About The Three Daws Public House

The pub was originally opened in 1488, and to this day still strives to keep to it's origins with home cooked meals and perfectly served Ale's that we take our pride in. No admission or readmission after 23: 00 Fri and Sat evenings.

The Three Daws Public House Description

Standing at the river edge at the foot of the old High Street, it has for centuries served as a home from home for the river men, been the haunt of smugglers and was regularly raided by the old naval press gangs.

It is older than Shakespeare's house, older than many well known ancient buildings, and is a place to reflect on past and very hard times.

One of the oldest taverns in the country - this ancient inn (now named) the Three Daws is almost four hundred and fifty years old and first gained its licence in 1565.

The Three Daws began its life by being converted from five traditional styled wood fronted cottages. The general structure is therefore some years older that the length of its history as a Thames tavern, and probably goes further back to at least 1501.

A rambling building typical of its period, the wooden structure of its construction is reputed to be the work of shipwrights who were seeking work at that time, owing to a depression in their waterside trade.

During the days of the big sailing merchant ships of two centuries ago, it was also used as an accommodation and it had eleven bedrooms, connected by five complete staircases.

The outer structure has evidence of fire damage in its history, particularly where the wood front has been replaced by plaster facing and brickwork. However, during the great fire of 1727, the main structure was undamaged by the disaster which did manage to reach the surrounding properties.

A small extension at the North of the main building has its own independent record, for it was once separated from the tavern and used as steam packet offices. . . Later it became a reading room for the local watermen until brought in to use as steam tug offices.

At one time large sailing merchant ships used to anchor off the Three Daws while awaiting supplies and a fair wind or, on returning from long overseas voyages. Back in those days, the waterside tavern was a very popular place for seamen of all nationalities, echoing to the sound of the sea shanties whilst liquid refreshments were consumed by the gallon.

A century or more ago, the Three Daws was just one of a large number of taverns catering for waterside people along the front. Other nearby houses included the Falcon, King of Prussia, and the very famous Amsterdam, which was immortalised in a well-known sea shanty.

In 1984, the Three Daws was closed for the first time in almost five centuries. During all of the fires in Gravesend, including the great fire of 1850, the Three Daws remained virtually unscathed. Today it is owned by Mr. Lester Banks and has been sympathetically restored to its original charm and character.

So stay and enjoy the fayre and reflect on those bygone times.

You know where you can get a really good pint of Birra Moretti? The Three Daws. The beer tastes great and the Riverside setting is almost as though you were suddenly unexplainedly on holiday if you squint hard enough, and I expect to be squinting quite hard before I leave.

User

What a great find - decided to take my friend for a Magical Mystery Birthday Surprise and took her over on the ferry from Tilbury - what a beautiful very old historical pub with the most friendly staff - could’ve sat at the bar chatting and having a joke with them and other customers- special mention to Lisa- thank you - such a huge choice of good food - couldn’t fault it - beautiful view over the river from our table - will definitely revisit - thank you

This is my former local pub and nothing has made me appreciate it more than moving away. A wonderful rotating selection of local real ales, friendly staff and atmosphere, and good food.

User

The new Spring/Summer menu is now on offer, I had The Allotment, an interesting idea, where the contents are adjusted to available produce. Yesterday it was grilled mackerel fillet, very nice. Also tried a new Dessert, Cocoa Cake, sounds and looks a bit on the heavy side, but is actually quite light. Thoroughly enjoyed my lunch, including a couple of decent ales.

User

Reserved meal for 8! We absolutely love it here, delicious food and great service. Nice to have such a varied menu of good old fashioned food! Highly recommend

We love this place. The food is always lovely and hot (not from a microwave), the staff are always friendly they can't do enough for for you. We even do battle with the bridge and tunnel to come for lunch and gypsy tart

User

Hired the lower function room for a surprise 80th birthday party. Can’t fault it friendly staff in kitchen and bar, buffet was lovely and bar service good. Would definitely recommend this venue (my only criticism would be there’s a small step onto dance floor which is easy to trip on ) .

User

Food outstanding and service great. Very friendly staff and nothing was too much trouble. We will be back soon.

User

A great place to people watch..

User

I do love this place. The floor is wonky and you can feel the age of the building. It has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Great location and good prices. The band nights are also worth going to.

We had a ‘pleasant’ roast today - my one complaint is that it was drowned in gravy.

I like to taste the food, not just gravy and it wasn’t clear that the meal came with it already on.

The friendly and helpful staff member offered to take it back, but I was starving by that time and my friend had already started eating, so I declined and put up with it sloshing about drowning everything.

Note to the chef - maybe gravy in a pot on the side would be a good idea? It would have made it much more enjoyable to have had a choice.

To end on a positive, I still love the place.

Went yesterday and had cod and chips for £10.50. Thought I'd been given a kiddies meal it was so small. I did however have masses of peas and about 10 chunky chips. When we spoke to the manageress we were told that they were the right portion weight. Hadn't been for a while so I hope there are better value meals on the menu. Not sure I'll be rushing back but if I go again I certainly won't be having the cod and chips. Very disappointing.
