Wallingford Maternity And Birthing Centre

About Wallingford Maternity And Birthing Centre

The Wallingford Birth Centre is a friendly, midwifery-led unit run by experienced community midwives and maternity support workers

Wallingford Maternity And Birthing Centre Description

We can offer you one-to-one care during labour with a midwife who is highly experienced in caring for women in natural childbirth. Our midwives are skilled at identifying possible complications: your safety is paramount. If your midwife is concerned at any point about the safety of you or your baby she will transfer you to the John Radcliffe Hospital Women's Centre, Oxford, by ambulance.

During labour your midwife will help you find comfortable, supported upright and forward-leaning positions as labour progresses, using equipment such as a bean bag, floor mattress, birthing pool or birth ball. Your own choice of music is encouraged. Massage, aromatherapy, TENS, Entonox (gas and air) and pain relieving Meptid injection are also available, should you need them.

If you would like to have your baby here:

your pregnancy should be straightforward
you should not have any medical or obstetric problems
you should go into labour at between 37 and 42 weeks.
If you do not meet the above conditions but you still wish to have your baby with us, or at home with our support, please speak to one of our supervisors.

If you live outside Oxfordshire but you are thinking of having your baby at the Wallingford Birth Centre, please discuss this with your local community midwife. You will need to make an appointment to see us, and you may want to come and have a look around.

After the birth
If you wish, we make sure you have skin-to-skin contact with your baby and help you to breastfeed soon after the birth. Our unit has been awarded the UNICEF Global Baby Friendly Award for our commitment to helping mothers breastfeed. We will also help you to look after your baby. The length of your stay may vary from just a few hours to a couple of days depending on your needs. Our aim is that you leave the unit feeling rested and confident in caring for your baby.

Some mothers like to transfer to the Wallingford Birth Centre for their postnatal care shortly after giving birth in the delivery suite at the John Radcliffe Hospital Women's Centre.

After you return home you may phone our 24 hour advice line for any concerns.

Tel: 01491 826037
Other support we can give you includes home visits, breastfeeding support or return visits to the ward should you wish to come back and see us for help.

Yesterday we celebrated our wonderful Maternity Support Workers (MSW) by having a little celebration tea. Thank you wonderful ladies for all you do!
Love the midwives and women of Wallingford/Didcot 💛

We are lucky enough to have been chosen to be one of Tesco Bags of Help projects.
So each time you are in Tesco in Didcot, between now and Jan 1st, pop your little blue coin in our column and help us raise some money for a new bilimeter. These machines enable us to monitor jaundice in new born babies.
Don’t forget to share 😁
... 🔵🔵🔵🔵 = 💷 = 😃👶🏾👶🏿👶🏻
Edited to say that it’s also in Tesco Express in Didcot and Cholsey. If you don’t get given a coin, ask for one 🙂

If you live outside of Oxfordshire, (Berkshire or Buckinghamshire) and would like to birth your baby with us at Wallingford, a change of notes appointment will need to be arranged BEFORE you are 34 weeks pregnant. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept any women after 34 weeks without Oxford blue notes. For more information please contact us on 01491 826037.

To mark the end of Baby Loss Awareness Week, the midwives and MSWs have their candles lit tonight.
We are thinking of all the baby’s who were born sleeping or taken too soon from their Mummy’s, Daddy’s and families. Those who world stood still, shattered into pieces and would never be the same again. The siblings who wonder “what if...” and never got to play with their brother or sister. #waveoflight #babyloss #BLAW2018

This is very true 🤱🏻💛

In September, the Wallingford and Didcot Team welcomed 17 babies into the world.
13 babies were born at Wallingford Birthing Centre and 4 babies were born at home - 12 boys and 5 girls. There were 5 babies born in water.

We would honestly add some extra stars if we could. The midwives and staff at Wallingford have, at every stage of our pregnancy and delivery, gone above and beyond the call of duty. They provided us good advice and guidance throughout a difficult delivery that fortunately had a successful outcome. The post birth care delivered at the centre by the support staff, and the ability to stay until we felt ready was invaluable and helped us ease into life at home. Excellent people delivering excellent results in difficult circumstances. Thank you so much!

We had planned on having our daughter at Wallingford ever since we visited when I was around 20 weeks pregnant. The facilities are immaculate, the surroundings are peaceful and the support staff and midwives could not do more for us both before, during and after the birth. I have called Wallingford on a number of occasions since having our daughter for advice and support and really feel like I could ask any question, no matter how silly. Thank you so much Wallingford!

We had our first baby at Wallingford yesterday morning and could not be more grateful. The love and care we received there from staff was phenomenal. From our first tour of the centre to being discharged with the baby everyone was so calm, kind and welcoming. It is the perfect environment to bring your little human into the world!

I could never sing high enough praises of this lovely place or this incredible team. Thank you ladies!!

We birthed our first baby at Wallingford on 23rd May 2014 & I'm so pleased we did!it was homely & relaxed & they ALL gave us the best care we could've asked for or imagined!i have preached to every friend I know how amazing it was & would recommend to anyone!Carol Starbuck & Elle (don't know her surname!!) a student midwife who actually delivered our baby got us both through our experience...they were amazing! They were so attentive & made us feel so relaxed & at ease & thanks to them we had an amazing experience.Jan Kipling who was our midwife throughout my pregnancy wanted to be there to deliver our baby even though she was on holiday!unfortunately, she was away but checked in to see how I was doing...how much more attentive can u get?!thanks to the Wallingford Maternity Unit it only took me about an hour to say I would go through this experience all over again!!

Our little man was born in July at Wallingford and I couldn't rate it there more highly. From our first greeting at the door through to our first home visit, the team were amazing. A lot of first time mums are worried about not being at the JR, but having wanted to go there from the beginning of my pregnancy, after my tour around it was an easy choice and I don't regret it for one moment. Can't wait to have future babies here too!

Our little girl Clara was born at Wallingford Maternity Unit on 12th February this year and my husband and I really can't speak highly enough of our experience. Clara is our first child and we didn't know what to expect with the birth or labour, but throughout our entire stay we felt so well cared for, reassured and in the safest of hands.

The entire midwifery team, plus trainee midwives, were incredibly supportive and welcoming. Nothing seemed too much trouble (and I did sometimes feel I pushed my luck with the number of times I phoned with questions after we were allowed home, but everyone I spoke to was so kind). The aftercare was fantastic. Clara and I had some issues with breastfeeding, but the support we received made us able to continue with it and I'm so grateful for that additional time the staff gave us.

Thank you all so much for helping to make Clara's birth such a wonderful experience. We always recommend the maternity unit to our friends and hope to return ourselves one day!

One month ago my Daughter was born in Wallingford. Throughout the entire process never did I feel the centres of my world, my wife and child were in anything but the best hands possible. The care they recieved was copious and allways a minimum of 1 on 1 often more. I don't have much to compare to but I dont think you could possibly hope for anything better than the amazing level of care we recieved at Wallingford.

On the anniversary of the nhs I'd like to say thank you thank you thank you to everyone at the wallingford maternity unit. Thank you for both of my beautiful sons and for helping us with our breast feeding journeys. Especially enormous thank you to the maternity care assistants. Your pay does not reflect the huge impact you have on our lives and those of our little ones. Ill always be grateful.

My labour began here on the 14/07 and I cannot thank the midwives (Sian and Cheryl) enough for the care that they provided throughout my labour. These ladies were incredibly supportive and made me feel at ease throughout. Although I had to be transferred to the JR these ladies joined me and delivered my baby at the hospital which meant an awful lot to myself and my partner. We hope to return to Wallingford for baby number 2 in the distant future! As a first time mum, I'd highly recommend this unit!! :)

User

I will most definitely be going back to Wallingford should I have baby number 2! I felt so at home there and Angie came down to deliver my little girl especially as she had been my midwife throughout my pregnancy and I trusted her completely. My labour lasted 19 hours and Matilda was bank to back so it was very painful. I was encouraged to lie in certain positions so that Matilda got into a better birthing position and it worked. After my labour Nicky looked after me and helped me feel very reassured. I also had the most amazing help with my breast feeding. Would definitely recommend Wallingford to anyone! Looking forward to going back!!! X

User

I spent 24 hours here in labour and it was such an amazing experience- I did have to finish off at the jr but was never made to feel worried about the transfer etc. Couldn't have my second here as I had OC but came straight back for a few days. Amazing staff, amazing facilities- can't recommend it enough!!!

User

I had my second baby here in august and I could not have asked for a better experience. The staff were amazing (Heather & Wendy) they made me feel so relaxed and calm I wish I could of stayed there longer. It wasn't just for the labour either the after care I received with breastfeeding was great and has made me breastfeed for longer than I did with my first (still going too) as I felt I had somewhere to turn to for advise whatever the time of day or night was. I will and have recommended Wallingford to all pregnant ladies.

User

I had my daughter Evalyn yesterday at Wallingford and I could not have asked for a better birthing experience. My labour was very quick and intense from the beginning but all through I was reassured by the midwives and given lots of encouragement. After a horrendous experience with my first birth involving tearing and stitches, I was terrified of a repeat but it was incomparable and far less painful. The after care was second to none and I was given endless advice on breastfeeding etc. I had a lovely experience and would recommend Wallingford to anyone who is due to have a baby. I was very sad to leave this morning! A very big thank you to all the lovely ladies!!!

User

I had my baby at the JR but my post natal care was at Wallingford. Both myself and my little girl had some minor post natal complications and the staff at Wallingford were on hand day and night to provide all the help we needed. I was a completely clueless first time mum and the midwives could not have been more helpful. I have nothing but praise and gratitude for the staff at the unit!

User

I gave birth to my second child on Weds at Wallingford and I cannot express enough gratitude to Millie and the whole team. I've had 2 fantastic birth experiences thanks to the way I was looked after. 15 mins after giving birth I was telling the hubby I would like a 3rd!

I wish more people knew about the work these dedicated ladies do and how special they make everything from start to finish.

They also went above and beyond when my community midwifery team forgot to do my post birth visit and remain a constant source of kindness and reassurance.

I really think everyone should birth in a place like this.

Thank you again.

Xxx

I can’t imagine a better birth experience. Staff at Wallingford were fantastic, especially the lovely Linda who delivered our gorgeous little boy!

User

I can't thank the staff at Wallingford maternity unit enough for what they did for me whilst I was there. Unfortunately due to some complications I was taken to the JR but managed to spend a good 8 hours there before and within that time they were amazing. The care they provide really is second to none and the passion and devotion they have really shows in that. They also made my partner and mum so at ease and reassured during our time there. I will never forget my experience and what they did for me at Wallingford.

User

I came back here with my first baby in 1994 and had such good care and felt so well prepared when I went home. Had my second here (in the pool) and it was wonderful. I now have the privilege to occasionally work there and hopefully care for new parents as I was cared for - it is a very special place and Wallingford is extremely fortunate to have it x

User

Fantastic experience. My 4 year old was worried about all the mystery surrounding his mummy going into labour. Kindly the staff at Wallingford were happy for him to come on the tour with us to his delight. This visit really helped to reassure him and must have relaxed me as I went into labour that night. My amazing Abingdon midwife met us at Wallingford and just two hours later I had our lovely baby boy. All our wishes were completely respected and I was able to practice the hypnobirthing I had been learning for the last few months. After labouring though the night we then moved onto the ward in the early hours and myself and husband were encouraged to rest. It was very refreshing that we were looked after as a family and not just as mother and baby like my previous experience at the JR. I would recommend to everyone and feel extremely privileged to have been able to have this positive and empowering birthing experience.
