The Boat Safety Examiner with over 48 years experience in the Norfolk marine industry.

The BSS was jointly established in 1997 by the Environment Agency and British Waterways to promote safety on the inland waterways in respect of boats, their installations and components. Meeting these safety Standards in order to obtain a navigation licence became a requirement at the same time. To date, some 45, 000 powered craft have successfully met these requirements.

My aim is to continue assisting boat owners to comply to Boat Safety Scheme standards and in that process help to reduce the risk of accident and injury on the Norfolk Broads. I have also served 26 years in the Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service as a retained fire fighter and since 2000 have been Watch Manager at Wroxham Fire Station. This alone encourages me to be proactive in the reduction of accidents, fires and explosions and promote a safer environment on the waterways of Norfolk and Suffolk. I am also a time served boat builder, completing my five year apprenticeship in 1975 when GRP boats were first introduced to the Norfolk hire fleets. Since that time I have been independent, working on a number of boatyards and for individual private owners around the Broads, repairing their own boats or building new to the owners specific requirements.

My experience is wide and far ranging, from repairs to the 100 year old wherry yachts, Hathor, Olive and Norada to the most modern plugs being made for one of the field leaders in luxury ocean-going cruisers and sports cruisers.

Working closely with boatyards, marine engineers and boatbuilders, my aim is to help you achieve the standards required, with as little fuss as possible.
