Scary times are on the way... Our Children's Book of the Month for October will be the super spooky Last Chance Hotel. If you like magic, murder, mystery, and mayhem, then this is the book for you.
We also invite our younger customers to join us during half term for Halloween shenanigans. Who can design the best vampire? Dare you take part in our ghostly treasure hunt? Can you invent a ghoulish book?

We had a great time today enjoying the fun and entertainment at the Big Malarkey Festival. We met some wonderful customers, writers and authors.
The best thing about it is that we get to do it all again tomorrow! We hope to see you there.

Austin was really pleased to get his copy of the Land of Green Ginger book signed by Katy Riddell, who did the fantastic illustrations.

A bit of advance notice.
We are really pleased to be supporting Hull and East Yorkshire Sands throughout the month of June. They work tirelessly to help people who have been affected by the loss of a baby.

We're starting our staff recommendations up again. Here's a sneaky peak at our first batch.

The Hate U Give has just won the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, and if you've read it you'll completely understand why.
It's a hard-hitting fictional account of racial tension, gang violence, and police brutality in modern day America. It could barely be more topical. The narrator (and hero of the book), Starr, lives in what she calls 'the ghetto' but goes to school in an affluent area. She leads two lives. She's the sole witness to a particularly unpleasant incident whi...ch causes the pressure in her neighbourhood to reach breaking point. This leads to unpredictable and violent consequences.
The subject matter is tough at times, but it's counterbalanced by a really lovely reminder of the importance of family and friendships, and that the love between parents and children, between siblings, and between friends, can help in even the darkest of times.
Though aimed at the Young Adult market, we thoroughly recommend this to older adults too!

Cancel any plans you've got for tomorrow evening (Friday 16 March at 6:30pm), and come to our shop instead. Cathi Unsworth will be in conversation with Nick Quantrill talking about her new book, That Old Black Magic. The book contains a heady mix of magic and murder in wartime Britain.
Cathi has connections with Hull - and has written about it previously - and Nick is no stranger to Hull-based crime fiction, so it's safe to assume the conversation will meander onto the topic... at some point.
There is no charge for this event.

We are really pleased to welcome Cathi Unsworth to our shop on Friday 16th March at 6.30pm. She will in conversation with Nick Quantrill, and will be talking about her latest novel, That Old Black Magic. Longlisted for the prestigious Theakstons Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year award, her novel offers magic, mayhem and murder in wartime England. Always writing about the darker side of life, learn about Cathi's links with Hull, and hear how our city inspired her earlier work, The Singer

Thank you to everyone who came to visit us today, especially all the children with their World Book Day vouchers. We had a great time, and we hope you did too.
Thank you also to the amazing authors, Kristyna Litten and Sarah Howard, who took time out of their busy schedules to spend it with us. We really appreciated it, and hope to welcome you back soon.

The upstairs carpet is lovely for children to crawl on. My 10 month old had a whale of a time and didn't nearly get stepped on once. Book readers are a very stationary bunch.

Popped in with my little boy yesterday for a treat and he wasn't disappointed! Beautiful rainbow cake for him and coffee and carrot cake for me all delicious and lovely friendly helpful staff and very comfortable relaxing environment I will definitely be going back.

User

Lovely relaxing place to drink coffee , oh and buy books too!!

User

Lovely helpful coffee shop team. Popped in for some books for my 11 week old daughter, who suddenly decided she needed feeding. Went up to the cafe (first ever visit) for a brew & a quiet corner to feed, and the cafe team kindly offered me a free cuppa as I was breastfeeding.

Really nice to be able to feed my daughter in such a relaxed and calm public environment, made the experience far better for both of us. The coffee was wonderful and having a comfy place to sit and feed was definitely appreciated. Looking forward to our next visit!

I think Waterstones, Hull is an absolute Godsend. Without whom I would very likely be lost, what I mean by that statement is that my Wife is a voracious reader of Historical fiction amongst other topics (Philippa Gregory is one of her favorite Authors) Thanks mainly to Waterstones I am able to constantly supply a steady stream of reading materials to ensure a happy Wife & subsequently a very happy marriage.

Clean and well stocked. Friendly staff..............................

I took my daughter one Saturday After noon we had a coffee and spent a couple of hours looking through the books before we decided to buy the book we wanted. I would have said it was like been in book heaven. We had a lovely time I would recommend it to any book fan.

User

I got thrown out of Waterstones book shop today. Apparently putting Kate McCanns book into the murder mystery section was not the right thing to do.

User
