About Weather Safe Ltd

Agriculture meets big data.
See further. Know earlier. Act quicker.

Weather Safe Ltd Description

WeatherSafe provides remote management information, intelligence and solutions for agricultural and food supply chain stakeholders.

We combine targeted hyper-local weather data, pest and disease monitoring, best practice farming modeling and high-resolution satellite and on-the-ground data to deliver a complete supply chain solution that provides significant value to farmers, Governments, NGOs and others.

Our solutions are provided through applications that are available on a range of devices.

40% of the world's population wakes up each morning and engages in farming. The UN predicts that current growth in population in emerging markets, income growth, industrialization and urbanization are behind fundamental shifts in farming.

Increased wealth goes hand in hand with lower birth rates, but not so with food consumption. So as these emerging markets exhibit huge population growth and become more industrialised, such growth has to be placed alongside the demands of an already existing population. Food output may have to increase 60% by 2050 or in less than 40 years just to meet demand.

Farming also faces an ageing work force and insufficient new workers and now unprecedented demand capped by climate change effects.

This time around, the revolution is not about finding fields or rotating crops or concentrating production. It has to be about technology to use existing land and resources to a level never before envisioned, organised or achieved or in one word, radical.

Today, we have already produced more data than has ever existed in our history. And for the first time technological advancements in Big Data and data science will define, mitigate and eliminate these new pressures.

We are now able through Big Data technology to effectively utilise human knowledge, experience and learning unlike at anytime in our history.

Through advancements of processing power and predictive and analytical mathematics, we can interrogate these large data sets to both predict what can occur with precision and provide effective solutions in advance of actuality. With today's mobile communications, we can deliver them directly to those who need it, where they need it and in a manner and with the frequency that they desire.

One of our great achievements over the next decade will be to accomplish all of this across geographies and crops. We need to manage crops better, yield more of what is required and then to a higher quality for an ever growing and demanding population.

It is exactly this challenge that so excites WeatherSafe to be tackling the “Big One”.

Our initial target market is coffee, which is the second most valuable traded commodity in the world after oil. Nearly half of the world's production is from subsistence farmers within specific areas where farms are scattered widely.

Coffee growing can be negatively affected by environmental issues, further compounded by climatic change, lack of readily accessible information, inadequate decision-making and response to crisis management.

WeatherSafe has started in Rwanda, which is known for its high quality specialty coffee; however, every year up to 50% of the coffee crop is lost because of damage caused by three major pests and diseases

Slight variations in climate have vast effects on production; Guatemala lost 40% of its 2013 crop to coffee leaf rust (CLR), a disease that could decimate Central American coffee. Management practices varies almost farm to farm, and access to remote areas where coffee grows makes standardization a logistical challenge.

At the recent CLR Emergency Summit in Guatemala City, the world’s leading experts and main coffee supply chain stakeholders emphasised the lack of a long-term solutions for the problems affecting the industry. Highly technical, need-driven applications have been identified as a major source of help in addressing the issues, mitigating the impact of climate change, advancing pest management and improving the economics of this industry.

WeatherSafe acknowledges today’s situation as a global call-to-action to address the increasing demands for more resilient and profitable agricultural sectors.
