Warner discusses historical figures such as Edmund Langley, Edward III’s fourth son, who founded the House of York in 1385 and whose son, Edward, was killed at Agincourt in 1415.
Tickets are £3 each, or £20 to include a copy of the book. Tickets will be on sale from Tuesday 11th September.

Join us for a fascinating evening, as Susan Vincent discusses her beautiful new book, Hair - An Illustrated History.
Bobs, beards, blondes and beyond, Hair takes us on a lavishly illustrated journey into the world of this remarkable substance and our complicated and fascinating relationship with it. Taking the key things we do to it in turn, this book captures its importance in the past and into the present: to individuals and society, for health and hygiene, in social and p...olitical challenge, in creating ideals of masculinity and womanliness, in being a vehicle for gossip, secrets and sex.
Using art, film, personal diaries, newspapers, texts and images, Susan J. Vincent unearths the stories we have told about hair and why they are important. From ginger jibes in the seventeenth century to bobbed-hair suicides in the 1920s, from hippies to Roundheads, from bearded women to smooth metrosexuals, Hair shows the significance of the stuff we nurture, remove, style and tend. You will never take it for granted again.
Tickets - £3 each or £22.99 to include a copy of the book

User

best book shop ever! Luv the atmosphere, the staff, and the selection in terms of literature! Shame I can't make the student lock-in

User

What a great shop. Tables all around laden with delights and easily accessible for browsing. Teenage fiction a bit hemmed in according to my daughters

User

Visited this branch yesterday, and it's great. The décor is so much better than the old store and it's got that lovely bookshop feel about it. The stock range is great and it was lovely to see a good pile of Kate Ellis books there.

The staff are friendly and interested in what you are buying, can't wait to visit again.

User

Popped in to the cafe today with my family and half way through my 7 year old son said he wasn't feeling well, unfortunately we only made it half way across the store when his lunch come back up! I didn't get the name of the man that helped me but just wanted to say a huge thank you for helping me and for offering to clean it up. Thank you

User

Love it, happily spend hours in this shop browsing books for the whole family.

User

Just want to say my family and I come over to York once or twice every year from the Lakes and always I feel right at home here. The decor is wonderful, the staff are so helpful and great to talk with, and there's something new to see (probably in the SF/F section, my usual haunt) every time. Thanks again for so many wonderful memories in York!

P.S. the simple fact that the cafe exists and it has falafel is a win for me.

User

I think Waterstones is a lovely cozy place for all ages and of course, you cant beat a cuppa with a book now can you? Lovel cafe, amazing range of all types and genres of books. I love his shop the best!

User

Great place to go .Love shopping for books there .Then off to Waterstones cafe for a Cream tea and a relaxing sit down at very good prices

User

Great bookshop, well laid out, good offers, lovely cafe and in York, what more do I need to say. A regular place to pop into on trips into the city for a Browse shop and coffee. Perfect antidote on a day trawling around the other shops.

User

First time Ive been in the cafe. Great coffee, lovely surroundings and friendly staff. Will definitely make it my cafe of choice when I visit York in future

User

But bookshop in York. Also the cafe is worth a visit

User

Brilliant range & helpful staff. Ordered what I wanted as they had sold the last copy & posted to my home. Also advised on alternatives. Paula in particular was very helpful & the coffee in the cafe hit the spot!

User

Big up the guy who pulled an absolute blinder and got me to buy a whole set of books that I wanted but was going to save for a different day.

A* customer service though, and was great to chat to cool staff who know about books and are happy to recommend things!

User

A massive thankyou to the member of staff who read my little girl a book yesterday whilst I cleaned up an accident she'd had (said staff did offer to clean it up but I insisted) She's not stopped talking about how lovely you were and the great book you both read. She loves books 😊 The staff in waterstones are always fantastic and yesterday's experience has only enhanced that!! Thankyou!! Xx

User

Nice place to have a coffee and nice coffee too. Can get crowded at lunch and the staff, though very nice, not always enough at busy times (it's obviously a "model" as same in other W cafes). Overall very pleasant - nice ambience

User

I visited the cafe, food was good and everywhere was clean and tidy. The toilets were a let down as there was only one for both sexes. I would probably visit again for a snack and drink.

User

For a city like York with so many chain stores maybe I was expecting something larger. The cafe was nice with its own cabaret of a mother trying to control two children and failing.

User

Fabulous shop and coffee shop only spoilt by a member of staff who was a thick as the wooden tables in the cafe sometimes you have to think outside the box

User

The bookshop is fantastic but sadly staff are very slow in the cafe. For the second time now we have ordered toasted teacakes. 15 mins after taking our order they hadn't arrived. They then delivered just 1 of the teacakes so by the time mine had arrived my friend had finished hers! This is the second time this has happened. We will continue to visit but sincerely hope the service improves.
