Avoid being a victim of online auction scams
Online auction sites are regularly targeted by fraudsters advertising desirable items for sale which are below market value, but do not exist. Fraudsters use a variety of techniques to persuade the potential buyer that the item is genuine and that any advanced payment will be protected or reimbursed should the product be faulty or not received.
Protect yourself: ... • Stay within the auction guidelines stipulated on the website. • Payments made via bank transfer, money transfer or e-money are not protected, should you not receive the item. • View the item in person if possible. • If the item advertised seems too good to be true, it probably is.
IF YOU NEED TO REPORT A FRAUD PLEASE CONTACT ACTION FRAUD ON 0300 123 2040 OR USING THE ACTION FRAUD REPORTING TOOL VIA THE ACTION FRAUD WEBSITE - http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/

Thames Valley Police and communities are working together to make the roads safer in Wycombe.
CSW is a locally driven initiative where members of the local community work in partnership with police to monitor the speeds of vehicles using a speed indication device (SID), on roads that have a 20 mph, 30 mph or 40 mph posted speed limit. If drivers are going above the speed limit the SID’ sign is activated and displays the vehicle’s speed or the speed limit as a warning.
... The number plate is noted by volunteers and passed to police who write to motorists offering speed safety advice and reminding them to stick to the limit.
In Buckinghamshire a total of 5,148 letters were sent to drivers in 2014. Of those 4,279 letters, 86 per cent, were issued following CSW work in the High Wycombe rural neighbourhood policing area.
CSW is the police’s first tier of response to speed related issues on certain roads. If motorists receive three letters in six months they are visited by a police officer who reinforces the need for road safety.
CSW data on the number of speeding vehicles is also used to determine the deployment of road safety camera vans.
PC Lee Turnham, of Princes Risborough Neighbourhood Policing Team, is the High Wycombe Rural Neighbourhood Teams CSW lead.
He said: “It is very positive that members of the local community are working in partnership with the police on road safety initiatives like Community Speed Watch. CSW scheme and make a contribution to road safety.”
For more information about Community Speed Watch contact PC Lee Turnham by email lee.turnham@thamesvalley.pnn.police. uk or via the Thames Valley Police non emergency number 101.

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses after 19 thefts and one attempted theft from motor vehicles in the High Wycombe and Marlow areas, between 8 December and 13 January. All 20 of the incidents are being linked.
Tools were stolen from parked Ford Transit panel vans in all but one of the incidents. There was no sign of forced entry in any of the incidents.
The attempted theft involved a Vauxhall Vivaro but no entry was gained and nothing was taken.
... The advice from Thames Valley Police to owners of Ford Transit vans is, if they can, to remove tools from their vehicles overnight. If that is not possible, make sure the van is parked in as safe and well-lit an area as possible.
Tools should also be marked in some way and any serial numbers recorded, so the tools can be returned if they are recovered.
Anyone with information about this incident should contact investigating officer Det Con Timmis via the 24-hour enquiry line 101.
Or if you do not want to speak directly to the police you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers (opens new window) anonymously on 0800 555 111. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.

NSPCC #ShareAware campaign
Many parents feel out of their depth in understanding what their children are doing online and what the risks might be.
This campaign is aimed at parents and carers of children aged 8-12, and is a good tool to help with understanding what children like to get up to online, that will certainly help parents to have those difficult conversations with children about staying safe.
... There is a downloadable Share Aware guide for parents that has three main purposes: • to provide an overview of sites, apps and games that children and young people use from a user-perspective; • to give parents the confidence to facilitate balanced and informed conversations about what their children are doing online; and • to encourage parents to look at social networking platforms themselves and form their own views about the appropriateness of popular sites for their children. See http://www.net-aware.org.uk/ and http://ow.ly/Hi4wn for helpful advice

Did you get some great presents for Christmas? Have you security marked them yet?
If you were lucky enough to receive a new SMART phone, MP3 player, bike, satellite navigation system or any other valuables over Christmas, remember it is vital to security mark these items and make a note of their make and any serial numbers.
These are not only popular gift ideas but also very popular with thieves; so a little time spent making them secure and keeping a record – is time well... spent! In the unfortunate event your valuables are stolen, security marking will make it much more likely you will get your property back.
There are a variety of marking techniques available:
A simple ultraviolet pen or permanent marker can be used to mark items with your postcode and house number.
More forensic methods include Selecta DNA or Smartwater. Both of these involve marking your possession with a solution that contains a unique DNA code which can be registered to your property. Conveniently if you choose to move house, this code can be re‐registered to your new address.
For tools or outdoor items there is also CREmark. Here you write your postcode and house number, but a protective lacquer is applied over the top to make it more durable.
Finally, it’s important to remember to register your personal property on the FREE National Property Register website www.immobilise.co.uk
Contact Wycombe District Neighbourhood Watch Association if you are interested in finding out more:- 01494 421117 or email publicitywdnhwa@hotmail.co.uk

Thames Valley police are warning motorists locally to be vigilant after scam alert in Surrey
TO BE AWARE:
Surrey Police are warning motorists to remain vigilant, following a recent spate of people being conned into giving money for petrol. The suspects pretend to be drivers in need.
... The first incident was reported to Surrey Police on Thursday, 6 November. The victim, a 64-year-old man from Walton-on-Thames, had been driving in Esher, when he was flagged down by the suspects, stating they needed cash for fuel. He gave them £20 cash, in exchange for three gold rings. The suspects promised to repay the money and gave the victim a business card.
The rings are in fact worthless and the business card a fake.
The 2 suspects are described as smartly dressed, dark skinned, possibly of Arabic origin, large build around 40 / 50 years old. The car close by – ‘which has run out of petrol’ – is a black Mercedes saloon.
Two further incidents took place on Saturday 15th November
If anything like this happens to you, please get the car index number, stall them and phone the police from your mobile instantly on 999
Can everyone be on their guard and report anyone hanging around / anything suspicious to the police on the 101 number.
