Theatre Royal Margate

About Theatre Royal Margate

A gem of a theatre in the heart of Margate built in 1786, presenting an exciting programme of contemporary and traditional performance.

Theatre Royal Margate Description

The theatre dates from 1787 and was radically altered in 1874 by Jethro T.

Robinson (father-in-law of Frank Matcham, the famous and prolific theatre architect who along with his two protégés are responsible for more than building 200 theatres before 1915).

It is listed Grade II* and is sited within a conservation area.
The Theatre Royal, sited at the north east corner of Hawley Square, was part of the planned expansion of the small town and port of Margate during the mid Georgian period. It was built to vie as a facility for the entertainment of the upper classes with the Assembly Rooms, Cecil Square (1770s), and the Circulating Library, Hawley Square (1786), both now demolished.

The 1874 conversion marks the transition of the theatre from a Georgian boxed Playhouse into a Victorian Theatre. The stage was shortened and a second floor ‘gallery’ level added to the expanded auditorium.

As well as welcoming some of the greatest acting ‘stars’ of the Victorian era, the theatre was the site of the first drama school in the country, the School of Acting opened by Sarah Thorne in 1885, and attended by a young Edward Gordon Craig, who went on to become the undisputed father of modern theatre design and was arguably the most important theatre practitioner to come out of Britain since Shakespeare.

The Theatre Royal is operated by YOUR Leisure Kent Ltd

[#Theatre - #JulietandRomeo] Looping the Loop are bringing Lost Dog’s 'Juliet and Romeo: A Guide to Long Life and Happy Marriage' to #Margate on 25 April.
★★★★★ Pure pleasure. Smart, subversive and sexy – The Guardian ★★★★★ Superb. Devastating realism and dark humour – The Stage... ★★★★ Insightful, funny and rich. Smoulders with equal parts lust and loathing – Time Out
About: Lost Dog’s new show reveals the real story of Romeo and Juliet. It turns out they didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding, they grew up and lived happily ever after. Well they lived at least.
Now they are 40ish, at least one of them is in the grips of a mid-life crisis, they feel constantly mocked by their teenage selves and haunted by the pressures of being the poster couple for romantic love.
They have decided to confront their current struggles by putting on a performance – about themselves. Their therapist told them it was a terrible idea. With Lost Dog’s blend of dance, theatre and comedy this duet, directed by Olivier Award nominated Ben Duke, takes on our cultural obsession with youth and our inevitable issues with longevity.

[#Theatre - #NoMansLand]
Originally staged at the Old Vic, London in 1975, Peter Hall’s iconic production of No Man’s Land starred John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson. 'No Man's Land' by Harold Pinter is coming to #Margate on 1 November!
Tickets & info 👀👇👇👇... http://theatreroyalmargate.com/event/no-m ans-land/
About: A chance meeting between two elderly writers in a North London pub leads to an alcohol-fuelled night of reminiscences and verbal sparring.
Hirst, a wealthy recluse, invites Spooner, a down-at-heel poet, to his Hampstead townhouse for a nightcap. As the shadows lengthen and the whisky flows, their stories become more elaborate and improbable, until the arrival of two younger men forces events to take an unexpected turn.
In his most beguiling and atmospheric play, Pinter interweaves truth, language and memory to create a world of dark comedy and subtle power games.
Playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist, Harold Pinter was born on 10 October 1930 in East London. He wrote twenty-nine plays including The Caretaker, Old Times, Betrayal and The Homecoming. In 2005, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He died on Christmas Eve 2008.
