About Toby Perkins Mp

Member of Parliament for Chesterfield and Staveley and Shadow Minister for Apprenticeships and Lifelong Learning.

Toby Perkins Mp Description

Toby Perkins became MP for Chesterfield in the General Election of 2010, overturning a Liberal Democrat majority to take back the seat for Labour.

Toby defeated Chesterfield's sitting Liberal Democrat MP, Paul Holmes, seeing him overturn a majority of 3, 000 to win by 549 votes despite a national swing against the Labour Party.

Following Toby's election to Parliament in 2010, he asked a question in David Cameron's first post-election Prime Minister's Questions in the 2010 session. Toby was named by the Financial Times as one of the best six newcomers of the first 100 days of the 2010 parliament.

Under Ed Miliband, Toby became the first of the 2010 intake of new members to speak from the front bench when becoming a Shadow Education Minister in September 2010 under Andy Burnham. He was moved into the Shadow Business team as Shadow Minister for Enterprise and Small Business in 2011, under Chuka Umunna. As Shadow Business Minister Toby was responsible for Labour's policies on Access to Finance, Small Businesses, Regulation / de-regulation, Insolvency, Procurement, Pubs and the High Street. Toby was elected to the Communities and Local Government Select Committee.

Douglas Alexander appointed him one of three Labour Party Deputy Chairs in July 2014 for the 2015 General Election campaign alongside Gloria De Piero and Jonathan Ashworth. Toby had previously run Labour's by election campaign in Wythenshawe and Sale East. He also worked on by election campaigns in Corby, Bradford West and Eastleigh.

In parliament Toby has led Opposition Day debates for Labour on pub company regulation, Sunday trading laws for the Olympics, on the Deregulation Bill alongside Chi Onwurah. Toby has secured adjournment debates against Derbyshire Fire Station closures, that led to a u-turn on plans to close 18 Derbyshire fire stations, and against the sale of legal highs.

Toby was Shadow Minister for the Armed Forces in the Shadow Cabinet of Jeremy Corbyn. Toby is the current chair of the All Party Parliamentary Pub Group and the Labour Friends of the Forces.

This afternon I visited Poolsbrook Primary Academy where an open day was being held to help local residents access a range of services. Always a pleasure to work with our Mayor, Gordon Simmonds.

I also met fairandfunkyfunky who work with schools to put used plastics to artistic use.

It was also a great pleasure to meet this year’s children of #Chernobyl at the Cooperative event this morning, who visit #Chesterfield every year as part of excellent Chesterfield Children’s lifeline Charity.

I’m at Central England Co-operative's Celebrate Co-operation event at Chesterfield FC, hearing about steps Co-Op take to reduce plastic pollution.

Tory MPs roaring ‘More’ at the PM they’ve repeatedly put a knife 🔪 in the back of, tells you all you need to know about the duplicity of Tory MPs. #PMQs

Following concerns raised by staff and parents at Hasland Hall Community School, and the recent strike action, I have booked a room in the Hasland Methodist Church for a series of confidential meetings with anyone that would like to discuss their recent experiences of Hasland Hall School. If any parents, staff or governors would like to speak to me, they should call my office on 01246 386 286 to arrange an appointment.
The special appointment-based surgery will be at Hasland ...Methodist Church on Friday 19th July from 11am to 2pm. If you are unable to make it on Friday, I will be arranging further appointments at a later date.

Spoke at the latest Unite the Union protest at Ashgate Rd offices of DXC Technology where as many as 270 staff may be under threat of redundancy.

Great to do Q&A with these bright buttons from Hollingwood Primary School The visit was arranged after Y3s,4s &5s wrote to me about their priorities for the environment.
I reckon some will become Chesterfield Borough Council Climate youth ambassadors.

My speech in support of workers at another protest against the planned redundancies at DXC Technology.
I am very concerned about the loss of these highly-skilled jobs in Chesterfield and the potential impact on the public contracts DXC has with organisations such as the NHS, Metropolitan Police, Passport Office and the DWP.

I challenged the Government today regarding Legal Aid rules that mean many people fleeing domestic violence and living in a refuge are not eligible for funding as the refuge is deemed to be their second home.

User

I can confirm that I have informed The Labour Party that I wish to continue to be the Labour Party candidate for #Chesterfield at the next election. Representing my town and my party has been a huge honour & I'll continue to do it to the best of my ability as long as voters want me to.

I have written to the Secretary of State for Transport to support Staveley by pass proposal that is one of Midlands Conect's Transport priorities. I will also be backing plans for A61 improvements to traffic flow.
