"A new species of hummingbird has been spotted and identified in Ecuador by a multinational team of ornithologists. The bird has been named Oreotrochilus cyanolaemus, or Blue-throated Hillstar, for its deep blue neck and is about 11cm long. Ecuador, which is rich in biodiversity, is home to 132 hummingbird species out of the more than 300 in the world. Ornithologists say there are only about 300 blue-throated hillstars and that the species is in danger of extinction."

"These whales and dolphins just prove to us that it is more than possible for two different species to cross paths and have nothing but respect and love for each other"

"Singapore Airlines said on Friday it had stopped accepting lion bones for cargo after the carrier was singled out in a report for transporting the animal parts from South Africa.
Campaigners have long called for a ban on the controversial trade in big cat bones, which are sought after for medicine and jewellery in Southeast Asia"

A BIG THANK YOU to Jane Daniell, who has just finished her 2 weeks placement in Brazil, running art workshops and bringing loads of contribution to the local teachers in public schools in Florian├│polis. Jane's work has broaden the students' horizons, showing that everyone has a talent and it is possible to make it a profession. She also proved that doing art is as important as any other subject taught in school and it can be used as an important tool in the learning process. We will miss you, Jane, and will be looking forward to see you again. Volunteer name: Oksana Kocuriene Which country was your project in? South Africa Which project did you do? Lion Rescue and Rehabilitation in a Game Reserve Sanctuary What was your most memorable moment on the programme? Everything was fantastic! I think that meeting Anthony, Emma and their kids was one of the most memorable moments. These people are heroes! They are doing fantastic job saving lions in a country where everything is based on canned and trophy hunting business.... The lions are safe with Anthony and his family. The family lives in full harmony with nature and animals and it is a dream life for many people! They are lovely people!
What do you think was your biggest achievement on the programme? I guess that I managed to understand many things that are going on in SA. Things are very complicated in this country. I am glad to know that such people as Anthony live there and try to change many things to the best. He is a warrior of light and I hope that he would manage to bring his light to many people around. My biggest achievement is that now I am capable of bringing awareness of atrocities of canned hunting industry in SA. I speak about Anthony and his family and what they are trying to do to stop this horrible hunting business. I keep talking to everyone I know about it as many people in Europe have no idea about such a problem. Breeding lions in captivity is essentially wrong. As I am a tourist agent myself, now I definitely understand what cost all these lions would have to pay if agencies advertise such tours as walks or interaction with lions. All these lions will end up with the bullet in their head! I immediately alerted my agency to stop selling such tours. Volunteers must be also alerted and make sure that they come to the place where lions are definitely safe and will spend a decent and honourable life.
What was the biggest positive impact your volunteering made to the project? I adopted one lion¤śŖ! I also hope that I can find more people to adopt lions that Anthony rescued. That could be of a great help to Anthony to support the project!
