Tusk Description

PROTECTING WILDLIFE

Through the support of Tusk and its partner organisations across Africa, greater protection has been afforded to some 36 endangered species over a combined land mass equivalent to 10 times the size of Belgium. Some of the threatened species that have benefited include the African elephant, black and white rhino, cheetah, chimpanzee, mountain and lowland gorilla, African wild dog, Grevy’s zebra, giant sable and hawksbill turtle.

In keeping with Tusk’s overall philosophy these projects are often not solely focused on wildlife, instead they take an integrated approach to conservation working hand in hand with local communities and combining the protection of wildlife with the management and sustainable use of natural resources.

SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES

Tusk’s approach to conservation recognises that the long term future for wildlife and Africa’s other natural resources is dependant on sustainable rural development. In conjunction with its partners in the field, Tusk has been at the forefront of establishing and promoting community-led initiatives which link the implementation of greater security, healthcare and employment through responsible tourism and other nature-based enterprises with conservation. One such programme supported by Tusk has already seen over two million acres of community land come under a common conservation policy with an initiative which is mutually benefiting 75, 000 people of diverse ethnicity and affording greater protection for a significant wildlife population.

The aim is to reduce human wildlife conflict and to allow people to view their natural heritage as a real asset. Projects supported by the charity directly employ 1, 370 people and benefit over half a million others.

PROMOTING EDUCATION

Tusk believes that if conservation is to succeed and environmental degradation to be reversed, education needs to be promoted at an early age.

Tusk’s Pan African Conservation Education (PACE) Project has been designed to help address this need by communicating ideas on environmental issues, whether in the form of practical advice or demonstrating proven solutions between communities across Africa. The highly acclaimed set of teaching materials and films has been designed to act as both an environmental education tool and a stimulus to adopt sound and sustainable policies. To date, over 150, 000 children and students across the continent have been exposed to Tusk’sPACE programme.

Furthermore Tusk provides much needed financial support to help build and improve facilities for rural schools, and other education centres across Africa. Over 72, 000 students attend schools and education centres supported by Tusk.

Adam Dant is a contemporary artist known for his visual narratives realised through elaborate and intricate pen-and-ink drawings. Adam has kindly painted a rhino sculpture as part of the #TuskRhinoTrail
Adam says of his artwork: “I have recreated a rhino according one of the first depictions of the beast, being Albrecht Durer’s 1515 woodcut print. Durer based his image on a written description and until the late 18th century his print was considered to be an accurate depict...ion of a rhino. I think it is poignant to display the animal in such form, according to how it was first depicted by an artist as a rarity, due to our lack of knowledge of and encounters with the rhino, as opposed to it being depicted as a rarity because we’ve killed them all.”

David Mach is a Scottish artist best known for his dynamic and imaginative large-scale collages, sculptures and installations using diverse media including coat hangers, matches, magazines and car tyres.
David says of his rhino design: “Dia de Muertos. That’s the traditional way to say it. It’s become Dia de los Muertos and that’s now tied in to All Saints and Souls Day…we celebrate the dead on this day, we remember. I guess my message is…if we don’t look after our rhinos, if... we don’t protect them, stop people killing them for their tusks then that’s what we can look forward to - a Remembrance Day for them - a Remembrance Day for all the other animals we’re not looking after - a Remembrance Day for all the things were not looking after, not protecting, not keeping safe and you can call it All Saints or All Souls’ Day too as much as you like…but that won’t say much for our souls.”
You can see David’s sculpture at St Paul’s / Paternoster Row as part of the #tuskrhinotrail

Mkomazi, on #Tanzania’s northern border and contiguous with Kenya’s Tsavo National Park, was established as a game reserve in 1951. By the late 1980s it had succumbed to uncontrolled grazing and poaching, with the elephant population reduced from 4,500 to just 11. In 1989 the national government gave Tony Fitzjohn the mandate to manage the area and restore the natural ecosystem and wildlife. The elephant population has now reached 500, and breeding programmes for black rhino ...and African wild dog have returned these animals to Mkomazi (redesignated in 2008 as a National Park).
Tusk has been a major sponsor of Mkomazi for many years. Field operation support has contributed to game guard salaries, aircraft patrols, vehicles, machinery, fencing, and workshop equipment. We provided funds for the environmental education centre and the schools bus. In 2012 we were instrumental in the transfer of three black rhino from Port Lympne Wildlife Park in the UK to Mkomazi, and we have also covered costs for wild dog translocations.

What is the main difference between a white rhino and a black rhino?
The black rhino has a hooked lip which allows it to feed on trees and shrubs. The white rhino has a long, flat upper lip perfect for grazing on grasses.

Northeast Namibia is home to the largest free-ranging black rhino population in the world.
These specially desert-adapted animals are spread across more 25000 ha of arid land, most of it unfenced and with no protected area status. Save the Rhino Trust (SRT) has monitored this population, recording important information about the rhinos’ ecology and behavior. For much of this time the population has increased, but in recent years the global surge in rhino poaching has hit this... region and these animals have needed more than just monitoring. Tusk’s original support was directed to the monitoring teams, in particular the camel unit, helping the game guards to monitor rhino across the vast areas that cannot be reached by vehicle. In recent years Tusk’s focus has moved to the anti-poaching work providing support for the operational costs.
This critical black rhino population, which had been steadily recovering since the 1980s, is now facing a renewed threat from poaching. We must continue supporting the vital work of SRT to keep these precious animals safe.

Happy #WorldLionDay
It is estimated there are about 20,000 lions remaining in the wild today.
Lions are still present in a number of large and well-managed protected areas across Africa, and their ongoing protection is vital for lion survival, especially if their habitat can be linked by wildlife corridors. As well as protecting some of their greatest strongholds in Tanzania and Zimbabwe, Tusk invests in a number of initiatives working with local communities to change attitu...des towards lions and to help them protect their livestock.
Visit our website to find how Tusk and our project partners are working toward protecting these beautiful cats.

Congratulations Vincent Opyene on being a 2018 Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa finalists!
From a young age Vincent knew that he wanted to make a difference and so he combined his passion for wildlife with his love for the law. Based on his experiences conducting field patrols in national parks for Uganda Wildlife Authority, as well as working as a state prosecutor, Vincent established the Natural Resource Conservation Network (NRCN), a partnership between civil society ...and government to improve how wildlife laws are enforced. As a result he has single-handedly changed how Uganda addresses wildlife crime.
Uganda is a major international transit hub for ivory, pangolins, and other illicit wildlife products from across the region. Since establishing the Natural Resource Conservation Network, its wide-ranging powers have resulted in the arrest of many international wildlife criminals and the investigation of corruption at the highest level.

Congratulations Force Ngwira on being a 2018 Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa finalists!
Force Ngwira was once a direct contributor to the deforestation of Malawi - for 15 years he worked as a successful woodcarver making curios for tourists. As the number of woodcarvers grew, he realised that cutting down slow growing hardwood trees was unsustainable, and soon there would be no trees left for his children, so he formed The Wood Carvers’ Association.
Force is now the Co...untry Director of RIPPLE Africa, Force has developed his passion for the environment and ability to work with people at all levels to achieve long-term sustainable change. Working with 150 full time staff and 4,000 volunteers he manages a series of environmental regeneration programmes focused on fish conservation, tree planting and fuel-efficient cookstove projects.
Force and his team have been responsible for planting eight million trees and, in partnership with local fisherman and their communities, the charity’s ‘Fish for Tomorrow’ project has worked to restock and manage a 300 kilometre stretch of Lake Malawi.
