About The Thornhill

Welcome to the Thornhill

The Thornhill Description

Built over 400 years ago, originally called The Leopard, The Thornhill still retains some of the original built features, including a stone entrance dating back to 1673 inscribed with W. C. and F. C. after Walter Caverley and his wife Francis Caverley.

Here at The Thornhill, Calverley, we strive to great service in a beautiful setting. Using fresh local produce, The Thornhill offers delicious pub food, served to a very high standard, our menu ranges from snacks, lunch options, traditional pub classics & a some great à la carte options.

It has been said that there are secret tunnels running from the pub down to Kirkstall Abbey built many years ago by the monks. There are some sealed off areas of the cellars that have not been opened for many years - adding some mystery to the building and helping to create its unique atmosphere!

Went for mothers day/birthday meal.not been for a while but the food service was good even though it was busy and the food was delicious as always.i highly recommend.

User

We had a beautiful meal after my sons First Hole Communion in May- we will be back!!! Food and service was excellent!

User

There not many pubs, in the known Universe that are this complete In quality and beer and food. This is perfect pub, perfect atmosphere , good prices....

User

The best kept pint you will ever have served by great staff in a friendly environment , not many good pubs like this left .

User

I have lived in the village for 5 years and rarely visit the other two pubs. Just a great local pub with a modern but welcoming feel. Food is always good too.

User

I had the lamb shank, can I say it was absolutely beautiful, the meat literally fell off the bone I'd have paid double the price I paid, will definitely be returning very soon

User

Called in today, very varied menu and lovely tasting food

User

We went for dinner (4.30pm) waitress was very friendly. Smile on her face. Decent service. Food was very tasty. Wife had a steak cooked nicely. Even the fries were decent. Seasoned and no grease. I had Mexican chicken smothered in chilli. Cheese. And salsa, guac. With rice. Would go back just for that chicken. Curious to taste more. Will be back. With friends next time.

There were 10 of us dining, celebrating my Mum and Dad's 50th wedding anniversary. Everybody's meals were lovely, nicely cooked and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Vegetables came separately but there wasn't enough for the 3 people they were meant for. We were seated in the 'Hay Loft' and unfortunately it was freezing, need to think about some heating in there.

User

Not been for ages. Had lunch and the food was lovely. Service was excellent; very friendly & quick. Good food & a lovely relaxing atmosphere.

User

I love the cosy interior and it was quite busy and bustley which creates a good atmosphere. Both starters, deep fried brie and salt and pepper chicken were very nice. Beef bourginon and mustard mash was delicious washed sown with a nice rosè.

Limited choice of cocktails though.

User

Goats cheese salad was gorgeous!!

User

Style over substance.

Interior is great although very drafty in the stable section!

Sunday lunch. 1 Yorks pud overcooked(burnt),beef brisket very dry, 1 lonely roast potato,

Mash lumpy, and the veg took an eternity to arrive and we had to ask for more as there was only 1 small plate for 4 adults!

Try the Royal or 7 Steps in Pudsey which are simply fantastic!

User

All ok, but why do these eating places feel it's ok to rip (RIP!) you off for wine. This is a pub which does food, not a restaurant, stop ripping people off and people like me may return.

User

Still a solid four as a pub (decent beers, great layout, friendly staff) but the food menu has absolutely tanked.

Until recently, the food was high quality and distinct but they've replaced it with a fairly generic menu that you'd be more likely to find in a budget pub chain; the only twist being that it's twice the price!

Standard pub burger and fries in a tacky plastic basket? £11! 5oz steak and fries, with no accompaniment on a tiny plate? Same story. There are better options far cheaper locally.

I'll still drink in here as it's a lovely pub but I won't be eating here again any time soon. Such a shame given the previous standard of food on offer.

User

Nice staff, very apologetic when we complained about food, however handled totally wrong especially by the chef. Not impressed. Will not be returning.

User

Been going for 20 Years like the location , beer is good , atmosphere can be really good at times. Local people visit but something is missing , with better friendly upper management that make there selves know to the regulars this pub would have no problems at being the best pub in the area

User

Atmosphere was a bit impersonal but food arrived very quickly after the order was taken. Tasty homemade (?) pie but vegetables were undercooked and tasteless. I’d probably look elsewhere for a meal in Calverley.

User

Really bad experience at The Thornhill today unfortunately. Booked a table in advance but still had to wait 50 minutes to be seated and only then because we had to repeatedly ask when a table would be ready. Clearly the pub was busy, the staff untrained and unable to deal with the pressure. Would have expected a sincere apology at the least and perhaps the offer of a drink on the house due to the delay. Finally we were seated at a wobbly table in a dark, cold, dingy corner with stacks of dirty plates and cutlery next to it. It was at this point we left and went elsewhere. On balance given that the thornhill are asking £14.95 for a standard 2 course Sunday lunch would expect the service to be significantly better.
