custard? Whatever next? Having inhaled our bake well cake we went to pay the bill. They had removed £3.00 per adult as a gesture of good will but still charged us for our side of cauliflower cheese we were never given. I again asked to see the manager, but he was still on a break. Ski break? Weekend break? Hip break? Who knew! But there was no time to challenge the bill because Southern Rail were for once running on time. So, dear SWALLOWS, it is unlikely that I will RETURN, but thank you for reminding me how to get customer service so very very wrong.

User

Went there with my friend yesterday for an early dinner 5 pm as they do food all day & it was shocking 1st the extremely rude Barman 2nd I was charged £11.70 for a glass of sauvigon blanc & an elderflower soft drink really seriously !?

3rd went into the restaurant which was almost empty as it was just gone 5 pm & were told off by the barman as we sat down on a small table that was reserved but had no reserved sign on it !? We were then left wondering & waiting for about 5 mins @ the bar area For the barman to then come over & ask us if we were still eating ... I just replied no we are going to world's end ... Iam appalled ... Not going back

We went for Lunch Bank Holiday Monday 28/5/18

For my Husbands Birthday.

Family of 6 Adults

As usual we had great food. And absolutely great service EVENTUALLY 40mins after we were seated !!

We had booked 3days prior. We had to go to the bar to get drinks as there only appeared to be one waitress run off her feet trying to keep every one happy. It was a full hour and a half from sitting down to getting our food.

We witnessed a very upset diner that had been waiting two hours with her family for food. The waitress had to deal with this as well they paid for drinks and left.

We were told that the “Worlds End” had closed their doors to serving any more food because they could not cope. And they had all descended on the Swallows Return.

We feel the person in charge MANAGER! Did not deal with the situation at all well. As people that had booked in the restaurant were made to wait up to 2 hours for food or drinks while orders were taken at the bar for walk ins and they were all served first.

We enjoy this restaurant and the food and staff. But would now think twice about visiting as we were not treated fairly. If it had not been for the waitress (Jackie) who was doing her best. We also would have left.

More training maybe for management.

Nice pub, disappointing food, in both quality and preparation. so 1 star given, (mash and veg were awful). Defiantly not a gastro pub.

Me and my wife went in at 14:45 on a Wednesday. We sat down (in the restaurant part) and waited. Then waited some more, well it was now 15:15. So I got up, found menus and we chose. I waited for another 10 minutes. So I went to get served at the bar. 1 person was ahead of me and another family came in at the same time. I let them go in front as they had kids. We waited. The girl served the family and in that time 3 other sets of people started waiting. She finished and asked "who was next" so I said "me" and everyone else started commented and shaking their heads. It took the family to state that I'd actually been ahead of them, for everyone to pipe down.

So I wanted to order and the girl realised I don't have a table number. She said that it's table service at the restaurant. I explained and she didn't care. The other people who claimed to be there before me were all sniggering, as if some kind of justice had been served.

I went back and had to walk up to the waitress and tell her to take our drinks order and food order. No apology. Nothing.

Overall - average food at a high price. Service is 0, literally 0. Clientele, well full of low life's who explain why I left Worthing 15 years ago.

It's a shame. Used to be brilliant, busy, and vibe was perfect.
