Professor David Cooper representing the University of Chichester Business School at the CPES Project (Channel Payment for Ecosystem Services) in Paris as the 'chef de file' (project manager), leading a €4million European project to significantly improve the water quality in rivers and lakes in the south of England and north of France.
Currently only 30 to 40 per cent of waters entering the English Channel are classified as ‘Good Ecological Status’ which is largely due to the high level of nitrates and phosphates in the water as a result of intensive farming. The cross-border project, will aim to reduce nutrient levels by implementing six pilot PES (Payment for Ecosystem Services) schemes across the Channel area.

Velo South – 23rd September
On 23rd September over 15,000 cyclists will be taking part in Velo South – a 100 miles bike ride through the South Downs (see https://www.velosouth.com)
The University of Chichester Business School has been commissioned by the event organisers to examine the economic and social impact of the event. As part of this activity we are looking for volunteers to assist with spectators surveys at the Goodwood Motor Circuit and in Pulborough on Sunday 23rd... September. We need approximately 20 volunteers with payment of £10 per hour (up to a maximum of 8 hours). We will cover your train fare from Bognor Regis to Pulborough, and travel expenses from Bognor/Chichester to the motor circuit. In both sites, we will be asking spectators about their spending on the day as part of their visit to watch the event, and also the potential social impact in terms of encouraging people to start cycling.
If you would be interesting then please contact me directly: Dr Andy Clegg – a.clegg@chi.ac.uk
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Community and partnership initiatives – Developing a strategic approach using the Student Journey Model
The focus on learning communities and working in partnership with students is now an integral part of the HE experience. Consequently, there is now a compelling case for adopting a more strategic and student-focused approach to ensure that community initiatives are appropriately planned, embedded and resourced. This paper will demonstrate how the Student Journey Model (SJM)... provides an invaluable tool to strategically plan, design and deliver community initiatives at different stages of the student experience. The SJM provides a holistic framework that allows the different perspectives and paradigms surrounding effective community development to be assessed and mapped, alongside a realistic consideration of the challenges and opportunities influencing implementation at a programme, departmental and institutional level. The paper will critique community and partnership development on the Tourism Management degree and within the Business School at the University of Chichester including reference to indicative initiatives that have included: work and takeaway evenings run in conjunction with the Business Society; developing relationships through personal tutoring; and partnership-engagement in marking, assessment and module design. The paper will also illustrate how community thinking has extended into community outreach programmes, and developing strategic relationships with local schools and colleges. It will also address the importance of Alumni-related activities, and that communities of learning do not finish after graduation. The paper will conclude that an innovative and creative approach to developing communities of learning using the SJM affords a notable enhancement for students, as communities based around shared-identity, belonging, mutual support and comradeship evolve.

Students as Partners in Research and Assessment: An Applied Reflection from a Level 5 Research Skills Module
Educational partnerships are now an integral part of HE, permeating through all aspects of learning and teaching pedagogies. This is particularly evident in assessment design, where the focus has shifted from the traditional teacher-led process into alternatives, including peer-, self- and co-assessment practices (Dochy et al, 1999). This paper demonstrates how a partn...ership approach has been central to enhancing student understanding of research techniques on a Level 5 Research Skills module. Partnership has evolved as a result of a seven-year longitudinal study examining student anxiety towards statistics, a well-documented issue within HE research (Perney and Ravid, 1991; HEA 2016). Students are asked to complete a pre-module survey looking at their familiarity and experience with statistics and their attitudes towards statistics and causes of perceived anxiety. The research reaffirms that a lack of confidence in maths, coupled with confusion between maths and statistics influences levels of anxiety. The results have been guided the underpinning pedagogy of the module, and the nature of the subsequent partnership working. Students undertake an applied, small-scale research project, and present their findings as a research poster, which is subsequently co-marked with the students at a live marking event. The students are required to self-assess their work against specific assessment criteria, and critically feedback to staff their reflections on the research process. The feedback indicates that this format develops a rich dialogue with the students which serves to not only improve student understanding of the assessment criteria but also their understanding of research methods and data analysis.

First conference presentation ‘in the bag’ and really pleased with the reception it got at the IBG-RGS International Conference at Cardiff University; lots of positive feedback particularly around the fact that I video the moderation process for the poster marking on the research skills module.
