The Wild Boar

About The Wild Boar

Traditional 4 star Inn in tranquil surroundings, Windermere. Part of English Lakes Hotels

The Wild Boar Description

The Wild Boar Inn, Grill & Smokehouse - A few minutes drive from the east side of Windermere is The Wild Boar, dating back to the 18th century but with numerous changes and additions since then. There’s an immediately welcoming feel to the place as you step into the flagstoned bar, which serves beer from the resident Wild Boar Brewhouse. The 33 rooms, which are divided into classic, feature and luxury, include three suites with their own log burning stoves and seven rooms with their own patio. Room names have a porcine theme as in Old Spot, Large White, Old Berkshire and Wild Boar. The latter is a suite with a round copper bath in the bedroom. The inn sits in 72 acres (29ha) of semi-ancient woodland (with tarn) through which there are a number of walking trails plus a ‘wild gym trail’. Archery and clay pigeon shooting are available too. The Wild Boar Inn, Grill & Smokehouse, Crook, Windermere LA23 3NF: 015394 45225, www. englishlakes. co. uk Prices from: £40 per person, based on two people sharing a double or twin room.

Went here last night for my partners birthday we had the deli board to share then fillet steak the food was amazing couldn’t fault it at all. The pub itself was loverly so much character and the staff were very good felt very welcomed. Wish we had booked a room. Will definitely be back we will be recommending here to everyone it was perfect thanks

User

We have been staying at this superb hotel at least once a year since 2010 and have enjoyed every stay. This year is no different. Great relaxing stay every time. Thank you to all the staff. Even George who wasn’t here this stay!

User

We got married at the Wild Boar last year & came back for our first anniversay. What can I say other than the staff were wonderful & nothing was too much trouble for them as it was at our wedding which was really special. Our room was fantastic & the food good as always. We returned to the lake via the woodland walk where we'd gone in the land rover to where our wedding photos had been taken. Just like last year the weather was perfect - the sun was shining & the autumn colours were stunning. Thanks to all the staff who made it such a memorable stay & we'll definately be back!

User

We got married at the Wild Boar just under a year ago and we’re invited back for our anniversary stay. As always our stay was perfect from start to finish! The room we stayed in ‘The Wild Boar Suite’ was beautiful and even had a freestanding copper bath. In the evening we went for dinner and it did not disappoint. We both had the steak and they were cooked to perfection finishing crumble and custard.

Thank you to everyone at the Wild Boar for making our wedding anniversary so special. We will of course be back. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a quirky wedding venue or a special overnight stay.

User

We are currently on mini-moon reliving the incredible wedding day which we had at the Wild Boar. Jeanette, Irene and team did an incredible job of looking after us and ensuring that all our requests were taken care of.

We all had the best time. The food was unbelievable, the staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. And our friends and family have all commented the same!

Having planned weddings myself for 9 years, I can genuinely say that on the day I had no worries at all. I knew that everything was in the best hands.

Jeanette, Irene, George, Adam and Natalia - you guys are outstanding and without your help, humour and advice the day would not have been the same.

Thank you so much - we cannot wait to return for our anniversary!

Love Mr and Mrs Gummett xxx

User

The most exquisite sandwiches and lunch food ever and if you want afternoon tea or sharing platter this is your place plus beautiful grounds and you can book clay shooting too! Love it 😊

User

Stunning food in a beautiful building. We eat here regularly and have never had a bad meal or less than attentive service. We treated ourselves to a night’s stay in the new year too and had a fantastic time.

User

Stayed for one night DBB and it was fabulous. We come every year around this time, the food, the atmosphere the welcoming staff and the lovely room make it a pleasure. We will be back soon.

User

Stayed for 1 night in room 11. We had the afternoon tea on arrival which was delicious! We were so full afterwards we didn’t want dinner. Had a sharing platter later on in the evening which was very good as was the beer and wine. Our room was beautiful. The copper bath was very luxurious.

There was a lovely outdoor ‘private garden’ area which we would love to have taken advantage of if it wasn’t for the rain. Will definitely book again in better weather x

User

One of the best meals I’ve ever had! Staff are very helpful, the room was lovely and great to have a walk through the woods before breakfast. Fantastic place!

User

I got married there a week ago and it was the best day of my life. All my ideas came to life nothing was too much trouble the staff were brilliant. The food was amazing all of my guests couldn't stop talking about it. Highly recommend this beautiful place.

User

A lovely afternoon tea. Makes a change from the usual very little savoury and loads of sweet. This was just a nice balance of both. Would certainly go again and would definitely recommend it. The Wild Boar itself is a quirky place with plenty of atmosphere.

User

We have just come back from 2 nights at The Wild Boar

What a great place ! We arrived on a very snowy Thursday and so it was lovely to walk in to roaring open fires. All the staff were friendly helpful and always smiling not something you see to often these days !

Our room was number 29 which was really nicely decorated , with an enormous bed and a bathroom with both bath and shower lovely !

The fireside seats near the bar were very welcoming after a walk on Friday and the home brewed beer went down well .

As for the food this was also very tasty breakfast choices great and all served to your table Eggs benedict very popular

As for dinner steaks all round on the first evening and I had a special on Friday Fish and seafood bowl - I would definitely recommend it !

Reasonably priced and great tasting wine added to 2 great evenings

We will definitely be back 😀👍

User

Stayed Friday Saturday nights DBB. Our room was a disappointment! Room 7 to me is not a Feature room, and I think must be one of the last rooms to be booked, you certainly wouldn't choose it!! pricey for what it is and I'm not sure what the"feature"of the room is meant to be! Surely not their very dated bathroom with tiny bath very poor shower and lack of any kind of heating, no where to dry your towel after your very uncomfortable bath or shower!! This aside food was very good staff pleasant surroundings lovely although each night the fire in the seating area of the restaurant was neglected and as a result was out by the time you sat to have coffee or a drink after your meal. This is our third visit and would go again making sure we never got room 7 again, come on WB either down grade the room or do something to the bathroom it sure needs it!!!

User

Had a great time in this lovely hotel with fantastic people on a very special weekend.

The hotel made our stay extra special with how they catered for the dogs. Baskets, food bowls and towels provided, not to mention free chew sticks.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and there was a great selection of spirits and beers to be enjoyed in front of open fires.

The exterior doesn't do the place justice but I hope people aren't put off because there's a real gem inside.

We would happily go back.

User

Went for afternoon tea today and firstly would like to say the food was amazing. Shame can’t be said about the service. No manager really in charge, had to go and find a wine menu after 10 minuets of try to make eye contact with a member of staff who would see you trying to get their attention but chose to ignore you and walk past. Afternoon tea was served but at no point did any member of staff ask if everything was ok hence us calling them over several times for things that were missing. Having to ask for more drinks to be served they would bring them after a wait and not take the empty ones on the table making the table very cramped for a group of 14. Ended up being told by the waiter that I had ordered the wrong drinks (when myself and my friend next to me had been ordered the same drinks before) and just gave me a dirty look when I corrected him and walked away without a word of apology. We are supposed to be back in a couple of weeks but after today’s service would make me think twice. Amazing food. Very disappointed with the service.

User

The hotel was cosy and the food was beautiful. The staff were extremely friendly however the service was quite slow.

We stayed in a double room which was nice, however the radiator did not work and we found the hotel noisey. Doors slamming and the walls were so thin I could hear the neighbouring guests snoring.

If we were to visit again it would be for dining only

User

Mixed experience! As a b&b, it’s great: fantastic room, stylishly decorated, very clean, very well equipped. I’ve worked in hospitality and it feels like housekeeping take pride in offering a lovely experience. If you like walking and nature there’s the huge bonus of stunning woodland, full of bluebells and wildlife, which is owned by the hotel. There are signposted walks and fitness equipment and loads of information to help you appreciate the beautiful surroundings. There’s even a tarn with a bird hide.

However.... I wouldn’t bother eating dinner here. The food aspires to be something it isn’t, yet the prices are surprisingly high. The staff were all friendly and pleasant but the service was terrible. It took 40 minutes to get our drinks at dinner. There were a few lazy substitutes in the food we ordered, like a sharing plate that was meant to include hand cooked vegetable crisps but what appeared was just a pot of cheap ready-salted. The rolls were obviously stale and then reheated so hot they shattered like glass. The ‘triple cooked chips’ weren’t even once-cooked! The waitress offered to bring the dessert menu but when she hadn’t returned after 10 minutes we just left... No-one really asked if our meal was ok, but perhaps that’s because they didn’t want to hear our answer!

In summary: I would recommend The Wild Boar as a place to stay but really don’t come here to eat.

User

We have just visited for afternoon tea for my dads 60th and to say the least we were very disappointed! It definitely wasn’t worth the money the food was dry and the staff seemed rude! It’s such a shame because it’s such a nice little place but was definitely let down today!
