About Ucl Scicon

A society in UCL trying to bring together world class research and the next generation of scientists.

Ucl Scicon Description

Welcome to SciCon!
At SciCon, our aim is to bring together world class research and the next generation of scientists.

We want to create an environment for a two-way conversation about scientific ideas across all fields.

An informal setting promotes a more open-minded exchange of ideas between researchers and students by replacing the austerity of the lecture hall with lab workshops, talks, networking events and much more! Through collaboration with societies across UCL, students will have the opportunity to gain a new perspective on interdisciplinary research and develop contacts with experts in various fields.

We are excited to announce a workshop on Cosmic Dust! Learn about its origins, significance and how to produce code to model a supernova remnant! ***only 15 tickets available!!***
THEME: Cosmic dust is a key player in virtually every field of astrophysics: whether that be star formation, or galaxy evolution, and it also constitutes the key building blocks of life. The origin of the huge amounts of cosmic dust observed in high redshift galaxies is heavily disputed, one hypothe...sis is that most of this dust is created in supernova remnants.
WORKSHOP: Herschel, the last far-infrared observatory which can observe dust emission at the temperatures we're interested in, was decommissioned in 2013. In this session, we're going to be discussing and solving problems related to how we can indirectly observe this dust, as well as how we'd set about creating code to model a dusty supernova remnant.
SPEAKER: Maria Niculescu-Duvaz is in her second year of studying for a PhD at UCL, after graduating with an MSci also from UCL. Her research interests include supernova remnants, interstellar dust, and planetary nebulae. She has an avid interest in promoting STEM subjects. This led her to work with the Orbyts scheme for two years, designing and co-ordinating a research project based on her PhD studies for high school students. She also often gives outreach talks at schools and participates in events such as the nature day of light and leading a summer school session at UCL.
Only 15 tickets are available! If you have booked a ticket but can no longer attend, please let us known as soon as possible.
