About Toby Carvery

Here at Toby Carvery Caversham Bridge, we believe there's only one way to do our beloved British roast – and that's properly.

Toby Carvery Description

When it comes to roast dinners, we really know our stuff. Every day our chefs lay on a feast of tender, hand-carved meats with all the trimmings – including towering Yorkshire puds, golden roasties with all those lovely little crunchy bits, and plenty of freshly prepared veg, all crowned with proper gravy. So it's no wonder we're Reading's favourite carvery restaurant.

User

Great food and service, no better place to get a good value roast dinner

User

Definitely worth the drive from Oxford

The food was outstanding , the price brilliant the staff so friendly and helpful even though the staff were all run off there feet we were made to feel welcome , the man slicing the meat also took his time to help my 6 yr old son choose what he wanted which was a god send being he finds big crowds very difficult, as a family wr enjoyed every minute of toby carvery and the bonus being all my kiddies loved it and can't wait to go back Christmas day

User

Came in at 10.56am breakfast was still hot and looked and tasted nice!

User

All ways great service every meal is great and customer services is aways served us well too this place always is a great place too go and the value is cheap compared to other places well done Toby

User

The food was amazing I loved it, but the lady serving us must have forgot we were there, we were sat for half an hour after pudding trying to get the bill the 4 stars are coz no fault at all with the food xx

User

Yes we Visited the Toby after a Late Hospital appointment feeling very Hungry.

Its a shame The flies were all over the meat!

as Business Was slow at that time of Day! when we were there all the veggies were Covered but not the meat the serving counter was Untended! so giving the big flies Free range and the pick of the lot!

The meat was crumbling into Tiny Bits when they were serving Meaning very dry obviously under the heat light way too long!

the Staff were all very polite and I had occasion to chat with the Manager re the flies which he explained why they were not able to cover the meats up! still not Good ENOUGH! OK had a nice Ice cream to finish But will never Visit again in any sort of Hot weather with the Service being untended Come on at the end of the Day they could have been at the Service shooing them away with a tea towel Or some thing? But No! I actually did stand the 3 to 4 mins waiting to be served I had to ask some one on the Bar to get some one to Serve me and they then eventually Came Not ever seen this at a carvery Before OH Dear!!!!

User

Very disappointing that the last two times I’ve been the food has been lukewarm or almost cold. Also upon getting your food back to the table, as if it wasn’t already cold the air con will quickly ensure that it is. It would also be better if the gravy was piping hot but that’s lukewarm too. Plates were cold when meat was handed to us.

User

There was nobody around to book us in for 10 minutes ( we had made reservations). Ordered drinks.... 2 beers and 2 bottomless soft drinks - bottomless drink machine not working so we got 2 free cokes and then had to pay £2.75 for any extra soft drinks required... Disappointed

User

The saving grace wad the food was good.

Service was awful... took 7 minutes to be seen at the bar as there didnt seem to be a worker in sight! The lady that eventually served us seemed unable to work the till so had to call a guy down from upstairs to help. Same lady was later spotted eating a bowl of something behind the bar! Is this good practice?? Will not return!

User

Sat in Toby's writing this. Booked our table for 1630. Turned up, qued up for food only to be told they had no turkey and roast beef left. It was still cooking and would be another 40 mins. We spoke to the manager who had only just found out himself......really. The manager was unaware of this issue. Severe lack of communication between staff and manager. Due to our eating habits we were unable to eat the meat selection on offer and opted to wait. We were offered to eat for free if we took what was on offer but when you can't eat that and came to the carvery for a particular meat. Very poor management of what a professional kitchen is supposed to produce. I must say though. The front house staff were very apologetic and friendly and when we did eat it was, as always, delicious.

User

I walked in and was ignored despite being a fair few staff around. It was 8pm on a Friday evening and wasn't very busy.

I stood where the sign said wait to be seated and waited.. and waited. I can understand how I can be overlooked being 6 foot tall in bare feet and built like a blonde Russian shotputter.

A middle aged lady (who I firmly believe thinks she is not ) behind the bar saw me, came from behind the bar once she'd finished her chat with another two staff members and walked off in another direction. I figured maybe she had gone to see if she could squeeze me in anywhere in the nearly empty restaurant.

She went over to an empty table and straightened the menus, despite the table not even being set and then wandered back my way.

At this point the power in my invisibility cloak clearly failed and she saw my petite massive frame with friendly snarling face.

After a blank look at me she said in a perplexed voice " are you looking for a table ?"

Many replies here ... none of them a simple yes. However I have heard sarcasm is the lowest form of wit and as she was clearly a half-wit I realised I was out of my league.

She then turned to a single table with one chair right by the front doors and gestured to it. I'm not sure if she wanted me to dance on it or to wipe it first but as I wasn't in the mood for either I asked if perhaps I could have one further away from Hurricane Katrina trying to get through the doors.

She waved vaguely towards the rest of the tables and said any of those. Gracious in defeat. I like that in a woman.

Like a fatter, more jaded version of Goldilocks o approached the first table - ooh too dirty, the next ooh too sticky, the third too much debris on the floor to get to it.. and so on.

I gingerly sat down (I always sit down like that due to piles. Can't blame the Toby for that) and waited. Okay I didn't need a menu as the name Carvery holds a big clue but I figured someone would come to ask if wanted a drink or to go large or just to re-enact Falling Down but No, the staff clearly felt a table was all I needed. Cutlery is over rated anyway.

So I checked myself in knowing FB would ask me to write a review, and I left.

Toby this could hsve been beautiful... but it never even came close.

I expect more from this brand. Maybe I'm spoilt by my locsl Toby where the staff manage to greet people, wipe tables and serve food without much fuss.

Maybe.

Boxing Day family get together, eleven of us.

The starter was nice, service good with a chatty smiling waitress. We all went for the carvery main. Can you believe the menu (in small print) stated £2 extra for pigs in blankets .really?

The pudding menu was nothing special to be honest.

Now tea and coffee were free with the menu but when we got the bill, sorry third bill as others were for different tables and mixed up, we were charged for them. I challenged this and asked to see a manager. He proceeded to say that this was a till error and the system was not taking the cost of tea and coffee from the final bill.

What if I had paid and not checked my bill I asked the reply was "we would have refunded the tea and coffee". But what if I had not seen them on my bill I asked. " this is a busy restaurant and this must be expected".

How many customers were charged for free tea and coffee on Boxing Day and how is the Toby Carvery going to repay them. Just a thought.

A great selection of vegetables at a great selection of temperature's from cold to warm. The ability of the meat carver to carve meat that thin is amazing. Bread sauce courtesy of Polycell. It was cheap and not cheerfully. Back to Whetherspoons I think.

User

Would have been nice if it hadn’t been barely warm. If a Carvery is open all day at least keep the food nice and hot. This is the second time I’ve dined here after 2 pm and the food had been almost cold! Won’t be visiting again.

User

Went there yesterday for a meal just to say how disappointed I was the beef was grizzly and was very Tasteless will not be back in a hurry and I am a chef myself so all I can say is how disappointed was even the veg was not at its best

User

Went for ‘all you can eat’ breakfast before a 4hour Drive. There was hardly any food to choose from and what was there was disgusting! Ended up eating just the beans and left everything else! Couldn’t even drink my coffee it was foul. The staff were rude and clearly had no customer service skills. Total waste of money, wanted to complain at the time but trying to stop someone to talk to was impossible, they had no interest! If I’m ever visiting the area again I’ll be use to avoid this place!

User

Very disappointed with today's Father Christmas Breakfast Experience. When we arrived not only was he behind the bar but his beard was under his chin. My 5yr old was confused and mortified all in one!!

I also booked a table of 9 knowing it would be busy. We struggled to get a table big enough and the lady behind the bar was less than friendly! I then was left to pull tables together!

The advert said open a present from Father Christmas whilst you enjoy a family breakfast. This would suggest he visited you at the table. Instead it was a half hearted attempt at a chair and tree in an alcove. Another family were even there eating opposite. Hardly a magical experience for my little ones first visit.

Utterly gutted regarding the whole experience and the lack of Christmas magic/atmosphere for kids even at £5per child.

User

Just had what is an average carvery neither good nor bad. My main complaint is the blonde middle aged woman running around like a jumped up mini hitler, heard her say loudly to a member of staff , have table 10 paid?!?! she then came over to ''check is everything alright'' ( she was seeing what we had . We were table 10!!! Now when we arrived we were shown a table and we ordered with the waiter, 2 carveries and 2 soft drinks, got our food then went over to get the drinks which you pour yourself...I finished my meal paid my bill and left , we normally have dessert but im not hanging around with customer service so bad and will never ever return again
