What is Holistic Herbal Medicine?
Using 'whole' plant extracts is a traditional way of using herbs but you may find certain constituents of herbs are extracted and made in tablets. This is usually done because that particular constituent may have shown in experiments to have a particular effect. Unfortunately, herbal medicine doesn't really work like that. It's all about the sum of ALL the parts.
An example of this is seen when Curcumin, a constituent of turmeric, is tak...en long term in capsule form and resulted in impaired liver function. In contrast, whole turmeric, rather than just one phytochemical from it, will actually support liver and gallbladder function. The reason for this is that nature provides all the constituents together in a plant because they work synergistically together.

I’m a perennial related to sunflowers and daisies. I'm indigenous to the United States, but am now cultivated for medicinal use in the western US, Canada, and Europe and New Zealand. Nine species are known, but three are used medicinally with two species being popular in Australia. My height differs by species but I am characterised by a cone-shaped flower. Traditionally I was prescribed for snake bites, typhus, septic wounds, diphtheria, scarlet fever & dysentery. In a modern clinic I am used as an anti-microbial, vulnerary, adaptogen and alterative.
