Excitement, passion, partnership. All these have defined Union over the years. We’re proud to be part of the story of UK coffee – and that of the coffee farmers we work with, worldwide.
DON'T DRINK AND WALK
It's hard to imagine today, but in Britain a few decades ago, you’d never see someone drinking a takeaway coffee in the street. There were no baristas. There was no café culture. No-one paid much attention to the quality of their coffee.
So our story begins in San Francisco, where our founders, Steven and Jeremy, were working. One day, they ducked into a tiny café, whose staff were roasting fresh coffee. They watched the beans come tumbling out of the roaster: hot, fresh, aromatic. And that was that.
COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEE
Inspired, they threw themselves into the world of coffee, learning anything and everything they could.
Then they decided to bring that West Coast inspiration to London.
So they quit their day jobs. Packed up, shipped out, settled in, started pitching. Sold everything they had to rent a workshop and buy a roaster. And a fax machine (cutting edge, back then).
IN GOOD TASTE
Union was stirring – in more ways than one.
It was a whole new approach to coffee. Buying great coffee, roasting it in small batches, creating a more flavourful cup. Even talking about a more flavourful cup – and introducing flavour profiles – was new.
Little did we know: an even more meaningful union was waiting to be discovered.
THE COFFEE FARMERS WHO STOPPED FARMING COFFEE
In 2001 Steven and Jeremy were in Guatemala, on a research trip, when Arabica prices fell to their lowest point in 30 years. They saw, first hand, the impact on farmers, who now couldn’t earn a living from coffee. They saw fourth generation farmers pull up their coffee trees – their birthright – with their own hands.
Farmers had never been part of the coffee story. They were anonymous even to exporters, combining their crop into one mill.
Steven and Jeremy wanted to do things differently. They bypassed the brokers. Invested long-term in farming communities. Paid farmers not just a minimum wage – but a living one.

Today, Union does more than tell our farmers’ stories: we create new stories together.
We work together, long-term, pooling our knowledge – on coffee varieties, harvesting techniques, sustainable farming, washing and drying – to create the perfect cup of coffee.
Because great coffee doesn’t just make conversation. Great coffee is made from conversation.
Today, our team of coffee lovers and enthusiasts keep that conversation going. Barista trainers, roasters, cupping specialists, all of us. A conversation everyone can take part in and enjoy.
Ours is a worldwide union – one of farmers, roasters, and all lovers of great coffee. All living, loving and speaking coffee.

Steven (our co-founder) & Pascale (our sustainable relationship manager) have just returned from Indonesia, visiting farmers and exploring new relationships. They met Hendra, a small-scale farmer in Gayo, known for his experimental coffee processing techniques. These techniques are unusual for this area and resulting in different flavour complexities. Pascale & Steven also visited a covered drying facility. It's important to visit during the harvest season to see how the coffee is picked and processes and to give guidance where needed. We'll be sharing more pictures of our visits to producer partners over the summer so you can find out more about where our coffee comes from. #unionatorigin #uniondirecttrade

Unquestionable quality
The best coffee I've ever tasted, brilliant choice of coffees to choose from and a great website with information on different types, strengths and regions which makes selection easy if you are new to coffee.
Really like the fact that you can order a small size order so it fits through the letterbox. Delivery is prompt and gives you the date your coffee is roasted on, and the packaging is really nice and makes it feel like a real quality product.
If I was being picky I would like a third size bag option inbetween the 200gram and 1kg sizes and also an option to have an account where you can earn coffee points on your orders to save up and use towards purchases, just a few thoughts. Once you try union coffee you won't go anywhere else.

Revelation & Gajah Mountain - Wowww! Just saying - tremendous depth of flavour with revelation just nudging it for me.
Quick delivery, and very high quality beans that come from Colombian women cooperative (i wish all coffee gatherers had just/fair working conditions like that).
Still can't believe that Castillo is just so good and tasty coming from Robusta genetics, but I am guessing it's just also due to high quality source.
My wife and I have stopped buying coffee when we're out and about - we just spoil ourselves with this fantastic stuff that you guys are making. ��

I'm originally from Seattle, WA and I love coffee. I've lived in rural Britain for the last 25+ years, and kind of gave up on the idea of coffee here, settled for coffee-that-would-do and tea. Then my husbands niece moved to London and one day she gave me some Union Coffee and I thought I was in heaven!! Since then I have had so much fun tasting roasts, different brewing methods and drinking GREAT coffee and I thank you!! �
I have been searching for the right coffee beans to feed my morning addiction and have found them in the Revelation espresso blend. Pleasing on the eye packaging that allows you to seal in the freshness, the smell of the coffee from pouring the beans into the grinder to taking the first sip is intoxicating. I woke this morning and forgot I was fresh out...just ordered a mother load from Ocado!
