Pickle Wars 18 The Charity Event of The Year Sunday 27th January 2019 12 noon onwards
... Get pickling for the best Pickled Onion competition ever!
Pickle Wars, now in it's 18th glorious year, is an event not to be missed and ranks up there with Cowes Week on the social calendar. From it's lowly beginings of just a couple of Sunday lunchtime drinkers trying to outdo each other with their onions to last years competition with over 50 entries, Pickle Wars has been an outstanding success and has had the honour of raising over £70,000 for The Children's Liver Disease Foundation.
The day itself is a family friendly fun day and kicks off at noon with everyone able to take part in the tasting. This is a highly sofisticated and technical part of the day that involves people trying onions and marking down the scores on a piece of paper!!
All the scores are collated to find out who the new Pickle King or Queen will be and with the prize for this hugely acclaimed accolade being a half of lager and your name being added to the Pickle Wars shield, tension is always high and rivalries are keenly fought out.
After the tasting, what can only be described as 'The Biggest Raffle in Gurnard' commences with normally over 60 raffle prizes ranging from Gift Vouchers and bottles of spirits to Brewery Trips and Beer fridges. Tickets for this fantastic raffle go on sale early January and are priced at just £1 per strip. BARGAIN!
After all the rafflle prizes are gone, the moment of the afternoon is handed over to the highly skilled auctioneer and his beautiful assistant, who will guide you effortlessly through the items available for purchase at often bargain basement prices. You could find yourself the proud owner of some Football Memorabilia or you could be about to embark on a Game Shooting Expedition or setting Sail on a Yacht during Cowes Week. There are always some cracking lots to be won and all safely in the knowledge that every penny of your money is going to charity.

Wonderful restaurant, delicious food, sweet and friendly owners. Our room was superb. We had a short, but amazing holiday. Thank you so much!

We were greeted with a very warm welcome and everyone at The Woodvale was so attentive and helpful throughout our stay. We stayed in a room with a double and twin which was perfect for traveling with my 7 year old daughter. We had a lovely view from our room and really enjoyed sitting outside watching the spectacular sunset. Breakfast was so much more than I was expecting – a freshly prepared Full English – all included in the price of the room. Would definitely stay here again if I'm lucky enough to return to the Isle of Wight. Thank you so much. A most memorable stay and experience.

We are staying just up the road for 2 nights so decided to pop in for a meal and a drink on our first evening. The staff are very pleasant, friendly and welcoming and the food was good, hot and tasty. We have booked for tomorrow evening too!

User

The support of Pickle Wars & the effort put in is amazing - given how busy it was the staff were all happy & somehow they even managed to serve food. A brilliant afternoon all round.

The food was superb,as normal! The rump steak and peppercorn sauce was delicious. Daughter's seafood taglitelle was cooked to perfection and the mussels were large and tasty. Wife had tortillas and chilli con carne which were equally enjoyable, washed down with ice cold cloudy cider , a large Chardonnay and a huge gin ... We'll be back!...Oh. And the sunset over the sea proves you're in a paradise location, must be my favourite pub on the island . Oh one last thing the live music on a Friday night is a winner. ( PS I'm not related to anyone at the pub ) Oh another bonus, the staff were extremely polite, cheerful and accommodating! Hats off to you!

User

Had a family meal with friends last evening. Good food and service topped off with Huxley’s Magic at our table. A fun close up magic show - brilliant!

User

Great service as always. After a little mix up with my booking the management went out of their way to fix the problem.

User

Excellent place with the best views on the island. Happy and helpful staff and tasty food

User

Excellent fish and chips and lovely sea views from outside seating area.

User

Been a couple of years since we came here, looks like it's had a make over . What a fabulous meal, homemade proper pie with a top and bottom, fish and chips and chili. Fabulous way to spend our last night of the weekend break to the island . We'll be back soon

User

Arrived early evening, without a reservation. The team could not have been more welcoming! Food was delicious, great ales for Mr B, perfect Gin for Mrs B.... Service was 1st rate.... ⭐️ Star of the show however was the homemade tartare sauce which must be amongst the finest thing I have ever tasted!!

User

Amazing food and service! Do not miss a visit here - you'll regret it! Wonderful menu, hard to choose, so we had to go back for more. When I next visit the Island, I will spend an evening eating here. Well done, guys.

Lovely view. Good food but, please, get the order right. I could not be bothered to go to the bar to argue but when did one scoop of white chocolate and raspberry and one scoop of chocolate become two scoops of white chocolate and raspberry. I watched the girl at the bar writing it down so I don't know who got it wrong.

User

Fantastic location overlooking the sea. Food was fine but would like to see some more exciting and healthy options on the menu.

Very good service with a smile from the gentleman who took our food order.

Would be good to remind some of the waiting staff how vital it is to look cheerful and enthusiastic.

User

... always welcoming, stunning view, fantastic food & live music superb... cannot wait to return...😁😁

There were four of us on a pre-booked lunch table. The service was good and staff pleasant, but I have to say I was disappointed with my turkey roast ~ (from the specials board) the roast potatoes were patently "Aunt Bessie's" or something similar, the bacon around the chipolata was almost raw, the vegetables had a odd greasy taste and were very sparse. The stuffing was cold and there was more dark turkey meat than light. I didn't feel it was worth the money, and certainly didn't deserve its place on the specials board. Incidentally my friends meals looked much better - I wish I'd had the pulled pork!
