Under 17 Drivers Pathfinder

About Under 17 Drivers Pathfinder

Pathfinder is a practical and theoretical introduction to driving for under age drivers (age 15-16) delivered through an intensive Autumn School program.

Under 17 Drivers Pathfinder Description

"I had the pleasure this weekend of attending the Under 17 Car Club's Pathfinder Project. This uniquely provides a theoretical and practical introduction to driving for pre-licence and novice drivers. Using a structured methodology, the programme develops safe attitudes and behaviours while introducing the technical skills of driving. I was extremely impressed by the event and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be driven safely around the course by some young drivers who only a week before had never been behind the wheel. The benefits of Pathfinder are obvious not just in terms of road safety but also in boosting the confidence of the young people - and their parents, some of whom believed that they would never be able to drive. I was delighted to learn that the project is being pioneered right here in Warwickshire and am proud that we are leading the country in supporting our future drivers. "

Kieran's view of Pathfinder: When I came to the Pathfinder course in October 2016 3 months before I was 17 I had never even sat behind the wheel of a car before. I wasn't very quick to pick things up, was really nervous and mum struggled to sit in the car with me as other people were going around us and getting better quickly. The Pathfinder people were brilliant though they took mum off for a cup of tea quite a few times and put me with an ADI instructor in a different car ...until I could sort out the basics. My dyslexia affects how my brain works but once I have understood something it stays with me for good. By the end of the week I had lots of confidence, mum was in the car with me and really calm, I drove lots of other cars including automatics and sports cars and I won driver of the week. I was really shocked because I didn't get the highest level of driving award but I kept trying and learning. I learnt so much on the course about driving and safety that it took no time at all to pass my theory weeks after I was 17 in January and then my practical test in early April just 3 months from start to finish. I didn't drive a car between the course finishing and my 17th birthday so all that learning stayed with me. All my mates have been really impressed with how good and safe a driver I am and how much knowledge I have about road conditions, the car and the law. I could not have done this without going on the course it was absolutely brilliant and so were all the people who helped out on it. My mates parents think I am a safe driver too and have no worries letting me drive their boys around unlike some others on the road where we live. I am moving on to Pass plus assessment now and the IAM assessment after that. I want to show that a 17 year old can be responsible and safe as a driver and I learnt this by being on the Pathfinder course.
