Be very careful of this organisation. I cannot comment on the flying school which may be completely different. We used this company to handle us as we were on a detail flying out of Blackpool for a week. All was arranged beforehand by the Chief Pilot. Westair have handled this aircraft for the last fifteen years and for a number of years been the maintenance organisation for the aircraft. As a commercial pilot for a UK airline I use numerous handling agents per day. A handling agent for a fee arranges everything required by the crew, for example, refuelling the aircraft, taxi’s, accommodation etc. On this detail, the crew basically handle themselves making the job for the agent very easy. They get paid for doing not very much. On day five, on arrival back from the mission where I was the Captain I met by a tirade of abuse from an Andrew Heeley, before I had even got out of the aircraft. He was claiming we had no right to use Westair for handling and putting fuel on their account. I pointed out to him I was a contract pilot and he needed to speak with the Chief Pilot who arranges everything. He didn’t listen and continued with the verbal abuse. I called the Chief Pilot as I didn’t know who the person was. I later found out that Andrew Heeley was just a Parts and Technical member of staff. He obviously has very little understanding of aviation as most people in aviation understand hurling a tirade of verbal abuse at the Captain of an aircraft, who is on task, adds stress to the Captain which is a known cause of increased incidents and accidents. He also didn’t realise we had an off-duty CAA enforcement inspector on-board the aircraft who was less impressed with his attitude and the way he handled the situation.
I have used Westair for probably around eight years and recommended them to airlines and people. I was very saddened to see how quiet both their maintenance and flying school was, having seen it bustling in the past. The attitude and the way Andrew Heeley treats people I can now see why they are so quiet and obviously struggling. I would highly advise John, the owner, have serious words with this guy and address his attitude and anger.
After explaining to Andrew Heeley at Westair they were getting money for nothing by handling us, he said he didn’t care so we immediately moved our operation to next door “High G” who looked after very well in a very professional manner to which I am accustomed too.
I look forward to an explanation of why I was treated this appallingly before I decide what if any further action is needed.
