Tigertime - Save The Tiger Description

TigerTime is the global campaign to save the wild tiger. It is backed by the highly respected and much loved British wildlife artist and conservationist David Shepherd CBE and was launched by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation on his 80th birthday in April 2011.

The tiger has now lost over 90% of its original range and today there are fewer than 3000 left in the wild. Within a few years, the numbers will fall so low that they will pass the ‘point of no return’ and become extinct. TigerTime is fighting to stop this.

Donations for TigerTime goes to David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation tiger projects in India, Thailand and the Russian Far East including anti-poaching patrols, undercover investigations, educational programmes and monitoring activities.

TigerTime has a growing supporter base with over 600, 000 supporters (and growing! ). This includes an increasing celebrity support including Stephen Fry, Ricky Gervais, Joanna Lumley OBE and Samantha Fox. We are currently promoting their petition www. bantigertrade.com which strives to end all trade in all tiger parts from any source worldwide. Please help TigerTime save wild tigers by signing www. bantigertrade.com and spread the word!

Much like the rough tongue of the domestic cat, a tiger’s tongue has a coarse, sandpaper-like texture with many sharp barbs. This helps the tiger to groom itself and lick the fur off of its prey. 🐅

Today we offer our condolences to our conservation colleagues at wild cat charity Panthera, following the loss of their founder Dr Alan Rabinowitz. Described as the ‘Indiana Jones of wildlife protection’, Alan will be remembered as one of the world’s most passionate and knowledgeable big cat scientists and conservationists. Our thoughts are with all our friends at Panthera and Alan’s family at this sad time.

Today we celebrate #InternationalTigerDay! Sadly just 3,500 of these magnificent big cats are left in the wild. David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation's #TigerTime campaign is working to protect them - you can help by 'adopting' a tiger from just £32! https://davidshepherd.org/help-us/adopt/A mur-Tiger-Ussuri

“There may be more captive tigers in the US than wild ones.”
Following a recent article by the BBC (2018), an estimated 7,000 tigers are living in zoos or privately owned in America. Compared to as few as 3,500 living in the wild, this is an astonishing statistic!
Kept as exotic pets, tigers are confined to small fenced areas, a vast contrast to their natural territories which can be 20 square miles or more. This can have severe physical and psychological impacts to their we...llbeing.
A makeshift set of regulations govern the keeping of captive tigers in the US, and there is no information held about their populations, when they are born or what happens to their body parts (valuable commodities within illegal markets) when they die - Guardian (2018).
With the illegal trade of tigers and their parts remaining the primary threat to wild tiger populations, the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation believes in the closure of all breeding farms and captive facilities which pose a real threat to wild tigers, feeding demand for their parts and derivatives.
In the last 100 years, wild tigers have lost 93% of their historic range are currently on a direct path towards extinction. Through TigerTime (a campaign of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation) we are working to help conserve these magnificent creatures and protect a future for tigers in the wild.

As the largest of big cats, Tigers have the second strongest bite of all carnivore land mammals - topped only by the polar bear! Relative to their size however (a jaguar is about half the size of a tiger), jaguars have the greatest bite force of the cat family. Strong jaws and powerful teeth help a tiger to hunt and eat their prey. 🐅

This photo of a tiger family was taken by Michael Vickers www.tigersintheforest.co.uk in 2004. Since it was taken, three of the tigers have been poached with the fourth dying more recently under suspicious circumstances.
David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation's Tiger Time campaign is working to protect tigers and stop this ongoing slaughter. You can find out more and help support these projects by donating via the link in our Bio. Thank you for caring and helping to save the tiger 🐅

#Tiger’s eyes have round pupils, unlike the distinctive vertical-slit pupils of domestic cats. Vertical-slit pupils are most common in predators who hunt by ambush at night. Tigers however hunt primarily in the morning and evening. 🐅

This signed print by artist Mark Roach is up for auction to raise money for #TigerTime. It's the culmination of a month of fundraising by Anthony Bellamy and friends, who've held a sponsored 'six towns' walk, a pub quiz and a raffle to help save the #tiger! Please support them if you can!🎨🐅

As well as bathing and playing in water, tigers are also surprisingly strong swimmers, with adults known to cross rivers several kilometres or more wide and swim many kilometres in a day! 🐅

The hind legs of a tiger are extremely strong and longer than their front legs. This enables a fully grown tiger to leap over eight metres and jump up to five metres vertically. The bones in a tiger’s feet are tightly connected by ligaments allowing them to buffer the impact of landing from such heights 🐅

Male tigers typically have larger territories than females. This allows their territory to overlap with females for greater opportunity to mate. To mark these territories, tigers scratch and leave their scent on trees. 🐅

#Tigers are primarily solitary creatures and are usually fiercely territorial. Territory size depends on many factors like prey numbers and neighbouring tiger territories, but a male tiger will usually hold a larger territory than a female, allowing him to mate with more females and father more offspring. It is widely considered that the white spots on the back of a #tiger’s ears act as communication signals – they are thought to deter attack, acting as a ‘false eye’, which could serve to discourage other predators from attacking them from behind, and also to help communicate with other tigers, especially providing a ‘follow me’ signal for a mother to her cubs.. #tigertime #savethetiger www.tigertime.info

User

To compensate for the energy they use roaming and hunting fast-pace prey, #tigers spend a long time sleeping or resting. They can sleep for up to 20 hours a day 🐅💤💤💤 #tigertime #savethetiger www.tigertime.info

User

Thank you very much for the magnificent work you are doing in protecting one of the most beautiful and vulnerable animals on the planet, TIGERS. They are in danger of extinction as well as elephants, rhinos, lions, jaguars, cheetahs, leopards and so many beautiful animals hunted by poachers who should really faced the death for killing innocent TIGERS in the wild and all kinds of animals <3 I love TIGERS and I love all kind of animals in the wild that need our protection. Lets Save the Tigers NOW <3

User

Thank you for bringing these statistics to attention; these animals are vital for the survival of the planet, we need them as they need humans; however humans are their downfall, I dream that a total ban on all animal parts and furs will be made as law. Keep working as hard as you are, hopefully they are not beyond saving.
