About The Ugly Duckling

Our aim is to provide a casual and informal space for our customers.

The food style is strong & bold

The service professional yet approachable.

The Ugly Duckling Description

Due to open mid summer 2016…

The Ugly Duckling occupies a handsome pub built in the early 1800s on what was fields used by farmers to rest and feed their livestock. The road on which we sit was a major thoroughfare throughout the middle ages. The restoration will return the building to its former glory but with a modern twist, combining the best of old and new.

The original idea was to open a business where all of the owners would like to go on their days off and spend quality time with friends and family.

We like the idea of bringing conversation back to the dining table and what better way to do it than sharing food and drink?

The aim is to provide a casual and informal space but with no compromise on the quality of the food, a place where everybody should feel comfortable.

Our inspiration comes from dining tables across Europe. The food style is strong and bold, with an emphasis on simplicity and using the finest ingredients we can source.

Our Chefs grill over charcoal and wood on our custom built grills throughout the year, in winter we will also brine, cure, smoke and braise. In the summer you might even catch our chefs cooking outside!

The Bar is housed in what was once a coal store so expect to see exposed timber, brickwork and other original features. Here you will find a well researched cocktail list that blends the timeless and the contemporary, serving bespoke drinks alongside the classics. The spirits and wines available will be extensive and diverse. Beer wise our keg lines will dispense a mix of regional real ales, craft beers and more obviously cutting-edge stuff from breweries as far afield as Brooklyn.

The service professional yet approachable, don’t be afraid to ask. We look forward to seeing you in the summer.

Our pubs are the heart and soul of our society and culture, yet every day 3 pubs close their doors for good. Between VAT, business rates and Beer Duty, 1 in every 3 pounds spent in a pub goes to the taxman. Meet the newest member of the Ugly Duckling Crew - Damsel 🐣
A few weeks back some ducks decided to make the duckling their home and made a nest round the back.
We have been keeping a watchful eye over their eggs as they take 28 days to hatch.
... They hatched and left yesterday but we noticed they had left one egg behind.
Shortly after we discovered the egg this little lady hatched.
So it looks like she is staying with us, our real life Ugly Duckling
Welcome Damsel ❤️

Sunny Summer Sunday’s are on the horizon 🌅 so to celebrate six different Spritz including Venetian, Watermelon and the classic Aperol will be 2 for £10 all day every Sunday 🍹

User

Please remember we won’t be serving our Sunday menu today due to the restaurant being used for indoor seating (which has worked quite well seeing as we might need to take cover 😅)

User

The weather isnt holding us back, the ciders chilled and the pigs are roasting! Plenty of shelter in cider tent if needed aswell as lots of seating indoors! 🐷

User

It is now less than a week away from our annual pig & apple festival 🍏🐷🍎
The weather looks like it’s on our side 🌞⛱
There will be limited parking on the day as we are expecting a record attendance so we would advise getting taxis or lifts 🚕🚕🚕
... Don’t forget to bring your blankets and deck chairs 🍺🍷🥃🥂🍾🍹🍸

The Ugly Duckling has become our main restaurant after moving to this lovely area 17 months ago! The food is delicious and the atmosphere in the bar area is nice too if your just looking to have a drink or a nice cocktail

on the patio!,

I can recommend the tempura cod as a starter or if your into steaks, my fillet steak last night was cooked to perfection! Unfortunately I had no room for dessert!

The service was good too!

User

Staff were very attentive and happy. It was very busy but still never changed anything food was very hot when it came out very enjoyable experience would definitely go again!

User

Second time visiting here and again it was lovely! The room was great and had everything we needed. We had dinner and then breakfast which was included in the price. Dinner was amazing, all the food looked & tasted great! Only thing is that one of our starters was bought out wrong, the waitress realised but gave them to us as a good will gesture, however forgot to remove from the bill! Only realised when we had left, So ended up paying for the 3rd starter anyway. They were very busy but would definitely return!x

User

Myself and hubby stayed for a couple of days in May. What a fabulous place to stay. The room was very clean the staff very friendly and the service was exceptional. The price for the room was very good and the breakfast was fab. I would definitely recommend to a friend and would stay again myself.

User

My daughter booked this as a late Mother’s Day ,, got to say I’m very impressed, food was lovely and much more than I expected of a set menu .

Anyone who knows me I’m a nightmare to please so thumbs up ..

waitress was also very attentive

User

Me and my wife dined here on sat 14th July and we loved the food. It is a very clean place with style The staff were lovely. We will return 5 star

User

I was at the ugly Duckling for a party the food was amazing. I had chicken Kiev & I think it’s the nicest I’ve ever had . The staff were friendly and there was a good selection of gin . So a thumbs up 👍🏻 from me 😀

User

I booked a suprise stay here for my boyfriends birthday, on arrival we were grated by a lovely lady and and shown to our room, we stayed in overtly olive, a room with a jacuzzi bath and I can honestly say it was one of the most beautiful rooms I have ever stayed in!

We also came down for dinner on the evening and the food was absolutely delicious.

When it come to ordering drinks we were served by the same lady from check in, I work run a pub so when it comes to choosing a drink I was fed up with the usual drinks, she recommended a gin based drink which I thoroughly enjoyed.

We loved it that much we have booked for March! Thank you for an amazing time and we will see you again soon :)

User

Absolutely love it here, the place is beautiful, spotlessly clean. The food is amazing, good size portions and all is super tasty! Have been a few times recently and every time the food has been stunning!

The staff are all pleasant and helpful, and the gin list is awesome! Definitely a favourite of mine.

User

We have grown to like The Ugly Duckling at Long Lane. It has improved greatly in quality of service over the last few months and we have recently visited with local friends. The sweet courses are really nice and the range of real ales are also getting more interesting - a little more work is needed on them to be better than 'average'.

User

Had a nice meal there .But I don't think it's worth the money ..Presentation was good .The Yorkshire was a ready made which would have nice a homes made one the portion was slightly on the skimpy side ..But it was nice ..

User

I ordered fillet steak which was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing - my problem is that if I just ordered the fillet steak for £18 it would have arrived with just half a tomato and a pinch of watercress.... I had to pay £3.50 for some chips and £3.50 for a side salad. I’ve never been anywhere before where you have to pay extra to have a full meal (well, maybe Nando’s) You wouldn’t order a beef dinner and expect to pay for your vegetables on top! Very disappointing and has put me off going back in the future.

User

Having been here quite regularly over the last year I think it's gone down hill a bit . My meal yesterday of chicken Kiev with roast cauliflower was awful and certainly not worth £15 .

User

Good meal overall and second time to visit this place. I can see why many would recommend here and certainly enjoyed some dishes tonight.

One steak we ordered as medium came out well done, we sent it back immediately but it came back out with comment "we checked with chef and it's a medium". This is not a kind of service or attitude you should provide to your customers irrespective of regular or non-regular customer.

Re-training on how to cook steak required and difference between medium and well done need to be understood.

User

shame the quality of the food has suffered since first opening......in MY opinion, it appears that the profit margin is more important than customer satisfaction

User

We went for Sunday lunch here today following good recommendations. I chose the lamb. The seasonal veg and roast potatoes were delicious however, the meat was very fatty and inedible. I therefore left the meat and ate around it. I did inform the waitress however, nothing was done about this. It's a shame as the restaurant is situated in such a lovely place.

User

Having booked a table for Sunday roast around 3pm 3 weeks ago and after ordering the roast beef & eating our starters we were told you’d run out of Yorkshire puddings!

We were offered a free dessert. Our final bill was someone else’s with drinks on we didn’t order.

We are regulars & have had a couple of great Sunday roasts here, we always ask for extra roast potatoes (& have been told either no or given a tiny one each) and extra gravy (again a tiny jug is given), more than happy to pay for them.

It seems that you don’t account for bookings or are giving other people extra ( which we’ve seen - “friend of the chef, said he’d sort me out”) at the detriment of other customers.

It’s really put us off coming back.

Never had a bill brought to the table, always had to go & ask & pay at the bar.

Was great when it first reopened but definitely going downhill which is a real shame.

User

Encouraged by the mainly positive reviews, I visited yesterday evening together with my wife and daughter. I'm sorry to say that the experience was poor.

First impression was to wonder why the staff seemed nervous and unable to smile at customers. Off day for everyone or normal ?

On the whole the food was fine, not special in any way, simply fine considering the price point. The exception from this last night was my choice of the Ox cheek & chocolate stout pie. The pie had an overcooked crust, leaving it hard and dry. What lay beneath was a generous filling of very well flavoured ox cheek however it was inedible due to to it's extreme dryness.

As the waiting staff seemed oblivious to our presence, despite the restaurant being only around 25% occupied, we were unable to easily bring this to attention.

This led to me leaving the pie and eating the well prepared and tasty vegetable accompaniment.

When a waiter, finally, came to our table to clear the main course I explained that the pie was inedible. Shortly after, the restaurant manager came to ask what was wrong with the pie. I explained that it was exceptionally dry and had the appearance of being left under a heat lamp for a day.

Following some discussion she offered a free desert to make up for it. Any decent restaurant would offer to take the offending item off the bill and after suggesting this, I'm glad to say that she did.

I accept that the place has been open for quite some time and appears to get, mainly, favorable reviews. Shame that they got it wrong last night.

Anywhere can mess up a dish from time to time, it happens. The key is in how that is dealt with. Something, I conclude, that the staff have not been trained to deal with.

User

Disapointing..

After reading good reviews we decided to go here for Sunday lunch. The service from the staff was great welcoming, friendly and attentive but the disapointment was firstly the setup. The tables for 2 were situated very close to one nother and could easily hear the conversation of the couple seated 2 foot away like they were on our own table and so stops you speaking to one another as you simply dont want people listening. At the time it was an early booking and it was very quiet but yet the 3 parties who were eating (3 x2 people) we were all seated in row?! Instead of being spread throughout the pub?

The food was also a BIG disapointment, the taste was nothing special or to be noted and the portion size was really bad I ordered pan friend chicken but only had on ny plate 3 cuts of chicken and a yorkshire pudding?!!! The vegetable we had to share was on a little plate and should of been at least a portion of that each instead of having to share between them.

Correct me if im wrong but dont you eat out to feel full and satisifed instead of leaving the pub not full and not satisfied?

The prices were no where near what they should be, your just paying for the location and the pub name not for the quality i'm afraid.
