Pioneering feminist, activist and bestselling author, Laura Bates will be joining us in store to discuss her latest work, Misogynation, with Hannah Beckerman.
Misogynation is the latest collection of essays from the revered author of Everyday Sexism and Girl Up. From Weinstein to Westminster, the recent sexual harassment and assault allegations have led to a renewed prominence to discussions of consent, coercion and misogyny in many forms. In this collection of essays, origi...nally published in the Guardian, Laura Bates explores patriarchal structures and modes of sexism that exist in our relationships, our workplaces, our media, our homes and on our streets. One hundred years since some women were first given the right to vote, Bates’ work explores the extent to which gender inequality continues to undergird contemporary social life.
Laura Bates will be in conversation with Hannah Beckerman. Hannah is the author of The Dead Wife’s Handbook, and an upcoming new novel If Only I Could Tell You. She also works as a freelance journalist, contributing to The Observer, the Financial Times Weekend Magazine, and The Sunday Express, and has judged numerous book prizes, including the Costa Book Awards.

JOHNNY is nineteen. He likes music, art and going to the beach. He is also autistic – he will probably never get a job, never have a girlfriend, never leave home. And over the last nineteen years this is what his father, TV producer, broadcaster and comedy writer Henry Normal and his wife Angela have been trying to come to terms with.
There are around 700,000 people on the autism spectrum in the UK – that's more than 1 in 100. If you include their families, autism is a part ...of daily life for 2.8 million people.
This is a book for anyone whose life has been touched by autism – Henry and Angela take alternate chapters to tell the story of the hope, the despair and the messy, honest, sometimes very funny day to day world it brings – as well as being an uplifting, warm, tender and optimistic book about an unconditional, unconventional love between a father, a mother and a son.

We’ll be welcoming A.J. Finn, Ruth Ware and Stephanie Merritt in store, in a discussion of the new generation of authors working in the psychological thriller genre.
The psychological thriller has come to dominate the bestsellers lists, reshaping the landscape of fiction. Likened to thrillers, and to crime, the genre carves its own path of pacey, gripping narrative, with psychological and emotional depth and realism. Finn, Ware and Merritt will be discussing the new directio...ns the genre is taking, and the possibilities that the form allows for.
The Woman in the Window is the debut of A.J. Finn. An engrossing reimagining of Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Finn’s novel is an expertly paced psychological thriller that is already being likened to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. Having already been picked up to be made into a major motion picture, The Woman in the Window is both a well-wrought, swiftly paced thriller, and a more penetrating, earnest account of grief, trauma and resilience.
Joining AJ Finn in store, is Ruth Ware. Ruth is known for In a Dark, Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10. Her latest novel, The Lying Game, is a ‘gripping, unpredictable narrative that shifts like sand underfoot, and a plot that turns like the tide.’
Chairing the event, will be Stephanie Merritt. Perhaps best known for her work in historical fiction, as S.J. Parris, Stephanie has recently moved into the realm of psychological thrillers. While You Sleep is a ‘fantastically entertaining, yet deeply unsettling read,’ exploring grief and sexuality, in a haunting work of fiction.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED For more information, or to arrange a refund on your ticket, please contact events.piccadilly@waterstones.com
We’re thrilled to announce that Matthew Weiner will be joining us to discuss his debut work of fiction, Heather, The Totality, with Joe Haddow.
... Renowned for the creation of Mad Men, and his work on The Sopranos, Matthew’s forensic eye and extraordinary character work carry over from his work in television into his first work of fiction. Sharp and interrogative, Weiner examines power privilege on a familial level, whilst simultaneously addressing broader social structures.
The Breakstone family arrange themselves around their daughter Heather, and the world seems to follow: beautiful, compassionate, entrancing, she is the greatest blessing in their lives of Manhattan luxury. But as Heather grows - and her empathy sharpens to a point, and her radiance attracts more and more dark interest - their perfect existence starts to fracture. Meanwhile a very different life, one raised in poverty and in violence, is beginning its own malign orbit around Heather.
”Heather, The Totality is a tour de force of control, tone and razor-slash insight. In its clear-eyed anatomist’s gaze and its remarkable combination of empathy and pitilessness I hear echoes of Flaubert and Richard Yates, with a deeply twisted twist of Muriel Spark at her darkest. I could not put it down” Michael Chabon
This event will be chaired by the host of the Man Booker Prize podcast, Joe Haddow.
Please join us for what promises to be a truly special event.
“Heather, The Totality is superb. It gripped me at once. There was no question of turning away at any point. Weiner conveys the sense that beyond the brilliantly chosen details there was a wealth of similarly truthful social and psychological perception unstated. Then there was the ice-cold mercilessness, of a kind that reminded me (oddly, I suppose, but there it was) of Evelyn Waugh. This novel is something special” Philip Pullman

We visited your store on Friday 2nd June with our teenage granddaughter, to attend Connor Franta's book signing event. She has autism and finds it difficult to cope with heat, noise, crowds and unusual situations but desperately wanted to see Connor. The staff Waterstones were amazing, when we explained the situation they took her inside to a quiet area and later called her to the front of the queue to see her idol.Unfortunately the screaming fans sent her into meltdown and we had to take her out.She was devistated! Having travelled up from Cornwall, coped with escalators and the underground, the heat and London crowds she felt it was all for nothing...... but again Waterstones to the rescue.... they called her back and she met Connor and had a beautiful photograph taken with him, one that she will treasure for a long time .Thank you Waterstones ,Piccadilly you were amazing xx

Waterstones Piccadilly is a magical place for every book lover! It is a huge, beautiful home for so many books. I was surprised at the wonderful staff - so polite and helpful to everyone which is not easy when there are so many people around. Thanks!

User

WOW! Great staff. I had 4 books I needed and not a lot of time. They went above and beyond normal customer service skills. They guided me to the right sections. They also found the hard to find Norwegian thriller by Hans Olav Lahlum that had just come in but had yet to make the shelves! THANKS!

User

Thankyou so much to Ed from the events team for replying to my email so promptly,I was sent a friendly reassuring response to my queries

User

Thank you so much to Dan and the crew who helped with my son with additional needs for the Tim Peake book signing today outstanding service from Dan. Your security guy in the grey suit may need addressing as very heavy handed with a few elderly customers simply trying to buy books and very rude to a polite staff member cutting off the bands clearly no need. But the rest of the guys and publishing staff awesome well done .

User

Staff excellent. Very helpful indeed

I was at the tom hanks book signing. I use a walking stick and a member of staff saw me and asked if I wanted to use the lift I was worried I might lose my place in the queue but it was ok all I had to do was remember who I was behind and in front of. I went in the lift with the lady and when we got to the next floor she asked me if I wanted to sit down while I was waiting for my place which I did. Then another member of staff asked if I was ok and if I was being attended to which I said I was and was waiting for my place in the queue. Once it came to joining the queue again the second lady asked if I wanted to go with her and see tom before everyone else but I was happy to stand and wait for my turn. The lady kept coming back to see if I was ok which I was and then finally I got to meet tom. He is my favourite actor has been ever since I was at primary school. I had waited 20+ years to meet him and he was lovely and so down to earth. I had an amazing time and the two members of staff that looked after me were brilliant. Thankyou for making my childhood dream come true

User

I think you can find every kind book at this bookseller place.

I liked to be there.

I held a meet the author event on the evening of 7th July. The booking was easy enough but the team took a bit of time to reply to email because they were really busy. At the event they couldn't be more friendly and helpful and I will definitely do a follow up event here at some point. Thank you Waterstones Piccadilly circus x

User

Fanflippingtastic! Bright, clean, crisp, fresh. Well laid out. Looks well maintained. Nice flow to each floor, easy to walk around, even on a busy Saturday. And so many books. Amazing. Thank you x

User

Epic book shop. Roughly 2 billion food books. Which is good.

User

The staff looked after my grandson, who has autism, very well at the book signing with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler on 11 Nov. There was one staff member who was a little 'jobs worth' but on the whole a good experience all round. The store is huge, next time I visit I'm heading for the lounge and bar area for a sit down and read of whatever book I buy!

User

Great book signing with Tim Peake but my god don't que people outside with young kids in the snow as you were not ready at 12 noon.

Poor planning which was made up for with free hot chocolate and sweets

Apart from the above great fun and my daughter loved speaking to tim and credit to him for starting few minutes early.

User

I went to Bruce Dickinson's book signing and the staff were nice and meeting Bruce was excellent. But had an issue with my camera which I fixed in like 2 seconds but the staff were like you have to move on and when collecting my bag they were like you can't stay sir. Pissed that I did not get a picture with Bruce.
