Westwood Dam Description

This water is run by Chapeltown and district AA and at just over 3½ acres has just short of 40 pegs to fish from. There are 5 pegs along the Dam wall and there are one or two pegs that can be easily accessed but the remainder of the pegs are not suitable for disabled anglers. This is due to some fairly steep steps that have to be negotiated.

The water is fairly sheltered and is well fished throughout the year. The water does hold matches so check prior to travelling to avoid being disappointed. There is car parking that is visible from the majority of the pegs.

The water is deep in most parts with some places being over 14ft, the shallowest parts offer around ¾ftin the bay at the top end of the water.

There are good shoals of Bream and Roach in the water, the best Bream a little over 5lb with the average being nearer 2lb. Both these species will feed quite confidently up in the water taking casters or maggots at anywhere between 4ft and 6ft deep. Long pole will work and for ease the fish can be drawn in with loose feed to ease the strain on the arms. Waggler fishing can be just as effective but a slow sink will provide the best rewards - wind and tow allowing. As the weather drops colder a cage and ground bait feeder can be as effective.

There are Chub that run up to 6lb and these can be taken on similar methods. The other main species present are Carp which run to over 20lb but there are also a good head of doubles present. The water is obviously rich as there are plenty of Silver fish of about 1lb present. The Carp will fall to specimen tactics with Boilies, Meat or Corn. There are Tench present and a stocking programme over the past few years has paid dividends, the best at about 5lb but most averaging around 1lb. The Tench are absolute suckers for red worms apparently. There is a decent head of Barbel now running up to 3lb which fall to Luncheon meat.

Richard Wood currently holds the match record with 68lb

This is great place to go for some old school type lake fishing that makes a change from commercials. Caught some nice roach and bream that are in mint condition. There are some decent carp and crucians. It's the kind of place that you don't know what you are going to catch next but requires some brains to have a good catch using watercraft and knowing your swim.
