About Tuckers Seeds

Tuckers Seeds

Tuckers Seeds Description

Tuckers seeds are part of Edwin Tucker & Sons Ltd, who were founded in 1831. It was in 1862 that Edwin Tucker, a keen farmer, purchased the Seed, Malting and Agricultural business of Mr. William Rolestone Whiteway of Ashburton, who hade been trading since 1831. He was keen to be involved in the seed business as he felt there was considerable room for improvement within the trade, his legacy for supplying quality seeds to West Country farmers still remains the company’s phi. . . losophy to this day. Even though history shows there were many Malthouses in Devon at the time (many pubs had there own attached) the Maltings side of the business also fitted in well with Edwin Tucker’s vision as he was able to reciprocal trade with his farmer customers by buying back their barley. Edwin Tucker was later joined by his three sons and together they continued to expand all sides of the business. In 1876 they moved from their rented site in East Street to a new purpose built maltings in Station Yard, Ashburton.

Tiny cucumber or cute watermelon look-a-like? We can't decide here but do agree that a Cucamelon wouldn't look out of place speared with a toothpick and popped into a Martini :) Another exclusive to our website, Cucamelon produces grape sized fruits which taste like cucumber, with a hint of lime! http://www.tuckers-countrystores.com/pk-c ucumber-cucamelon/

Many thanks to Dr Loening for sending in these excellent pictures of Patriot Cauliflower. Dr Loening said: "Seed was sown in East Lothian, Scotland, outside in mid-May 2014 and seedlings planted out end of June to early July. The crop was at its best after other varieties of winter hardy cauliflowers, end of May into June. These are three out of a row of 8." These photos have gone into our September photo competition, with the winner being drawn at the end of the month. If you have any produce grown from Tuckers Seeds - send in your pictures of them for your chance to win!!

Tim at Westbank Friends has sent in some great photos of produce grown from end of season seed that we recently donated. He says: "These seeds proved an enormous help to us. Staff members took some and propagated them for us and returned the seedlings; young people from Ellen Tinkham Special School, Exeter and Oakwood Court, Dawlish (a college for students with learning and behavioural difficulties) have helped in the general maintenance and development of the allotment; children from the after school club developed their own key-hole garden. And all with the seeds provided by Tuckers. Thank you for that."
