Our blog is back!
virtuswlc.blogspot.com
When we stopped running sessions late last year our website lapsed along with the blog, but it's now back on a different platform due to demand and the amount of questions we get asked, we thought it could be really helpful.
... All of the old posts are on there and more new omes will be added soon 🏋️🏋️🏋️

We've been pretty quiet on here recently, so we think you're due a round up of what we've been up to!
This year has been an awesome first year for Virtus. Check out the list below for some of our main achievements:
1 World Masters Championships Lifter - 16th place... 1 British U23 Championships Medallist 1 UK top 5 Ranked Lifter 7 Domestic Competitions - 6 Medals, 3 Gold
We don't like blowing our own trumpet, but to the best of our knowledge that makes us the most successful weightlifting club in Cambridgeshire and gives us the best competitive weightlifting results of any CrossFit affiliate in the county too.
Wouldn't be possible without a squad of dedicated and hard working lifters though. You guys rock!

If you’ve managed to miss the spam on our other social media recently, Rachel (-69kg) recently competed at the masters World Weightlifting Championships in Barcelona, Spain last week.
16th in the world sounds pretty cool, right?!
We don’t like blowing our own trumpet, but if you want to train with international masters lifters, senior UK top 3 lifters and people who have qualified for National championships, then come and drop by!

Tomorrow @rachelprincey and I fly out to Barcelona for the 2018 World Masters Weightlifting Championships. - When I set this club up 6 months ago I really didn’t expect Virtus to have a lifter competing on the international stage within the year, but it just goes to show what can be achieved with Rachel’s dedication, access to a great facility in @crossfit888 and support of the rest of the team in the gym. - Very excited to be helping Rachel on this journey. This will be awesome! 🤙🏻

@fitnesswithfreddie and her best snatch of 50kg today combined with her 62kg clean and jerk, this qualified her for the British Under 23 Championships. - So proud of Freddie and what she’s managed to achieve over such a short period of time. There is lots more to come. - Thanks so much too to @emcam28 for being cheerleader and coaching me during my lifting too! I’m dissappointed to have missed the 100kg snatch, but very pleased with the 125kg clean and jerk.... - Good competition all in all!

Accessory work 🔥 Snatch lift off + snatch. Nice and light and snappy.
If you want to know more about how to program accessory work then take a look at our latest blog post, about how to structure a training session properly.

No barbell involved here... - My first ever bar muscle up! I have been able to do rings for a while but this is the first one I’ve managed on the bar and I’m happy with that! Skills take years to develop and sometimes you just need to wait. - Also back squatted double bodyweight for the first time today, 155kg, for a PB.... - Thanks @ronin_est2015 @niksbarnard @kasianaumczyk @s.l.yeates for the encouragement! 🤙🏻

@nikkijeepswaters did so well today, finishing on a 36kg snatch and a 45kg clean and jerk for an 81kg total in the British Masters Open which is her first ever competition.
Nikki’s not been lifting for long and thought hard about whether competing was something she really wanted to do, and I’m so glad she decided to go for it because she’s done herself proud and really enjoyed it in the process.
Personally I’m so pleased Nikki trusted me to help her throughout the whole proce...ess of preparation, from training programmes, to weight management, competition day advice and obviously coaching her through the competition too.
The reason I love coaching is because you can help people achieve things that they otherwise may have talked themselves out of. It’s not about winning tons of medals, setting records, etc. For me, it’s about showing people they don’t need to limit themselves because of ‘embarrassment’ or because of fear of failure, and all I need to try and do as a coach is get them into that mindset.
That’s the change I love seeing in people and Nikki has made that change herself in a great way. Well done!

Jerks should be driven upwards and back, behind the head. - If you watch one from a side angle you should see the bar move noticeably backwards by the time it is caught in the split position. If it moves in a straight line then it’s too far forward. - This isn’t perfect, at all, and you can see a little forwards movement at the start as I dip that shouldn’t be there, but fixing stuff is half the fun 😅... - Try some power jerks to ingrain it, because there’s nowhere to hide on those 🔥🏋️‍♂️🤙🏻

@reedvanessa working hard on her programme on Monday! Equalled her PB snatch again... twice 🧐🔥

A 95kg snatch today for a heavy single. - Had it recorded and managed to get a bar path tracker on it so thought I’d try and break it down. - Full speed, slow mo, frame by frame. It’s not perfect by any means, but I hope it’s helpful!

Very pleased to announce that @niksbarnard is now a part of the Virtus coaching team. - Nikki has been involved in CrossFit for over 4 years, having been coached by regional athletes in the past and has competed herself at a good level too. - Nikki recently qualified as a coach and we can’t wait for her to make her mark on the team 🏋️‍♀️.... - Catch Nikki on Mondays at 18:30.

This is very cool. Thanks to @weightlifting_lab for the video! - Emphasising how the bar should be driven vertically up when it contacts the hips and not forward. This is 87kg at 77kg bodyweight. -
