Dyslexia and SpLD are terms that cover a broad range of symptoms. We see many children with Meares Irlen for colorimetry testing. This is also know as scotopic sensitivity or pattern glare. It can result in the words moving or being distorted, feeling the page is too bright and being distracted by the spaces between words.
Prescription coloured lenses are the exact colour, hue and saturation to make reading comfortable, relaxed and fluid.

It often amazes us how many children have not had their eyes tested. Testing at school is not the same as an eye examination and tests not only the ability to see in the distance but the health of the eyes. We also check how the eyes work together and how easily the eyes come together for reading.
Eye examinations for children under 16 are free and we can see children of any age.
We have picture tests for those who don't know letters yet and we are used to limited attention ...spans, fidgeting and children who are scared.
With branches in Durham. Lanchester, Prudhoe and Ryton we offer a local friendly service.

People often ask us why we specialise in children with dyslexia.
The answer is simple. Our managing director was affected by dyslexia as a child and found learning reading and spelling difficult. This led him to specialise in this area.
The other reason is making a difference, seeing the change in the children we see and watching a child's confidence grow!

Did you know? 80% of everything that you have learnt in your lifetime is learnt through your vision?

If eye movements are not smooth and fluid reading across a page will be difficult and time consuming. Letters and words can easily be missed so sentence don't make sense. Sentences need to be reread and this means that it can take much longer to read a page.
We give simple eye exercises to ensure that eye movements are smooth that reduces reading time, reduces mistakes and improves retention and comprehension.

We are all born with certain reflexes such as throwing our arms and crying when startled (morro reflex). These disappear as we grow up and are replaced with new ones. Most of the children we see with dyslexia and other SpLD haven't lost one or more of these reflexes (classed as retained reflexes).
The vision system develops as these reflexes are lost, and if they are retained the visual system often does not develop correctly. We test for all of these reflexes during our assessments and by finding the reflexes than are retained we can give exercises to help remove them.
This can then help the visual system develop properly removing issues such as missing words and lines.

Did you know?? We have technology that allows us to track your child's eye movements as they read. This allows us to pinpoint where issues are occuring. We can then show you exactly how your child reads, what they see, what they miss, what they re-read and the speed that they do this! By finding the issues we can find the solution
