United Car & Van Rental

Hired a van for the weekend but at the last minute plans changed due to unforeseen issues. Spoke with them on Sunday (very short notice indeed!!!) The staff were very accommodating and moved the date at no extra charge. Michelle at the desk is courteous and very professional and helped me out every step of the way. Highly recommended, probably best value in the area.

I hired a Vauxhall Astra from United for one weekend. It cost £125, an extra £30 to the rates on their website, which was not a good start. I had little choice as my usual car hire company (Kendall) was out of cars and I needed to get to my grandmother's 91st birthday! Car was fairly old (2009/10) and had a "Jelly Bean" air-freshner which made it smell like, well, jelly beans. Quite nauseating for our kids and took a while for the smell to go even when we took it out. Weekend went ok and returned the car on Monday morning. They did not check it when I handed it back and just took the keys. Thought everything was fine. I then got an email an hour later saying there were "scratches noted on the bonnet". I went back to have a look, there was only one scratch and it was no more than c. 2cm across and seemed to me to be superficial. I did not notice anything before I handed the car back. I explained to the United employee that it was, in my view, no worse than the scratches on the wheel hubs but they did not accept this. I then was charged £294 to have the entire bonnet resprayed. This despite the fact that they had other cars in their yard with more serious scratches/dents etc. Will not be using them again. Suggest you avoid - there are better local alternatives that would not, in my experience, charge you for things like this.

Update - Feb 2016. New company now owns this business and just offered me a free days hire for my trouble with United. Very kind of them! Not yet tried but probably worth a look.

We hire a van or 2 every year for our annual fishing trip to France, Douglas looks after us and we would recommend to anyone .
