Congratulations to our cancer services colleagues who have been recognised at this year’s ‘Recovery Package Annual Conference’ hosted by Macmillan Cancer Support.
In May of this year, Walsall staff were able to demonstrate to other midlands cancer services the Trust’s efforts around aiding recovery for cancer survivors, empowering them to manage their own care and improving their experience by reducing unnecessary appointments/admissions to hospital. Moving testimonies from patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease have been collated in a new photo book as part of a project that our Respiratory Consultant Dr Max Matonhodze has been involved in.
Dr Matonhodze said: “Black Country Lungs has given patients a voice; it was their chance to speak up and tell us all how life is with COPD. And life with COPD is debilitating, it is heartbreaking."

Walsall Manor Hospital’s Emergency Department is very busy and people are experiencing long waits. Please avoid ED unless you have life-threatening or serious conditions so that our teams can prioritise those most in need as quickly as possible.
You can get expert health advice by telephoning NHS 111, speaking to your local pharmacist, or contacting your GP practice.
Walsall Healthcare has a Rapid Response Service that deals with referrals for patients who have conditions s...uch as a Urinary Tract Infection, chest infection, dehydration and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) . The team will respond within two hours and set up multi-disciplinary care as appropriate, avoiding a hospital visit. This service can be accessed via a GP (in or out of hours), the Ambulance Service or NHS 111.
And Walsall has two urgent care centres, run by Primecare, for people with non life-threatening illnesses. The urgent care centre at Saddlers Shopping Centre, Bridgeman Street, is open 8am-8pm every day and the urgent care centre at the Manor Hospital is open from 7am-midnight every day.

Don't they look fab! Congratulations to our AMU staff - Lauren, Helen, Courtney, Sarah, Denice and Sam - who took part in Saturday’s 5k Colour Rush obstacle course.
They raised just under £300 for St Giles Hospice.
... Team members have all suffered a loss due to cancer and wanted to give something back to St Giles for the support received.

We couldn't disagree with the CQC rating for the maternity department more right now. The care we have had especially for Aston-Lee and Shaz has been nothing less than outstanding since we all went there in the very early hours of Monday morning. From the initial telephone call, to the assessments, to the continual care and monitoring, to the delivery and to the neo-natal procedures they have done nothing less than the very best for Shaz and our little baby boy. Plus everything else we have seen on the periphary with regards to others has also been spot on.

Today, I attended A+E with my mom who had badly burnt her face, neck and chest at work.

As she had a wet towel draped over face to cool down the burns, I registered her at the reception.

I initially spoke to a nurse on the front desk and I explained the injuries my mom sustained. The nurse promptly alerted a receptionist who registered my mom and then immediately led us into the A+E department.

It was extremely busy and clearly everyone was under pressure. Regardless of this we were greeted by the NIC SSr Becky who delegated my moms care to another nurse.

The nurse was extremely friendly, assessed my moms injuries, dressed them and gave after advice all within 30 minutes. My mom was reassured and remained relaxed due to the attentiveness of the nurse.

Thank you so very much for taking care of my mom. You were all absolutely fabulous.

Paramedic from the manor hospital saved my life back in January 2015 .I owe that man my life .The manor hospital doctors took care of me till I was rushed in to New cross heart centre Amazing places Thank god for NHS most of all thank God for that beautiful paramedic .

User

Our family experienced first hand the emergency department at its best. The staff communicated to us throughout, were empathetic and showed our mother complete respect and dignity. The NHS is often criticised but we would be lost without it. Thank you to all the staff.

User

My son Joseph is in and out of ward 21, but this week one nurse in particular has been outstanding! Lucy has done everything in her power to make sure my son has received all the best care and treatments, even going out of her way when we aren't in hospital to get appointments sorted for us. We can not thank ward 21 for everything over the last 18 months. But especially the nurses such as Lucy and Abbey they are amazing! Thank you again for everything xx

User

Just a little message to say thank you for looking after my son the last few days, who suffered two broken bones in he's forearm. He was seen with 10 minutes of arriving at A&E, x-ray ed and placed with in a cast within 30 minutes. Operated on following day, and out today.

Your staff are very caring, and go beyond there duties, a credit to the NHS. The only criticism I have that it took 3 hours to arrange transfer from the A&E department to the childrens ward, no fault of either department, just waiting for doctor to sign him over.

User

I have received a lot of treatment at this hospital and have always been looked after well.

Yesterday I was at the Surgical Day Unit and had the most positive experience whilst there, well cared for with dignity and respect for which I am most grateful.

A member of staff apologised for me not being taken to a ward for a bed , this was not a problem to me as I had been very comfortable where I was and looked after very well. I have nothing but the highest praise for every member of staff.

With heartfelt thanks and extreme gratitude to you all xxxx

I had my little boy here on Thursday and my experience was nothing but positive, the midwives and drs were absolutely amazing, I couldn't thank them enough! Their positivity and encouragement really helped me through a difficult and tough labour! Thank you so much once again to all the wonderful, kind and caring staff I had the pleasure of coming across

Had my baby girl 12 weeks ago at the Manor. I must say I was a bit worried hearing some experiences that people have had of the Manor but I could not fault mine whatsoever. We had the most AMAZING midwife called Nash, she was so brilliant and supportive throughout the whole of my labour. Our baby girl fell quite poorly after she arrived so we ended up in Neonatal, Primrose, Foxtrot and the Transitional Unit during our stay. We must’ve met all of the maternity unit staff! But for everyone who cared for us, thank you so so much. You are all incredible and do such a brilliant job.

User

Big thank you to all staff at A and E, yesterday afternoon Saturday 14 July, kind, caring and attentive. An extra thank you to the two doctors who took my moms chest infection seriously, sorry I didn't get your names (male doctor with connections to Brace Street surgery and female doctor wearing deep green top), you were quick and efficient but caring, and answered all of our questions. Final thank you to the ambulance staff who didn't fob us off, as it was a chest infection that was diagnosed as pneumonia, I'm very thankful for your help

User

As a member of staff working at Walsall manor I can truly say the A&E staff who looked after me this week were beyond fantastic! The department had 69 patients waiting to be treated ! To all the nurses and doctors who took care of me u should be proud ! You work so hard and do not get the recognition you all deserve ! Thank you is not enough

User

As a member of community staff working for the trust I just want to say a massive thank you to all on cardiac intervention suite for the wonderful treatment and looking after me so well today, special thanks to Carly, Maxine and Simon! People are always quick to judge the manor but couldn’t of asked for better service today credit where’s credits due

I cannot knock this hospital to be really honest.. there is a few minor things that need looking into regarding waiting for operations & some appointments, but they saved my life in June 2017!

Thanks so much to all the team in Resuscitation , A&E , HDU, AMU & Ward 16.

I was a patient for nearly two weeks when I was blue lighted in with bilateral pneumonia & a severe infection caused by overdose of general anaesthetic & a reaction to latex in the glue used to close my wounds from a major operation & a problem with a huge haematoma the previous day.

U all do an amazing job.. each & every one of u. I admire u all!

User

Great stroke team!!! Amazing support network on ward one to help with my recovery. Dr Javaid team was spot on!

Gynaecology department always been very helpful.

Urology department not so helpful && not having a permanent neurologist let's it down

AMU department is very busy and when my grandad was in they said they couldn't provide the care for him as he needed more one on one so they went him to a ward where there was an even bigger staff shortage. Bit of a shambles on AMU

My mom was admitted to hospital with pneumonia over the weekend. She was taken by ambulance to A&E, she received great care from the ambulance and in A&E was seen very quickly. She had x rays, blood tests, was seen by a fantastic gp, a great junior doctor and then a senior doctor. We couldn't fault their professionalism and care. She was then admitted to AMU. On the whole the nurses and care assistants were caring, thoughtful and professional. Again couldn't speak highly enough of most of them. However, over the last 2 days my mom had some horrible experiences. She was bedridden for days, drifting in and out of sleep, pneumonia knocks the healthiest people never mind a 70 year old whose immune system is incredibly low. On one occasion my mom needed help to get to the loo, the nurse replied with "I'm not breaking my back." On another occasion when my mom needed help to go to the loo again a nurse responded with "how do you manage at home." This morning my mom couldn't see her shoes to get to the loo and asked a staff nurse to look under the bed. The staff nurse glanced towards the bed and said she couldn't see them and my mom had to walk to the bathroom barefoot where the floor in the bathroom was soaking wet. The shoes were under the bed and easily seen.if the staff nurse had bothered to look. This is disgraceful service from nhs staff, if you don't care about people then you shouldn't work for the nhs. We will be putting in a formal complaint but I can not believe this behaviour is allowed and these uncaring cruel nurses get away with this. I've always spoken highly of the nhs and I hope this isn't a trend now. If any family members go to AMU, I would keep a close eye on how they are treated.

It is no wonder people get sick in hospital. In the last two days I have witnessed....

Having a cap put on my cannula a second nurse dived in to help the nurse doing it Even though nurse 1 was doing a grand job, just a slight leak before it was tightened fully. Nurse 2 who was not wearing gloves, to my horror, promptly opened the cap by turning the cap the wrong way, spraying fresh blood over her bare hands and the uniform of nurse 1, who I saw some hours later still wearing the same blood stained tunic.

Today I trotted off to the toilet (pun totally intentional) as I was getting out of bed the chap in the next bed was having his cannula capped to go for a scan. On my return his bedside table was in my way so I slid it to one side. As I went to climb in I noticed blood on my fingertips. I looked back around at the table and lo and behold there was blood all over the surface. I hadn't touched the top of the table so I got a tissue and ran it under the edge. You guessed it, blood under the top of the table too.

After 30 years tattooing it honestly made me feel ill that these "professionals" don't understand the transmission dangers of pathogens in blood

My sister, Josephine Baddeley, elderly, blind, disabled an amputee, was sent home from this hospital last night having been deprived of food and fluids, on ward 15, and in worse health that when she was admitted. Sent home in a taxi in just her nightdress, not even a sock or a slipper on her only foot. The family wanted her home because they felt that the hospital were not caring for her. This morning her carers have reported that she is covered in bruises' Pinch marks. !!!What kind of staff in in your employ? Does not the elderly and infirm deserve better treatment? Are they not worthy, is it all about targets? Is this the way this hospital performs.
