About Theatre Royal Margate
A gem of a theatre in the heart of Margate built in 1786, presenting an exciting programme of contemporary and traditional performance.
Theatre Royal Margate Description
The theatre dates from 1787 and was radically altered in 1874 by Jethro T.
Robinson (father-in-law of Frank Matcham, the famous and prolific theatre architect who along with his two protégés are responsible for more than building 200 theatres before 1915).
It is listed Grade II* and is sited within a conservation area.
The Theatre Royal, sited at the north east corner of Hawley Square, was part of the planned expansion of the small town and port of Margate during the mid Georgian period. It was built to vie as a facility for the entertainment of the upper classes with the Assembly Rooms, Cecil Square (1770s), and the Circulating Library, Hawley Square (1786), both now demolished.
The 1874 conversion marks the transition of the theatre from a Georgian boxed Playhouse into a Victorian Theatre. The stage was shortened and a second floor ‘gallery’ level added to the expanded auditorium.
As well as welcoming some of the greatest acting ‘stars’ of the Victorian era, the theatre was the site of the first drama school in the country, the School of Acting opened by Sarah Thorne in 1885, and attended by a young Edward Gordon Craig, who went on to become the undisputed father of modern theatre design and was arguably the most important theatre practitioner to come out of Britain since Shakespeare.

They have decided to confront their current struggles by putting on a performance – about themselves. Their therapist told them it was a terrible idea. With Lost Dog’s blend of dance, theatre and comedy this duet, directed by Olivier Award nominated Ben Duke, takes on our cultural obsession with youth and our inevitable issues with longevity.

'Elmer The Patchwork Elephant Show', features a menagerie of 21 loveable puppets, tells the tale of an elephant that stands out – both with his patchwork-coloured skin and his sense of humour – but ultimately realizing that his friends have always valued his unique characteristics. The show’s subtle message that it is always best to be yourself, combined with the vibrant colour and cheeky humour of the main character, makes Elmer a great show for children of all ages.

About:... Labelled is a devised piece of work created by the Inspiration Adult Groups from Inspiration Creative C.I.C. It’s a short story following 5 characters who feel the weight of the labels that they feel define them. This work is an exploration of how labels can affect us and will include acting, singing, signing, dance and movement. BSL is used throughout the performance.
The Inspiration groups are inclusive, bringing together people from all backgrounds, with and without disabilities and mental health difficulties, providing a platform to be expressive and collaborative.

Playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist, Harold Pinter was born on 10 October 1930 in East London. He wrote twenty-nine plays including The Caretaker, Old Times, Betrayal and The Homecoming. In 2005, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He died on Christmas Eve 2008.

Went to see the Panto this afternoon. Absolutely brilliant- they gave it 100% Had a really lovely time. Thank you Theatre Royal cast and crew.
Took my family to see Wicked Productions panto, Wizard of Oz. Fantastic!!!! Appealed to a range of ages from 5 to 67. Very funny. Highly recommend it.
Took my daughter to see wizard of Oz she was belly laughing all way threw. Great fun for the family. 💛
