About Twycross Zoo

Twycross Zoo, in the heart of conservation.

Twycross Zoo Description

Twycross Zoo is renowned as a specialist primate zoo and has a wide variety of monkeys and apes including the UK's only group of bonobos.

We have breeding groups of many endangered primate species so we often have babies and toddlers playing around in our orang utan and bonobo groups, and in many of our monkey groups.

Set in more than 80-acres, we have around 650 animals of almost 150 species to see, including many endangered animals and native species in the Zoo's Nature Reserve.

You can walk with our ring-tailed lemurs in their new walk-through enclosure; see our giant tortoises sunbathing in their new grass area and watch our penguins take their daily walk.

Our keepers present regular talks and feeds where you can learn a bit more about some of our animals such as the chimpanzees, penguins and coatis.

We are open 364 days a year from 10. 00am (we only close Christmas Day)

The Zoo is located only four-miles from junction 11 of the M42 /A42 (which links the M1 and M6) making it readily accessible from anywhere in central England.

We offer free parking.

We visited yesterday with the NHS offer (thankyou!) and half term offer. My 2 children absolutely loved it and both went home with smiles on their faces. The pouring rain didn't dampen their spirits and they had so much fun. It's changed alot since we went in 2015. The new chimpanzee enclosure is fantastic and It was hard to decide a favourite out of the gibbons, chimpanzees or the giraffes! We will definitely be back again!

User

We come to Twycross several times a year and the annual pass is great value for money. The water park for kids is brilliant and my three year old loves it. It’s worth the money whether it’s rain or shine

User

We attended the Apes and Grapes evening last night, and had a wonderful time. A pleasant meal in the restaurant with wine, then a quiet walk around 5e zoo, with the chance to talk to experts and staff about the apes while tasting wine and cheese and biscuits. Lots of chances to take good photos.

User

My wife and I lost our first child through stillbirth just 2 weeks ago and have been trying to create memories with a teddy bear in place of our son, who will have the teddy bear with him in his coffin.

We visited the park today, taking photos of the animals with the teddy and it was all lovely. The zoo means a lot to us as it was our first date 10 years ago.

Just before leaving the zoo today we lost the little teddy bear and the staff at Twycross were so helpful in radioing through the park to the others rangers to look out for the bear, and we are so happy to report that after a worrying 15 minutes we were in Guest Services collecting our missing bear.

Thank you all so much x

User

Me and my husband went with our son, love a day at the zoo and this one certainly didn't disappoint as we saw the snow leopard and her two cubs, absolutely beautiful animals. My son loved the gibon and the new chimpanzee Eden too

User

I went today with my mum dad and 2 daughter just wow what a lovely day blessed with the weather the new water park was amazing so much fun. My first time coming since I was about 3 or 4 and brought my two daughters for the first time they loved it. Wanted to praise you for the wonderful habitats you have for the animals and how clean and tidy the zoo was. The animals are clearly looked after. I've read some other reviews yes there's a few things that need looking at but they don't over shadow the fact that you can see the animals are loved and cared for a surely that's what matters. Looking forward to coming back in the future. We hope the elephants and snow leopards are coming back or being replaced we were upset to not see them today considering they have two of the most largest enclosures at the zoo and no sign to say they weren't there my only critisisum. x

User

I loved visiting yesterday I used to bring my children so haven't been for many years I can't believe how much it's changed n for the better.its good value for the money and amazing the amount of work that's been done there great work.

User

I haven't visited for a while, but I was very impressed with the new Gibbons enclosure and the Chimps Eden enclosure, so much better. I'm hoping the next few projects (once you've saved up your pennies again) will be for the Gorilla's, Cheetahs and Orangutans kids really liked the tree trunk viewing areas in the Eden.

User

Fantastic day. Enjoyed by all. Saw all the animals. There was a lovrey lady working on the chips at about 2pm who answered lots of questions that my little boy had to ask. She was so good with him and really knew her stuff. Thank you for a fantastic day.

User

A super place to learn about our endangered species and how we can support. To see Rothschild Giraffes outside Africa was a bonus 💕x looking forward in 5-10yrs time to see a breeding programme in place, would be amazing to see here at TZ. We had Family passes while the children were growing up and saw yesterday a huge improvement to the animal enclosures and the general appearance of the Zoo. The restaurant food was amazing and we saw the £7.50 three course offer for the children, which looked so appealing - garlic bread in little terracotta pots :) I would love to see a viewing platform for the giraffes, where we could be at eye level and feed them. This is possible in Kenya and it's such an amazing experience x There is so much to see and do for families, highly recommend this Zoo and what it stands for x educating our children that some Species will be lost if we do not take action and care about our World - 5* attraction - thanks to all the staff and of course the beautiful animals x

User

Visited today for fathers day out with my partner and little girl. We had a lovely day and our 1 year old loved it. The new chimpanzee edan is lovely the only downside to it is there isnt much room in there once you get a few pushchairs. So could do with it being a one way system or even a leave your pushchair outside one. As both times we visited today there was a pushchair jam! Other than that was lovely to see the chims in there new home. We also bought 4 mini doughnuts and well what can i say blink and you'd have missed them, not worth £1.50 for 4! Other than that we had a great day and will return again.

User

Had a lovely day at the zoo yesterday with my 3 year , the sun was out so even got to play at the water park but was very disappointed that all of the small monkey walk through enclosures was closed off , it looked as though it was being cleaned out , we arrived around 12.30 and left at 4 so kept going back to see if they open but unfortunately not . This was such a shame as they are our favourite areas of the zoo .

User

We came here yesterday for my sons birthday treat. We’d bought him a feeding the penguins experience as a gift. We’ve had a good day out, although I think the zoo is a little run down. Theres 2 massive glass panels on one of the monkey enclosures that are massively smashed and there are numerous enclosures that are empty, overgrown and unkempt.

The penguin experience was brill. The guy who we did it with took the time to explain what to do, and why, gave my son lots of info about the animals and also took the time to answer questions. The enclosures that are there are lovely and big, lots to see and they obviously care a lot about the animals. Would definitely recommend this if you have little ones who are avid animal lovers!

Overall We enjoyed the day, and it was worth what we paid, but I don’t think we’d be in a hurry to return until there’s some improvements and expansion.

User

Came here today.. the price of entry is very expensive..fair few enclosures empty & run down... some animals were in the enclosures on there own which we fount very unfair on them! The price for drinks food & ice creams are very expensive ! Especially when you have paid 19.95 per adult ... plus the children... it becomes a very expensive day out!

User

Visited today, me and my husband are very disappointed we travelled over an hour to get there the price was different from what it said online, then we couldn’t even see half the animals as they weren’t home. We went to get food from the fish and chip shop for them to say they only had limited food left. We went to the cafe near the gift shop that shut at 6 for them to tell us they were only serving pizza which was hard for my 1 year old son to eat. Won’t be coming again

User

Visited today, in and out in just over an hour. Where have you hidden all the animals?? Lots of empty enclosures, no kiosks open despite being a really hot day. Travelled all the way from Bournemouth really disappointed!

User

Visited today as part of a family birthday celebration.

We have been to Twycross on several occasions but today we found the zoo to be tatty, enclosures overgrown and a lack of exhibits to be seen.

This combined with extortionate refreshment prices. £9.00 for an over cooked hot dog & fried with a bottle of coke.

Also in this hot weather most of the refreshment stall did not have chilled drinks

Sorry but we won’t be going back

User

Certain enclosures seemed small (eg elephants and zebras), and there were no toys for animals (eg primates), which is something they really need in captivity to keep stimulated. We also struggled in the heat as there were no kiosks open to grab a drink and no fountains to fill up our water bottles. Finally, due to the heat, lots of animals were indoors and difficult to see - nobody's fault, but still frustrating.

There were some good things, though - fab kids play areas dotted around, lemur walk was incredible and the keeper talks were entertaining and informative.

Having seen some other reviews, you are a charity/sanctuary, so maybe expectations were a bit high. We would like to come back, but may wait until some of your renovations are done.

User

Me, my partner and little boy went yesterday and never again! What a waste of 226 miles for my little boy to stare through glass at straw, hay and grass. We saw several people smoking cannabis, even walking past the zoo staff and they did nothing! I took it upon myself to say something as I don’t want that around my child! The prices are ridiculous also! I sent you a email today with regards to this matter and other things but still no response. Just awful!
