About Visit Masham

Masham in North Yorkshire.

Visit Masham Description

A warm welcome awaits you in the historic market town of Masham- set in lower Wensleydale.

Wander round the largest market square in Yorkshire and enjoy the calmness and peace reminiscent of days gone by.

But don’t be deceived by the calm atmosphere – we are a buzzing and lively community and there is always something to do and see.

Spend some time with us and you will soon come to appreciate the lively lifestyle and beautiful countryside that is waiting to be discovered!

Our Community Office is the old Police House off the Market Square and is home to Mashamshire Community Library and the Blue Light Gallery where local artists display and sell their work. Our wonderful volunteers are local and have a wealth of knowledge about the area and attractions. Come in and say hello!

Ever wondered why there are so many crabs in Masham Church when it's a long way to the sea? The answer lies in the coat of arms of the Scrope family, from whom the Danbys were descended. Richard le Scrob was one of Edward the Confessor's Norman favourites, and so they were already settled in England (Herefordshire) at the time of the Conquest. The family motto, Devant si je puis (Forward if I can), is a sardonic allusion to their name, which come from ‘scrob’ - crab in Norman French.
