Ucl United Nations Association Description

The UCLU Model United Nations society runs activities centred on the United Nations. These include simulations where a delegate represents a specific country's position in debates on a world issue. These can be as diverse as malaria prevention in the WHO to a no-fly zone in the Security Council. The ultimate aim is to pass a UN resolution addressing the topic. Through these activities we offer members great opportunities to hone their debating and negotiating skills through weekly training sessions. We also offer friendly (and sometimes exotic) socials, great speakers and the opportunity to travel around the UK and internationally.

This is not just a society for debating, but one for people interested in the United Nations and discussing international issues.

As a society we attend conferences all around the UK and the world, with notable trips being to Singapore, Vancouver, Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick and many more. Our society has won many awards including best small delegation in Nottingham and best delegation at NMUN, a conference based in the United Nations New York Headquarters. We heavily subsidize these trips and as a member we try to keep your costs and hassle as low as possible by booking accommodation and sorting your fees.

If you are interested in volunteering and teaching school students about international issues and the UN, we run a schools programme with the VSU. We currently work with four schools across London covering topics from human rights to security. Volunteers will receive special training from UCL and are reimbursed for their expenses.

We welcome both veteran MUNers and beginners! Meetings are held at the UCL campus on Tuesdays from 6-8pm, rooms will be confirmed closer to the start of term.

Venezuela has been facing series hardships, ever since the election of Chavez, and has continued through to the current president, Maduro. Whilst much of the issues facing the Venezuelan people are domestically created, like economic mismanagement, there still exists issues caused by the international community. We appeal to delegates to try and solve this difficult issue.

The United Nations Security Council remains representative of the powers the established it. The nations of the UK, US, France, Russia, China retain their veto powers. In a day and age of the declining influence and power of European powers, and with rising powers within the developing world, is it time to change this outdated system?
We appeal to delegates to come up with a modernised solution.

Brexit has been the most prevalent political issue, in the United Kingdom, for the last 2 years. The desire for most of the British population to leave the European Union, has resulted in numerous talks and negotiations about leaving deals, which would have an effect not just on the United Kingdom, but also much of Europe and the world.
We appeal to delegates to come to a better solution to Brexit.

For our week back from reading week, we will be returning to the Israel-Palestine conflict, with a focus on preparing for LIMUN!
This is a great opportunity to learn more about rules of procedure, as well as gain some great advice on resolution writing!

The Israel-Palestine conflict has been a serious problem for Middle-Eastern Geopolitics for decades. It has sparked numerous conflicts throughout its time, and has been at the forefront of some of the United Nation's many committees. We invite delegates to try an come to a peaceful solution to this conflict, as well as engage in some interesting debate.
