Thorp Perrow Arboretum Wildlife Park Description

100 acres of beautiful woodland gardens and the UK's finest Bird of Prey & Wildlife center. Walks, trails and glades to explore. One of the finest collections of trees in the North of England. As well as the gardens founded by Sir Leonard Ropner, Thorp Perrow also includes Milbank Pinetum planted by Lady Augusta Milbank in the nineteenth century and the 16th century Spring Wood. Thorp Perrow is home to five National Plant Collections; Tilia (Lime), Fraxinus (Ash), Cotinus (Smoke Bush), Laburnum and Juglans (Walnut). Thorp Perrow also boasts 66 Champion trees in its collection.

Thorp Perrow is also home to a Bird of Prey and Mammal Centre. Situated in the old walled garden is a collection of birds of prey and mammals. With daily flying displays and tours lots for all the family to see and do!

Children can let off some steam in our woodland playground whilst parents can enjoy a nice cup of tea and some delicious cake from our tearoom.

Some of our eagle eyed visitors will have seen the beautiful memorial seat the Ropner family have laid at the bottom of the Cherry Avenue to celebrate the life of the late Sir John Ropner who worked tirelessly to turn the Arboretum into what you see today. The inscription reads ‘See the Generous Spirit of a Man who Planted Trees for Future Generations’ along with ‘Don’t waste time’ which runs along the bottom - two phrases which sum up this wonderful man who is greatly missed

“Forest Bathing” with curator, Faith. We had the pleasure to have been involved with this wonderful experience. Relaxing, thought provoking, enlightening and entertaining too. You’ve got to experience this, it is one for all age groups.

As a male, in my late 40’s, I was accompanying my partner and her friend. I had no idea what My partner was getting me involved in, and I had to look it up online, still not much wiser and, if I’m honest, just a little sceptical. The session was so well explained by Faith, and without pressure we were invited and encouraged to experience this mindful sensory adventure with nature. One word - “Wow”!

I left the session suprisied as to just how mentally de-stressed, and tension free, I actually felt. Totally enjoyable experience and one that everyone should have on their “to do” list.

Thank you so much Faith.

Went last sat to the grotto - kids (4&2) loved following the 12 days of xmas trail. Grotto itself was magical, lots to see and the elf bedroom was a particular highlight! Santa Claus spent ages talking to 4yr old and both kids were totally smitten. Loved every minute finished off with a beautiful cake in the tearoom. A fantastic festive day!

User

We love going here room for the kids to run around while we take in the beautiful scenery and the ever changing colours of the gardens ..... it also has a lovely park, kids enjoy feeding the animals and watching the birds of prey and can finish off with something from the lovely cafe .... we have annual tickets as we can just pop by for a couple of hours or spend most of the day

We called in after our wedding for photos. We were made very welcome and the staff made us feel very special. What a beautiful place.

User

Visited today with wife, son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. The total cost was just short of £50. I think I got my money’s worth all by myself. The colours walking around the arboretum and the lake were unbelievable. I don’t mind admitting I was moved to tears by the sheer beauty of it all.

Definitely worth a visit even if all you do is walk and look.

User

Visited a couple of weeks ago and had a great day with the little ones. Also when in the cafe I had to breastfeed my 6 week old and the waitress very kindly brought me a glass of water without even being asked. I was very touched by this kind gesture so thank you.

User

Took our 8 and 5 year old boys here for a picnic - we were blown away by the exquisite beauty of this place. We were there about four hours but could easily have spent longer. Lovely woodland to explore, but the birds of prey really made it. George, Mildred, Colin, Evo and their handlers were fantastic. We hope to be back in summer, autumn and winter!

User

Such a lovely place so peaceful and calm great for families too!

User

Myself my husband my daughter and our little French bulldog puppy have found our new happy place can’t believe we haven’t found it sooner seeing as it’s so close to us such a beautiful happy place will be back once maybe twice a week!

User

In my friend's own words "I've died and gone to heaven" thank you for an amazing day. The staff are second to none. Syinnong grounds which will stay in my friends memory for a very long time. I love it too every time I visit I find new things.

Have been visiting Thorpe Perrow for years now, since entry was via an 'honesty box' in fact and have watched it develop into a great place for a family day out. During early Autumn the changing colours of the trees and shrubs are a real treat, however there is always plenty of things to do and occupy your time throughout the whole year. The venue has childrens play area, a bird sanctuary with regular displays, a small farm style area with animals such as meerkats, goats, wallabies etc. There is ample seating around the extensive grounds as well as its own cafe and public toilets. Would highly recommend this venue to all who enjoy tranquil surroundings.

User

Had a great time today at the first Bird of Prey photo day. We were well looked after, the staff were very natural and worked with the group with was small in number. Highly recommend.

User

Had a fab day with hubby, daughter and granddaughters. We didn't arrive until lunchtime so will just have to come back as an afternoon simply wasn't enough time to explore your beautiful park. We made the most of the cafe where we had a nice lunch, the falconry show, the trail walk with the gorgeous wooden animals and the adventure playground which was great. We also feed the chickens, goats and wallabies. Well worth the entry fee, we can't wait to go back..

User

First visit on our first sunny spring day. My girls loved the Easter trail, exploring the park and feeding the animals. Just a gorgeous place. Can’t wait to visit again

User

Busy at weekends but still large enough to loose yourself amongst the trees and flowers !

User

Beautiful place, wonderful walks, rare trees, fabulous falconry displays, cute wallabies and meerkats, great tea shop & plant shop. Fun for all the family, what's not to love .

User

Amazing Santa experience, well done. It’s the little things that make it and you certainly made it a magical experience. My 6 year old and 2 year old loved it. A fantastic setting and a 15 minute walk through the woods just to build up the excitement

User

I thought it was nice to see the beautiful gardens but thought the birds of prey and mammals let it down. Half the cages were empty and all looked like they were in need of restoration. The duck pond was half empty of water and the sheep looked deshabilled. We did see a joey in the wallabies section which was a bonus. The cafe was nice and fresh and staff were friendly.

User

Shocking. Took the kids to the grotto today. For the price we paid for entry (£27.80 with military discount) I expected a much better experience. Even my 3 year old said it was nothing like he seen on the pictures on the website. The gifts! Well my one year old daughter got gifted a small packet of pound shop rubber ducks for the bath and the 3 year old got gifted a Thorp Perrow colouring book, with puzzles, cross words and word searches in. Not sure how many 3 year olds are capable of doing such puzzles but I've not met one yet. I have been to cheaper grottos in garden centres and had a better experience and better gifts.
