Happy Summer Bank Holiday! For this occasion, we invite you to have a sneak peak at the golden summer at the Andy Warhol estate which was captured by legendary Jonas Mekas. Mekas, says that this particular summer spent in the company of Warhol and Peter Beard, was “one of happiness and continuous celebrations of life and friendships.” (More info on Newyorktimes: https://www.nytimes.com/…/warhol-kenned y-hamptons-jonas-mek…)

Jonas Mekas brings a poet's sensibility to the diary film style that permeates his work. His vision is unique in its ability to capture personal moments of beauty, celebration and joy. His work is part of a specially commissioned Portfolio comprising nine images, each depicting friends of the artist performing for each other or the camera. Derived from the original 16mm film stock, this Portfolio captures Mekas's constant and playful chronicling of the world around him over the course of his career. Artists, musicians, and dancers (including Miles Davis, John Lennon, and Andy Warhol) are captured in unguarded and personal moments. The center of it is digital arts and digital technology, and we all do things now without thinking, “Oh this could be the stuff of history. How will people look back on this?” It’s just being done because somebody has to do it, because they are obsessed, possessed, and do it.’ Read the full interview with Jonas Mekas here on Artspace:

"Andy was sitting on the floor of my loft watching movies with me," Jonas Mekas said. "We started talking about art and filmmaking and very soon after, he started making films. He had a big exhibition in 1965. The recognition came later." More about private world of ‘60s legends below on CNN:

Jonas Mekas' ode to Yoko Ono, John Lennon, George Maciunas, and Andy Warhol in his signature diaristic 16mm style. It’s “a movie of memory,” Mekas says. Read more on NOWNESS

George Maciunas: The Man Who Invented SoHo. Read this amazing article by Roslyn Berstein. ‘Fluxhouse II, the first successful Maciunas Fluxhouse at 80 Wooster Street, became a magnet for the avant-garde who were drawn to Jonas Mekas‘ Film-Makers’ Cinematheque, a ground-floor space that hosted happenings, film screenings, dance and theater performances, concerts and arts shows. Hundreds of artists including Trisha Brown, Richard Foreman, Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, and Andy Warhol showed their work in and around the building’ Huffington Post

Jonas Mekas’ work was closely related to that of George Maciunas and their ideas have been materialized in joint projects. His film Zefiro Torna, released in 1992, is dedicated to the memory of his dear friend.

‘PROMOTE A REVOLUTIONARY FLOOD AND TIDE IN ART. Promote living art, anti-art, promote NON ART REALITY to be fully grasped by all peoples, not only critics, dilettantes and professionals’, - this is a quote from the FLUXUS manifesto coined by George Maciunas. To put it simply, FLUXUS is not an art style, it is an attitude - and it is supposed to be fun and simple.

Jonas Mekas says that the arts, philosophy and education should be priorities in the The New York Times. So true. Plus, he’s got another 5 books in the works, a few films and raising funds for a major project.
