The Government’s own data shows that child poverty in the UK has been rising steadily in recent years. This just isn’t right. Policymakers can no longer deny the depth of the problem or abandon entire areas to rising poverty. The Government must respond with a credible child poverty-reduction strategy. #EndChildPoverty

A leading United Nations poverty expert has compared Conservative welfare policies to the creation of 19th-century workhouses and warned that unless austerity is ended, the UK’s poorest people face lives that are “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short”.

Human Rights Watch has accused the UK government of breaching its international duty to keep people from hunger by pursuing “cruel and harmful polices” with no regard for the impact on children living in poverty.

This week is Mental Health Week, a yearly event hosted by the Mental Health Foundation to raise awareness of mental health issues, the effects they can have on people's lives and what help is available. Turn2us has long recognised the relationship between mental health and money. We want to see a much better understanding of this across the UK.

You might have heard people talking about the Severe Disability Premium (SDP) over the past few months. Perhaps you have heard about people getting big back-payments, or you might have seen information in the news about the problems with SDP and Universal Credit. But what is the severe disability premium and what does it mean for you?

It is outrageous that in some constituencies it is more normal for children to be in poverty than not! We know what causes poverty and we know how to fix it!
Find out how many children are in poverty in your area and let your MP know: http://www.endchildpoverty.org.uk/poverty -in-your-area-2019/

Turn2us has repeatedly told the DWP that sanctions cause poverty, homelessness, hunger, destitution and debt. We welcome the news that the time limit on benefit sanctions will be cut. However, we urge the DWP to remove all punitive measures.

Council Tax discounts don’t depend on your income or savings (it is a different scheme to 'Council Tax Support'). Council Tax discounts depend on who lives in your home and how many of you there are, for example, these groups can get a discount:
- single people - people with disabilities - carers... - students

We welcome the announcement made just minutes ago. However we still ask the DWP to remove all punitive measures and focus on making work pay a decent real wage #fightingukpoverty

The five-week wait for a first universal credit payment is a major cause of people needing donated food. Another is the benefit freeze, which has pegged the value of most working-age benefits well behind the rising cost of food and rent for more than three years. “Benefits are simply not enough to live on.”
