Wonderful meal last night. Perfectly cooked fillet steak. Staff were fun and friendly. Couldn’t have asked for more. Huge thanks to Ollie (who I called Holly all night!!) for being such a star and making our evening go so well. Hope that knee heals quickly!! X

User

We were greeted by Janet in the restaurant as usual, and after pre drinks in the Bar were escorted to our table.

There was a wide Menu range, and we chose Sea Bream as our main course, which was delicious.

As it was my birthday the presented my Desert Course with Happy Birthday written on the plate in chocolate.

Following this, because the weather was a nice sunny day we moved to an outside table to enjoy the sunshine and tranquil surroundings of the garden, and watching the ducks on the River Trent.

We did exactly the same last year, and the weather then was just as good.

Many thanks to the vary caring and attentive staff, and be assured we will repeat the experience very soon with another Lunch at the Winery.

User

Today we had an amazing processco afternoon tea for my friends baby shower. It was fantastic and the team could not do enough for us. So helpful and accommodating. Would completely recommend this venue for an event/celebration. Thank you again

User

Superb meal in a glorious setting - perfect steaks and even more perfect gin, mixed by Tom, who provided the most impeccable customer service I've ever experienced. The Winery is a stunning establishment, and Tom is an absolute treasure - thank you from us both.

User

Just got home from the most fantastic afternoon at The Winery. Sunday lunch for 22 of us was exceptional. The service was great and can't recommend this place highly enough!

User

I’ve never had a bad experience here...superb place.

Been dozens of times and always friendly staff, great food and good wine..and a good selection of beers.

Top choice when I’m taking my daughter and/or lady out for a good meal.

My favourite time is Christmas when they have some superb Christmas decorations and a geezer playing Christmas songs on a violin...a great way to celebrate the festive season whilst getting a little tiddly in a cultured way! 👍 😉

User

Celebrated my parents Ruby wedding last night, the staff looked after us very well, there was 33 of us and we were all nicely fed and supplied with drinks. The food was lovely, everyone was pleased and had a fabulous night. Thank you. Been here a few times and it’s always been lovely.

User

Celebrated mine, my best friends and my nans birthday at the winery today.. we couldn’t have asked for better service. The food and cocktails were delicious..

User

Visited The Winery last night for the 1st time, lovely venue with good accommodating service and the food is not overpriced. Everyone in our party agreed the starters and mains were all fantastic and full of flavour, I would have easily given it 5 stars but we were all underwhelmed by the puddings. Sure to be back again soon to hopefully give it 5 stars next time.

Wimbledon Prosecco Afternoon Tea

Staff were very welcoming and polite. One member of staff did state that they were unsure what level of service was required as they had not previously served afternoon tea.

We were offered a glass of prosecco but not tea or coffee so had to request this. The food was presented promptly.

Sandwiches were all produced on white bread that was a little dry as though they had been left uncovered for a while. As we prefer wholemeal it would have been nice to have been given a choice. Both types had soft 'wet' fillings. The inclusion of a savoury pastry item could be a future consideration as there was an excess of sweet options but only the sandwiches as savoury.

Cakes and sweet pastries were very nice but scones were inedible. The first scones presented were biscuit like, overcooked and very dry. After raising this with the waiter we were served with replacements along with an apology. These were slightly thicker but of the same consistency therefore, once again inedible.

When your manager (name?) asked if all was okay with our afternoon tea we did raise the sandwich and scone issues but praised other foods and the politeness of staff. In response, she was very apologetic and we were kindly offered an additional drink at no extra charge which we chose to enjoy in your lovely garden. You are to be congratulated on your perfect setting on what was a most beautiful summer's day.

There were also some technical issues with the Wimbledon screening but this did not affect our enjoyment as we are not fans of tennis.

It is appreciated that afternoon tea is a new venture for The Winery and therefore hope that our criticisms are accepted constructively, as intended. We we will most definitely continue to frequent your fine establishment, although perhaps not for your current afternoon tea menu!

User

I have visited here 5 times before so thought it was an ideal venue for a family meal who were visiting from Wales and Co Durham. The service was awful with long delays between courses. In fact only 7 mains turned up together leaving mine to be delivered some 10 minutes later. The fish was OK but no way we're the chips fresh. 2 of the other meals were fish so the explanation that mine took longer did not sit well. The manager did all he could by reducing the bill but the money was of no consequence. The whole family were disappointed. I will not return again and neither will other members of our family. No surprise to see you have slipped to 8th popular in Burton.

Went for dinner on Sunday. This was for my sister birthday. I have been for lunch a few times there and really enjoyed the food. The setting is amazing. This time however was not as good. The menu was on a piece of paper, giving roughly 5 options for starters, mains and desserts. I had my 2 children with me also. I chose the ham hock fritters with piccalilli to start. My sons ordered cheese on tomato skeweres. When they came, the ham hock was reasonable but tasted rather bland. My sons skewers looked like a concoction of a student. 4 or 5 pieces of cheddar separated by 4 chopped baby tomatoes on a skewer. The mains I had some form of chicken which sounded nice on the menu, I ordered a side of seasonal green vegetables as the main came with potato and salad. My sons ordered potato croquet pizza with sausage and cheese. My chicken was basically chicken goujons, with 3 small boiled potatoes, some salad leaves and a tomato sauce. The seasonal veg was the tiniest portion of peas and... peas ( mange tout) costing £3.50! My sons pizza were basically a hash brown with a chopped up sausage and melted cheese on top. For desert I ordered strawberry and vanilla ice cream for the kids. I ordered needwood chocolate and pistachio ice cream on a chocolate-honeycomb and meringue base. When it came it was just 2 small scoops of ice cream with some broken up meringue and broken up honeycomb biscuits. I was really disappointed. The staff were pleasant and helpful, but the menu and food were pub chain quality tarted up to mock high end dining.

User

This is a nice place with a good atmosphere, but the experience last night was very disappointing.

Went for my birthday and ordered pork belly to start and a fillet steak medium rare. Pork belly was great.

The steak arrived and was medium to well done, hardly even pink. I pointed this out to the waitress who immediately apologised and took it away. The replacement arrived about half an hour later, after the rest of my party had finished their main courses, which really was far too long. Before I even had to ask, the waitress said it would be taken off the bill, which was good. There had been a fire alarm in the interim which had shut gas off to the kitchen, but it had been at least 20 minutes between my first steak being taken away and that alarm, so it should have already been done.

Unfortunately this steak was exactly the same as the first, medium to well done. I pointed this out but ate the steak this time, as I could not wait for a third.

When the bill arrived, nothing had been taken off it. This was quickly resolved when I pointed it out, but still disappointing.

A steak should be the simplest thing for an experienced chef to cook correctly. Very disappointing. To do it incorrectly a second time after the first one being sent back is really poor.

Dreadful service, I have written a full review!

This was the second time in a week that I visited The Winery, first last Sunday, where again attention to detail was totally lacking! On arrival my husband got me a Bulldog gin & tonic (gin, aromatic tonic and pomegranate seeds), this was served without the pomegranate and when we asked why, you’d ran out, surely if you don’t have the correct ingredients you should advise before purchase! The starters came, goats cheese and pate, the pate had two very small pieces of toast to go with a large pot of pate and when we asked the young waitress came back with two chunks of white pre baked baguette, which we declined but a few minutes later she did return with some rather “uncooked” toast. The main meal was local pork loin stuffed with sage and onion, we did not get this, we were served a rather dry pork loin chop with no stuffing and no extra gravy as stated on the menu. I tried to find the restaurant manager but could not, very underwhelmed by this meal which was a £50 Xmas gift voucher!! On the second visit with the above party last night, the service was exactly as stated above....very disappointing, we spent £270 in a party of six and once again the lack of attention to detail was appalling! At other restaurants when purchasing a £70 bottle of champagne it is usually served by a wine waiter, but no we had to pour ourselves, your young waiting on staff had no clue about the menus and what should be served, drinks were missing and constantly had to be chased up. You have such a wonderful venue but are not giving a highly rated service, luckily the venue and company was great, but your lack of interest/detail leaves a lot to be desired, and after spending just a little under £300, not to ask your visitors if they’d had a good meal etc is exceptionally poor service!

What a nightmare. We drive an hour to come here as it looked lovely. Told to get a seat outside and waiter will come. 20 mins later nothing. So I order at the bar. 1 hour and 10 mins later. No food. To be told they didn’t send the order properly. Another 20 mins later starters arrive.

Then BEER BATTERED COD arrives. With no batter. I fetch someone and ask what’s happened. She says I’m so sorry he must have forgot it. REALLY!! It gets better. Then she comes out and says “sorry we’ve ran out of batter”. Can’t make it up can you.

As someone who owns a bar & restaurant - I’m still in shock. And left my UN-beer battered cod.

Guess we will just be drinking here in future.

Disaster

User

We’ve been so many times and never been disappointed however last night was awful all the portions were so small sharing portion of Camembert was the size of a rich tea biscuit the breaded cod wasn’t even breaded and no bigger than birds eye fish in sauce really won’t be going back and I doubt the other 9 that was went with will

User

Went for my friends birthday and left very disappointed. Smallest fillet steak I think I’ve ever been served. I asked for a large salad with it instead of chips and was served the tiniest side bowl. The guests sat around me actually all stared at my plate and asked ‘is that it’! I discreetly asked the waitress if that was how she would expect a fillet steak to be served. She went to check with the kitchen and came back with a ‘yes, that’s what you get’. I didn’t want to spoil the party so just chalked it up to experience. In general, the service was slow and inattentive although the staff in general were pleasant they just don’t seem happy! Maybe they all had the fillet steak and were left feeling sad!! Not a place I’d re-visit in a hurry! It has that air of thinking it’s better than it is.

User

Very disappointed with the service. Had pre booked and pre ordered and over an hour late getting seated and the wait for food was too long . Had to request service many times . Wouldn’t recommend going in a large party they couldn’t cope . The worst prawn cocktail ever . The prawns were so tiny and had to ask for butter for the bread . Everyone else had finished by the time the butter had arrived . Very poor
