FALCON is the NIHR Unit on Global Surgery's first international RCT. It will be testing interventions to reduce wound infection in abdominal surgery.
FALCON has now completed regulatory processes in the UK and we're now working with our partners across 10+ low- and middle-income countries (including Rwanda, Mexico, Ghana, Pakistan, and South Africa) to secure national approvals and get the trial started!

The NIHR Unit on Global Surgery's low/middle income country (LMIC) collaborators scoped and long listed 12 potential research + 12 potential guideline topics for future studies.

The GlobalSurg - The Global Surgical Outcomes Project and NIHR Unit on Global Surgery at the Universities of Birmingham and Edinburgh recently published their most recent international cohort study in Lancet Infectious Disease. A total of 1800 collaborators in 343 centres across 66 countries contributed, with everyone listed as a PubMed citable coauthor: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29452 941
GlobalSurg's next study has just launched. This is looking at the quality of c...olon, gastric, and breast cancer surgery globally. Any hospital in the world is welcome to participate. Data collection is over any 4 week period in April-October 2018.

Our GlobalSurg - The Global Surgical Outcomes Project study has been published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases today! Congratulations to Ewen Harrison's team in Edinburgh and our collaborative co-authors across the world who have contributed to this important study!
The GlobalSurg-2 study found that people having surgery in low income countries are more likely to develop an infection than those in wealthier nations, have higher antibiotic use and are more likely to be infec...ted with antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Expressions of interest are invited from surgical registrars or senior surgical core trainees for a fully funded PhD studentship within the Academic Department of Surgery at the University of Birmingham. During this 3 year project the PhD student will develop a new device for use in colorectal ...surgery, taking it through design and approvals stages before completing a first-in-man clinical study.
The studentship is funded by an National Institute for Health Research project grant and attracts a full basic clinical salary.
