Last night I went to see the play "Billy Elliot" at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London's West End. It's actually difficult to describe what a profoundly moving and visceral experience live theatre can be. I've often marvelled at the level of talent some performers have, but the cast of "Billy Elliot" elevated that standard to new heights. Not only is the first half of the play carried by some incredibly talented children, their professionalism and skills as finely tuned as any veteran's, the entire play is elevated to an almost etherial place by their lead actor and dancer Brodie Donougher. Not only can this kid act, his level of athleticism and lyrical movement moved me to tears on at least 5 occasions. At one point there was no point in even using kleenex, I just let the tears free-flow down my cheeks.

To see such talent harnessed at that precarious age between childhood and manhood, a stage in life that is but a fleeting moment, was truly a privilege and an honour beyond my words. It was clearly evident from the adult cast that they recognized and acknowledged the incredible gifts that Brodie brings to the stage. There is one particular scene where Billy is accompanied onstage by his 'future self' (James Butcher) in a dance scene where he is projecting into the future in his aspiration to join the Royal Dance Company. He dances alongside the adult actor in tandem, occasionally interacting to catapult himself into the future. The scene was absolutely breathtaking and showed an emerging maturity as both actor and dancer that was like watching the birth of a shooting star and certainly the next great superstar of stage and film. There's just no denying the amazing gift that this young man possesses. Props also have to be given to Billy's cross-dressing best friend, Michael played brilliantly by Tomi Fry. His brilliant comic relief added levity to the play and the "dress scene" has to be seen to be appreciated... Brilliant! Overall I had forgotten how incredibly well written this play is and how ahead of its time it was for addressing issues of bullying, sexuality, isolation and the mad world we live in where corporations try to break unions' backs (the Maggie Thatcher scene is not lost on me). An overall brilliant performance and an absolute privilege to watch. It reminded me to always remember the child in each one of us, to dream big and in the face of adversity remember to "dance!" BRAVO!!! Blair Boudreau, Toronto, Canada

I’m disabled and just wanted to say Owen and Olivia have been absolute rock stars - they talked me down from a panic attack and were really attentive and helpful while I got my tickets. Thank you!

I emailed the theatre 2 days before the show saying that my daughter and I would need extra assistance on the night of our showing. They were extremely helpful and upon arrival at 6:45 we were greeted by Elizabeth who fetched our tickets and showed us to our seats, checked on us at the Interval, aided us to a speedy exit. She made the whole Hamilton experience a fantastic one. The musical itself was also fantastic with great acting and singing by all the cast. I would recommend the show but would the staff are great at there jobs. Well done to all

I attended the theatre last night 9th of April. I have had a hip replacement and needed to sit down before the doors were open. We asked for some assistance we hadn't booked any disabled access. The Theatre staff could not have been more helpful they let me into the entrance and found me a seat. They have dedicated assistance staff I was introduced to Elizabeth who once we had collected our tickets showed my daughter and I to the bar. Elizabeth found us seats ran downstairs to get us a merchandise catalog sorted out so she could bring us drinks down to the auditorium at the interval. Elizabeth came back a few times to check on us showed us to our seats brought us our drinks. And to top it all Hamilton was just fantastic. Fantastic night thank you.

Gorgeous theater!

Easy to get to from the station, not really many places to sit waiting before you go into the auditorium for those less able to stand too long, but friendly staff and th3n show was amazing, definately would go again.

User

Both myself & my daughter attended the Matinee for Hamilton yesterday on 18th.

We were delighted to have Owen the best Usher. He helped with the merchandise, the bar & the toilet. He was so knowledgeable too which my daughter took full advantage of, getting all the gossip & information.

I also have to mention the lovely Scottish usher outside who helped us get into the theatre & chatted to us afterwards.

Everyone was so lovely & it made for the best evening ever !!

User

Beautiful! It is now a fabulous theatre, very comfortable, great view of stage..

Beautiful theatre

User

Absolutely loved it! Belly laughing in parts and fighting tears back in others. I've read the book, I've watched the film but watching this show was the best. Really loved the part where the young Billie was dancing with the older Billie. ..just amazing

User

A thoroughly enjoyable experience, marred slightly by a few who found their own anecdotes more riveting than the performance, but I can't blame the venue for that. Every star well-earned by the venue, cast, orchestra and staff.

User

There has been a theatre on this site since 1832 - well before the coming of the railways. When Victoria Street and Victoria Station were built, the Royal Standard Music Hall became, in 1886, 'the most comfortable Hall of entertainment in London ... no expense has been spared'.

User

Gorgeous theatre, great staff, and of course Hamilton was amazing. I was excited when I heard about the refurbishment thinking that at last the seating would be updated and comfortable, well not to be I'm afraid, after ploughing all that money into the theatre the seating is still impossibly tight, uncomfortable and awkward. Such a shame.

User

Gorgeous Theatre but the leg room is nothing less than appalling in the grand circle, I feel sorry for the person who has to sit in front of me with my knees on their shoulders.

User

Unless you have a ticket for the show you cannot buy from their gift shop. Smart move.
