Evening folks :-) So bird nesting season is pretty much over and so now for the redundant nest removals... This was from 2 bedrooms this morning. If your appliance smokes back into the room when lighting it for the first time this season and you don't have a bird guard fitted, you may just have a nest.

User

First one of the season! (Wood)warm & toasty :-)

Those pesky birds... I can't believe how many bird nests I have been removing of late (all nests vacated I hasten to add!) As the cooler nights approach and you start thinking about lighting a fire, my advice to you is if it's the first time you're attempting to use your appliance (open fire/ stove) since the spring then keep in mind if your chimney pot is not protected by a bird guard then there is a possibility you may have had a visit from our feathered friends. My advice ...is to have your flue checked/swept prior to using after a lengthy period of inactivity, to potentially avoid a room filled with smoke due a blocked flue caused by nesting birds. If you do decide you want to have a fire, try a carry out a quick safety test by lighting just a small amount of kindling/newspaper and check the smoke issues from the pot. If it does, you're generally safe to proceed. If it doesn't you may have a blockage. Remember, a Well swept flue is a clean, safe flue!

ATTENTION: THATCHED PROPERTY OWNERS.
If you live in a Thatched property and use a Wood burning or Multi-Fuel appliance, or even an open fire, this is a very important read for you. Also attached are links to both the full report and the Guidance document.

Have you tested your Carbon Monoxide Alarm lately?
Even though you may not be using your appliance, it's still good to get in the habit of regularly testing your alarm to make sure it still works!
Dont have one? PLEASE install one as they are life-savers as Carbon Monoxide is know as the 'Silent Killer' as you can't see it or smell it.
... The pic of the room shows you where a C.O alarm/detector can be installed
Please stay safe! Jamie, the Sweep

Morning Folks, With the burning season just around the corner, now is the best time to get make sure your flues are clean, your appliances serviced and your fuel stocked-up. Here's my quick 5-step guide to a successful, and safe, burning season :-)
#1 – Book Your Sweep Now... Every live flue should be swept a minimum of once a year, regardless of how little it has been used. Sweeps get very busy at this time of year and you could end up waiting weeks if you leave it, so it’s important you book in a date as early as possible.
#2 – Get Your Appliance Serviced Stoves and fires take a lot of punishment in the winter months, so get it serviced now. This means having the rope seals around the doors replaced if needed, and any cracked glass or internal bricks should be replaced. Making sure your rope and glass are in good order will ensure that excess air doesn’t get into the appliance, causing it to over-fire (wasting fuel and potentially damaging your stove). Bricks should be in good order to protect the outer skin of your appliance and keeping the risk of it cracking to a minimum.
#3 – Buy a Carbon Monoxide Alarm and Fit It In The Correct Position Carbon Monoxide is the by-product from incomplete combustion. You can’t smell it, see it or taste it but it can kill you in minutes… hence why it’s called The Silent Killer. Spending around £20-30 on a Carbon Monoxide alarm can mean the difference between life and death. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions to ensure it’s installed in the correct position (not behind the TV or on a sideboard, which is usually where I see them!)
#4 – Prepare Your Fuel If you use wood, make sure it is seasoned (meaning a moisture content of less than 20%). If it is higher than this, don’t use it. Burning wet wood is not only a false economy as you get very little heat from it, but it can cause tar and creosote to form in your flue, which can cause a chimney fire. If you use coal or solid fuel, buy it now and keep it dry. The longer into the burning season you leave it, it could end up being bagged up when damp and that has a knock-on effect to you.
#5 – Get A Stove Thermometer These are inexpensive devices which attach to the stove pipe. When used in conjunction with the stove manufacturers’ instructions, they are very handy at ensuring that you are burning your fuel at the optimum temperature. Not only is this better for the environment, but it makes sense financially as you won’t be wasting money by burning inefficiently and causing potential damage to your flue in the process.
Hope you've found this useful! Jamie

Another shocker today! I did a sweep this afternoon for a customer wanting his m/f stove cleaned/inspected ready for the burning season ahead. Customer has never used the appliance since moving in. Sellers advised him all working well and had been recently swept. THE STOVE AND FLUE WERE BLOCKED. 3HRS of cleaning and I removed more than a large rhino tub of baked tar and soot and REMAINS OF A FLEXIBLE LINER - all resulting form 'slumbering' coal and lack of/infrequent sweepin...g maintenance! Flue is now clean, clear of debris and confirmed by camera inspection. I can't stress enough how important it is to get the appliance (open fire, stove) checked over and flue swept if you're moving in to a new property. Oh, and fit a Carbon Monoxide detector. LUCKY THE CUSTOMER CALLED ME!
